Chapter 28 Randy POV I sat in the Alpha chair staring at all the people standing in front of me. Nobody said anything. They were just watching me. Waiting. I swallowed hard. What the hell was I supposed to say? I'd never been an Alpha before. Hell, I hadn't even known werewolves were real until recently. Now I had an entire pack standing in front of me, waiting for me to lead them. I looked at Tona. She was standing beside me, watching everything carefully. "Uh..." I cleared my throat. "Everyone can... stand up." The warriors looked at one another before slowly getting back to their feet. I leaned toward Tona. "What do I do now?" She tried not to smile. "You lead." "Yeah, I figured that part out." I lowered my voice. "But how?" Tona shook her head. "You're going to have to learn." "Great." I rubbed my face. "Because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing." A few of the warriors looked like they were trying not to laugh, I pointed at them. "Don't laugh. I'm serious." One of them quickly straightened. "Sorry, Alpha." Alpha. Hearing that word still felt strange. I looked around the room again. "First, I want to know everyone's names." The warrior who had spoken earlier stepped forward. "My name is Marcus. I'm the head warrior of the Black Forest Pack." I nodded. "Marcus." Then I pointed toward the others. "And you?" One by one, they introduced themselves. There were warriors, scouts, guards, healers and pack members who had been waiting outside. I tried to remember every name, but there were too many. Eventually, Tona leaned toward me. "You don't have to memorize everyone today." "Thank God." She smiled. I looked back at Marcus. "Tell me something." "Yes, Alpha?" "How many people are in this pack?" Marcus hesitated. "About two hundred and fifty wolves." My eyes widened. "Two hundred and fifty?" He nodded. "Yes." I leaned back in the chair. "Geesh." Tona whispered, "Watch your language." I looked at her. "Seriously? That's what you're worried about?" She laughed quietly. "For an Alpha, you have a lot to learn." "No kidding." I looked around again. "Okay. What happened to everyone after Butch took over?" Marcus's expression changed. "They suffered." His voice became quiet. "Butch took everything from this pack. Money. Land. Food. He forced warriors to follow his orders." Another warrior stepped forward. "He punished anyone who questioned him." Marcus nodded. "Some wolves were forced out. Others disappeared." My hands tightened around the arms of the chair. "How many?" Nobody answered immediately. Marcus finally looked at me. "Too many." I looked at Butch's body lying on the floor. For the first time, I understood that his death wasn't just about revenge. This pack had been trapped under him. And now they were looking at me to fix it. "Okay." I stood. Everyone immediately straightened. "I'm not Butch." Nobody moved. "I don't know everything yet. I'm going to be honest about that." I looked at each of them. "But I'm going to learn." I glanced at Tona. "And I'm going to have people around me who know this life better than I do." I looked back at the warriors. "I won't rule this pack through fear." Silence. "I won't hurt you for disagreeing with me." Marcus's eyes widened slightly. "And I won't take what belongs to you." I took a breath. "But I expect loyalty." Every warrior nodded. "If someone threatens this pack, we stand together." My voice grew stronger. "If someone threatens my family, we stand together." Tona smiled. "And if someone threatens one of you..." I looked around the room. "...they answer to me." Marcus dropped to one knee. "We swear our loyalty to you, Alpha." The others followed. Soon the entire room was kneeling again. I stared at them. This time, I didn't feel quite as terrified. Maybe... Maybe I could actually do this. Tona POV I watched Randy carefully. He was nervous. Confused. Overwhelmed. But there was something else there. Leadership. He didn't even realize it yet. He wasn't trying to intimidate anyone. He wasn't demanding respect. He was earning it. That was something Butch had never understood. An Alpha wasn't supposed to rule because everyone feared him. An Alpha ruled because his people trusted him to protect them. I walked over to Randy. "You did well." He looked at me. "Really?" I nodded. "For your first speech." He sighed. "Good, because I thought I sounded like an idiot." I laughed. "You did a little." "Thanks." "But you were honest." I placed my hand on his shoulder. "That's important." He looked around the room. "So what's next?" I smiled. "Your training." His face fell. "Training?" "Yes." "I thought Koda said I was strong enough." "You are." "Then why do I need training?" "Because being strong isn't the same as knowing how to be an Alpha." He groaned. "What exactly am I supposed to learn?" "Everything." He stared at me. "Everything?" "Pack laws. Warrior ranks. Territory. Hunting. Defending the borders. Punishments. Council meetings. Mating laws. Alpha commands. Mindlinking." I paused. "And how to control your wolf. Well lycan.” Randy became quiet. "About that..." I knew what he was going to say. "Koda." He nodded. "He's still in there." "Yes." "How do I control him?" "You don't." He looked confused. "You learn to work with him." Randy looked down. "What if he takes over again?" "He won't unless you allow it." "But he took over without asking me." "Because you were overwhelmed." I looked into his eyes. "Koda protected you." Randy nodded slowly. "I know." Then his expression changed. "Wait." He looked around. "Where will you be in all of this?" I froze. Randy's eyes narrowed. "You're my mate?" I took a slow breath. "I'm safe." I hesitated, Randy's jaw tightened. "What does that mean?" "He can't hurt me or my family anymore" Randy's eyes darkened. "He wanted you hurt?" I nodded. "And now he's dead." Randy looked toward the body. "Good." He turned back toward me. "But I need to know where you are." "You will." "How." "Randy.." "I need to have you with me." His voice wasn't loud. But there was power behind it. The room suddenly became very quiet. I could feel his wolf stirring. Then a voice came through the mindlink. “Randy.” His entire body froze. His eyes widened. He looked up at me "Franky ?" Randy, are you okay? He smiled. For the first time since Butch's death, I saw relief on his face. "I'm okay." There was a pause. “Where are you?” you said you would be back a week ago.” Randy looked at me. I nodded. He answered. "I'm at the Black Forest Pack." Silence. Then Franky spoke again. “Why are you there?” Randy looked at Butch's body. "I'm the Alpha." The mindlink went completely silent. Then…”What?” Randy laughed. "Yeah." He shook his head. "I don't understand it either." “Wait, How are you mindlinking me?” “Its a whole lot of story, I'll explain later, But i'll be up there in a few weeks and we will talk,” I smiled. He was going to need a lot of help. Because being Alpha wasn't just about sitting in a chair. It was about protecting everyone who had just placed their lives in his hands. And Randy had no idea how much his new position was about to change everything. Because somewhere beyond our borders… Someone was already watching. And they had felt Koda's return. The Lycan had awakened. And now everyone who knew the legend would know one thing. Koda was back. And the Black Forest Pack had a new Alpha.
