Chapter 26

Randy POV

I woke up the next morning convinced yesterday had been a nightmare. Then I opened my eyes. I stared at the ceiling for several seconds. "Please let that have been a dream."

“It wasn't.”

I groaned. "Koda, you really need to learn when to keep your mouth shut."

“Good morning to you too.”

I sat up in bed and rubbed my face. Everything that had happened came rushing back. Tona. The bite. The mark. Butch. Werewolves.

My wolf. Koda.mI looked down at myself. "Still human-looking."

“We're not human.”

"Can you stop reminding me?"

“No.”

I threw the pillow at the wall. "Great."

I got out of bed and walked toward the bathroom. The moment I opened the door, I stopped. Something smelled amazing. I sniffed the air. "What is that?"

“Food.”

"I know it's food."

“Eggs.”

I followed the smell down the hallway and into the kitchen. Tona was standing at the stove. She turned around. "Good morning."

"Morning."

She looked at me carefully. "How did you sleep?"

"Not very well."

She smiled. "Your first night with your wolf is usually rough."

"Usually?"

She nodded. "Most newly changed wolves have trouble sleeping. Your senses are heightened, your wolf is awake, and you're trying to understand thoughts that aren't completely your own yet."

I grabbed a chair and sat down. "I have a question."

"Ask."

"Why am I so damn hungry?"

She laughed. "Because your metabolism has changed."

"I feel like I could eat this entire kitchen."

"That's normal."

She put a plate in front of me. I looked at the food. Then I looked at her. "Is this all for me?"

"For now."

I started eating.,After the first bite, I practically moaned. "Oh my God."

Tona laughed. "It's just eggs."

"No. These are the best eggs I've ever tasted."

"Your senses are stronger." "Everything tastes better."

"Yes."

I quickly finished the plate. Then I looked at the empty plate. "Do you have more?"

Tona shook her head, laughing. "You're going to eat me out of house and home."

"Sorry." I looked down. "Actually..."

"What?"

"There's something else."

"What?"

I could hear a heartbeat. Not Tona's. Someone else's. I stood so quickly the chair nearly fell backward. "Someone's outside."

Tona immediately became serious. "What?"

"I can hear them."

She closed her eyes. For a moment, neither of us moved. Then I heard it again. Footsteps. Slow. Coming toward the house. Tona's wolf immediately became alert. "Stay here." She started toward the door.

"No."

She stopped.

"I can help."

"You're a newborn."

"I'm still stronger than I was yesterday."

"Randy..."

"I can hear them before you can."

She stared at me. She knew I was right. "Fine. But you stay behind me."

We moved toward the front door. My heart started pounding. Koda growled inside my head. “Danger.”

I swallowed. "Yeah, I know."

Tona looked at me. "Don't let Koda take over."

"I'm trying."

The footsteps stopped. Silence. Then three knocks hit the door.

Knock..Knock.,Knock. Tona's expression changed. She looked terrified. I had never seen that look on her face before. "Who is it?"

No answer. Tona slowly moved toward the door. I grabbed her arm.

"Don't."

She looked at me. "Why?"

"I don't know." I listened. Nothing. Then I heard breathing. Slow.

Heavy. Someone was standing directly outside. And then a voice came through the door.

"Tona."

Her face went pale.

I whispered, "Who is that?"

She didn't answer. The voice came again. "I know he's in there."

Koda growled so loudly inside my head that I nearly doubled over.

“Butch.”

My blood ran cold. I looked at Tona. "That's him?" She nodded.

Butch laughed from the other side of the door. "You can't hide him from me forever, Tona."

I felt something change inside my chest. My anger exploded. I stepped toward the door. Tona grabbed my arm. "No."

"He wants me."

"That's exactly why you stay away from that door."

Butch laughed again. "I can smell you, little wolf."

I froze. Little wolf? He could smell me through the door. Koda snarled. “Let me out.”

"No."

“He threatens our mate.”

"I said no."

Tona looked at me. "What are you doing?"

"I'm trying to keep him under control."

Her eyes widened. "You can hear him that clearly already?"

"Yes."

Koda growled again. “He will not take her.”

I clenched my fists. "I know."

Butch knocked once more. "You have until tonight."

Tona's face changed. "Until tonight for what?"

His voice became cold. "Bring me the boy." Silence. "Or your parents die."

My stomach dropped. I looked at Tona. Her eyes filled with fear.

Butch continued. "You have until midnight." Then the footsteps disappeared. Tona stood frozen. I could feel her pain through the bond. I hadn't even known the connection was strong enough yet.

But I could feel it. Fear. Anger. Desperation. I reached for her hand.

"We're not giving him to Butch."

She looked at me. "Randy, you don't understand."

"Then explain it."

"He'll kill you."

"Maybe."

I squeezed her hand. "But I'm not letting him kill your parents either."

She stared at me. "You don't even know them."

"No."

I looked toward the door. "But they're innocent."

Koda growled inside my head. “We protect our mate's family.”

I sighed. "Apparently, Koda agrees."

Tona's eyes softened. "You're going to get yourself killed."

"Maybe."

I gave her a small smile. "But I'm getting tired of everyone telling me what I can't do."

She laughed weakly. Then suddenly, my body jerked. A sharp pain shot through my chest. I grabbed the kitchen counter. "Randy!"

I couldn't breathe. My vision blurred. Koda's voice filled my head.

“Shift.”

I looked at Tona in panic. "What the hell is happening to me?"

She rushed toward me. Then she stopped. Her eyes widened.

"Oh God."

"What?"

She looked at the clock. "Your wolf is trying to come out."

My heart pounded. "But you said the full moon."

"I know." She grabbed my shoulders. "But your wolf can still try to surface before then."

Another wave of pain ripped through me. I dropped to my knees.

My bones cracked. I screamed.

Tona grabbed my face. "Randy, listen to me!"

I couldn't answer. Koda roared inside my head. “Trust me.”

I squeezed my eyes shut. "What do I do?"

Tona's voice was urgent. "Don't fight him!"

"What?"

"Let him come forward!"

I shook my head. "I'm not becoming a damn wolf!"

She looked directly into my eyes. "Randy..." Her voice softened.

"You don't have to be afraid of him."

Another crack echoed through the room. I screamed again. Then Koda whispered one final thing. Let me show you who we really are.

And everything went black.
