Chapter 33
Alice POV
We were actually having a pretty damn good time watching the horror movie. The guy on the screen was chasing some poor girl through the woods with a chainsaw, and she was screaming her head off as she ran. “Run faster!” I yelled at the television. “And for God's sake, get in the car!” I shook my head as she ran right past a perfectly good-looking car..“Why didn't you get in the damn car?” I muttered. “Okay, fine. It probably won't start because that's how these stupid movies always work.”
Ice chuckled beside me. “You really hate horror movies, don't you?”
“I don't hate them,” I said, looking at him. “I just think the people in them are idiots.”
He laughed, and I couldn't help smiling. Things had been going really well between us tonight. A little too well, actually. We had kissed. More than once. And every time his lips touched mine, it felt like my entire body forgot how to function. There was something about Ice that made me nervous and excited at the same time.
I was starting to really like him. Maybe more than I should. I turned my attention back toward the television, but then I heard it. A howl.
It wasn't part of the movie.
Another howl followed. Ice immediately stiffened. The change in him was so sudden that I noticed it right away. He sat up straight, his entire body tense, his eyes focused on something I couldn't see.
“What is it?”
He stood up from the couch. “I have to go.”
I stared at him. “Excuse me?”
“I have to take care of something.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
I couldn't hide my disappointment. Seriously? We had just been kissing, and now he suddenly had somewhere to be? “What's going on?”
He looked toward the door. “Something is happening with my pack.”
I blinked. “Your... pack?”
“Yes. My pack.”
I frowned. “What do you mean, your pack?”
“I'll explain everything when I have time. I promise.”
He walked toward the door. Then he stopped and looked back at me. “Alice, please stay here.”
“Why?”
“Because I need you to stay here. Don't leave this room, okay?”
Before I could ask another question, he opened the door. “I'll be back shortly.”
Then he left. The door closed behind him. I sat there staring at it.
“Your pack?” What the hell did that mean? I wasn't stupid. I had heard him and the others talk before. They acted differently than normal people. They were stronger than they should have been. They were always talking about territory and borders. And now he had a pack? I stood up and walked toward the window. I wasn't scared for myself. I was scared for him.
What if those wolves hurt him? What if something happened to him out there? I knew I should probably listen to him and stay put.
But sitting there while he walked into the woods wasn't happening.
“Damn it, Ice.” I went to my bed and pulled out my gun from underneath it. I checked the magazine. Loaded. I grabbed a few extra bullets and shoved them into my pocket. If something happened to Ice, I wanted to be able to protect myself.
I pulled on my boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. I wasn't about to let mosquitoes eat me alive. “Okay, Alice,” I whispered. “Let's go.”,I hurried out of the room and ran downstairs. By the time I got outside, Ice and the others were already gone. “Damn, they're fast.” I looked around and noticed footprints leading toward the woods. Following them seemed like a terrible idea.,Which, of course, meant I was going to do it. I followed the tracks deeper into the trees. The farther I went, the quieter everything became. Then I heard growling.,I stopped.,My heart started pounding.
I slowly moved forward and pushed some branches aside. And that's when I saw them. Wolves. A whole damn pack of them.
There had to be more than twenty. They were surrounding Ice and his friends. But something was seriously wrong with them. Their eyes were bright red. They were snarling, drooling, and foam was coming from their mouths.,“Oh shit.” Rabies. That's the first thing that came to my mind. “Those wolves have rabies.”If Ice got bitten, he could get sick. He could die. I didn't stop to think about what I was doing.
I pulled out my gun. “Get away from him!” I aimed and fired. BANG!
One wolf dropped. BANG! BANG! BANG! I kept firing. The wolves scattered, but some of them charged toward me. “Stay back!”
I emptied the magazine. My hands shook as I quickly reloaded.
Then I started firing again. One after another, the wolves fell. Finally, there was only one left. And then…. I was out of bullets. “Oh, you've got to be kidding me.” The wolf charged. I turned and ran.I didn't get very far.,It slammed into me, knocking me hard onto the muddy ground. I rolled over, scrambling backward. The wolf slowly stalked toward me.
Its eyes were glowing red. Drool hung from its mouth. I could smell something awful coming from it. My heart was pounding so hard I could barely breathe. This was it. I was going to die. I closed my eyes. I waited for the pain. But it never came. I slowly opened my eyes. A huge white wolf was standing over me. It had tackled the other wolf and was snapping viciously at its neck. The white wolf was enormous. And terrifying. The other wolves that surrounded them looked just as dangerous. I scrambled to my feet. I grabbed my gun, even though it was empty, and ran. I wasn't staying in those woods. No damn way. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me.
I didn't stop until I reached the building. I raced up the stairs and threw open the door. I slammed it shut behind me. My entire body was shaking. I backed toward the couch before my legs finally gave out. I slid down onto the floor, pulled my knees against my chest, and tried to catch my breath. “What the hell just happened?”
I couldn't answer my own question. Then… BOOM! My door flew open. I screamed and scrambled backward. “Ice!”
He rushed toward me. He grabbed me and pulled me into his arms.
For a second, I was relieved. Then he started yelling. “What the hell did you think you were doing, Alice?!” I flinched. “You could have gotten yourself killed!”
“I…”
“Why did you go out there when I specifically told you to stay here?!”
I stared at him.,“Tell me why!”.His chest was rising and falling rapidly.,“Why did you disobey my order?!”
Something inside me snapped. I pushed away from him. “Excuse me?” He stared at me. “I'm not a f*****g dog, Ice!”
“Alice..”
“You don't get to order me around!”
“I was trying to protect you!”
“Then tell me the truth!”
He went silent. I pointed toward the door.“There is something you're hiding from me.” His expression changed. “And I'm going to find out what it is.” I stepped closer. “And when I do, I'll be done.” The second those words left my mouth, I saw the hurt in his eyes. Damn it. I knew I'd hurt him. But I needed answers. “What are you hiding?”
He didn't answer. “Are you running guns?” Nothing. “Drugs?”
Still nothing. “Are you involved in some kind of s*x trafficking or something?”
His eyes widened. “What?”
“I don't know, Ice! What am I supposed to think when you disappear into the woods with a bunch of men and start talking about packs and territory?”
He rubbed his face. I took a breath. “All I want is the truth.” I lowered my voice. “What do you mean when you say 'your pack'?”
He stared at me for several seconds. Then he slowly walked toward me. He reached for my hands. I let him take them. “Alice... there are things you don't understand.”
“Then explain them.”
“Some of those things might sound completely insane to you.”
“Try me.”
He sighed. “You might not ever want to know the truth.”
“I need to know.”
He looked into my eyes. “I don't think you're ready.”
I frowned. “Or maybe I'm not ready to tell you yet.” He stepped closer. “But when I do tell you everything, I hope you'll stay.”.He pulled me against him and kissed my forehead.“Try to get some rest.”
I wanted to argue. But I was exhausted. “I know tonight was crazy,” he whispered. “But please... trust me.” He kissed me softly. “If you can do anything for me, just trust me.” He stepped away.“In time, you'll understand everything.”
Then he walked out and quietly closed the door behind him.I stared at the door. There was something about Ice. Something big.And I was going to find out what it was.
Ice POV
What the hell was that woman thinking? I paced inside my room, running my hands through my hair. She could have been killed.
She had no idea what those wolves were. Those weren't ordinary wolves. They were rogues. And they had been trying to cross onto my territory. I hadn't even smelled Alice. That was what scared me the most. How the hell had she gotten so close without me sensing her? Then the gunshots started. BANG! BANG! BANG!
I turned toward the sound. Bullets were flying through the woods.
“Who the f**k is shooting?” I heard Skull's voice through the mind link. “Mate.” I froze. “Mate is helping us kill the rogues.” My stomach dropped. Alice.
“No.” She had followed me. She had actually followed me into the woods. “She's human!” I shifted immediately. I ran toward the gunfire. Rogue after rogue was dropping. Whoever was shooting was killing them. Then suddenly.. Silence. I looked around. Several rogues had already fled. Only one remained. Then I smelled her.
Alice.,I followed her scent.,I saw the rogue charging toward her.
“Alice!” The bastard knocked her to the ground. She rolled through the mud. Then she closed her eyes. The rogue jumped.
I shifted mid-run, my wolf taking control. My white wolf slammed into the rogue before he could reach her. I grabbed him by the neck and tore him away from my mate. I killed him. There was no hesitation.
Nobody was going to touch my mate. Nobody. I turned toward Alice.
She was already running. “Damn it!” She was terrified.I couldn't blame her. After the last rogue was dealt with, I shifted back and quickly grabbed some clothes. Then I ran straight back to the house. I stormed upstairs and kicked Alice's door open. CRACK!
The door nearly came off its hinges. I looked at it. “Great.” I was going to have to fix that tomorrow.
But I didn't care about the damn door right now. I cared about Alice.
She was alive. That was all that mattered. We argued. She yelled at me. I yelled at her. But when she told me she'd leave once she found out the truth, it felt like someone had punched me straight in the chest. I couldn't lose her. Not now. Not ever. But I couldn't tell her yet. Not until I knew she was ready. I walked back into my room and dropped onto the edge of the bed. Skull's voice came through the mind link. “You should tell her.”
I sighed. “I know.”
“You can't keep it a secret forever.”
“I know, Skull.”
I rubbed my face. “She almost found out tonight.”
“Exactly.”
“I just need to figure out when and how to tell her.”
Skull was quiet for a moment. Then he spoke again. “Tell her soon.”
I looked toward the door. “If you don't, she's going to be even angrier when she finds out.”
I sighed. “Having a human mate is a hell of a lot harder than I thought.”
Skull chuckled. “You think?”
I leaned back, staring at the ceiling. How was I supposed to explain to the woman I loved that werewolves were real? How was I supposed to tell her that I was an Alpha? That the men around her weren't just bikers? That the wolves she'd seen tonight weren't sick?
They were rogues. And the huge white wolf that had saved her… Was me. I closed my eyes. “Goddess, help me.”
Skull spoke again. “You need to tell her before she finds out on her own.”
I knew he was right. But knowing the truth and actually telling Alice were two very different things. I had spent my entire life protecting my pack from humans. Now I had a human mate. And she was already walking straight into the world I had been trying to keep hidden from her. I stared at the closed door. “Should I tell her?”
There was no answer. Only silence. And somehow, that silence made the decision even harder. Because deep down, I already knew the truth. Alice was going to find out. The only question was whether she would hear it from me… Or discover it herself. I kept the reveal of what Ice and the wolves really are hidden for now, so you still have room to build the tension before Alice learns the truth.
