Chapter 23
Randy POV
Darkness. That was all I could see. I tried to open my eyes, but they wouldn't move. I tried to lift my arms, but my body felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. “What the hell is happening to me?”
I couldn't hear my own voice. Or maybe I wasn't actually speaking.
Something was wrong. My entire body felt like it was on fire. One second I was freezing, the next I was burning so badly that I wanted to rip my own skin off. Then came the pain. It started in my chest.
A sharp pressure that spread through my body. My heart pounded so hard I thought it was going to explode. I tried to scream. Nothing came out. Suddenly, memories started flashing through my mind.
Alice. Her face. Her voice. Her leaving me. The highway. The hotel.
The date. Tona. Her house. The dinner. The movie. The kiss.
Then… Her teeth. My eyes snapped open. I shot upright, gasping for air.
“What the f**k?” I looked around. I wasn't in the hotel. I wasn't even sure where I was. I looked down at my hands. They were shaking.
My breathing was heavy. Something inside me felt different. Wrong.
No… Not wrong. Different. I slowly climbed out of the bed. My legs nearly gave out underneath me. “What did she do to me?”
I stumbled toward the bathroom and grabbed the sink. I looked into the mirror. My eyes were different. For a second, I thought the light was playing tricks on me. Then I saw them. My canines. They were longer. Sharper. I touched one with my finger. “No.” I backed away from the mirror. “No, no, no.” My heart started racing again. Then something growled inside my head. “Calm down.”
I froze. “What the hell?”?”You're finally awake.” I stared at the mirror.
“Who said that?”
“I did.”
I grabbed the sides of my head. “What the f**k is going on?”
A deep growl answered me from somewhere inside. “We are finally awake.”
I stumbled backward. My breathing became faster. Then the memories came rushing back. Tona. Her eyes. The way she looked at me. The bite. The blood. Her telling me that when I woke up, I'd be one of them. My stomach dropped. “Oh God.”
I turned toward the bedroom. The door slowly opened. Tona stood there. She looked terrified. “Randy.”
I stared at her. “What did you do to me?” She didn't answer.
“Tona!” She flinched. “What did you do to me?”
She slowly walked into the room. “I didn't want this to happen this way.”
“Answer me!”
“I turned you.”
I stared at her. “Turned me into what?”
She swallowed. “One of us.”
I laughed. It wasn't because anything was funny. It was because I couldn't believe what I was hearing. “You're f*****g crazy.”
“No.” She shook her head. “I'm not.”
“Then explain this!” I opened my mouth and showed her my teeth. “What the hell are these?”
“Your cannies.”
I stared at her. “Cannies?”
She nodded. “You're a werewolf now.”
The room went completely silent. I stared at her. Then I laughed again. “A werewolf?”
“Yes.”
“You expect me to believe I'm a f*****g werewolf?”
“I know it sounds insane.”
“Insane?” I pointed at myself. “I was just a normal man a few days ago!”
“I know.”
“I had a life!”
“I know.”
“I had…” I stopped. Alice. My anger suddenly shifted. “Where is Alice?”
Tona's expression changed. “Who?”
“Alice.” I stepped toward her. “The woman I was looking for.”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I'm not.”
I could hear her heartbeat. Boom. Boom. Boom. My eyes widened.
I could actually hear it. I looked around the room. I could hear things I'd never heard before. The ticking of a clock. A car driving somewhere outside. Someone walking down the hallway. Every sound was suddenly amplified. I grabbed my head.
“What is happening?”
Tona stepped closer. “Your senses are changing.”
“I can hear your heartbeat.”
She nodded. “That's normal.”
“Normal?” I looked at her like she'd lost her mind. “Nothing about this is normal!”
She reached for my hand. I pulled away. “Don't touch me.”
Pain crossed her face. I didn't care. At least, I told myself I didn't.
Because deep down, I could feel something pulling me toward her.
Something I didn't understand. Something that felt almost like a bond. Tona looked down. “Your body is still adjusting.”
“How long was I out?”
“Three days.”
“Three days?”
She nodded. “Your transformation took longer than I expected.”
I looked at myself in the mirror again. Three days. I had been unconscious for three days. And now I was something I never believed existed. I turned back toward her. “Why?”
She looked at me.
“Because you're my mate.”
I froze. “Your what?”
“My mate.”
I shook my head.“No.”
“Yes.”
“You're saying I'm your mate?”
“Yes.”
“And that's why you did this?”
Her eyes filled with tears. “No.”
I stared at her. “I did it because I was forced to.”
“By who?”
She hesitated. I could hear her heart beating faster. “By who, Tona?”
She looked away. “Someone who has my family.”
My anger faded slightly. “What?”
“Butch.”
The name came out barely above a whisper. “That mother fucker,”
“He's dangerous.”
“So are you.”
She looked at me. “I know.”
I studied her face. For the first time, I could see the fear she had been hiding. She wasn't pretending. She was scared.
“Tell me everything.”
She shook her head. “I can't.”
“You owe me the truth.”
“I know.”
“You changed my entire f*****g life!”
“I know!” She finally yelled back.mTears rolled down her cheeks.
“I know, Randy!” She covered her face. “I didn't want to do this to you. I wanted to tell you the truth. I wanted you to choose me.”
I stared at her. “But you didn't give me a choice.”
She lowered her hands. “No.”
The silence between us felt heavy. Then something inside me growled again. “She is ours.”
I clenched my fists. “Shut up.”
Tona looked confused. “What?”
“Nothing.”
I looked toward the window. Somewhere outside, a car passed.
I could hear every movement. Every heartbeat. Every breath.
And then I smelled something. Fresh blood. My eyes changed instantly. I turned toward the door.
Tona's eyes widened. could feel something waking inside me. Something hungry. Something powerful. Something I had never known existed. I slowly smiled. “What the hell am I?”
Tona stared at me. “A werewolf .”
I looked at my reflection one more time. Then I whispered, “Then I guess we're about to find out what I can do.”
