Chapter 24 Tona POV I couldn't do this. Randy didn't understand what was happening to him, and I couldn't blame him. His entire world had been turned upside down in a matter of hours. But if I let him walk out that door, he could get himself killed. He was a newborn werewolf. He was strong, much stronger than any human, but he was nowhere near strong enough to face the rogues that lived beyond our territory. They would sense immediately that he was new. And they would kill him. I rushed over, grabbed him by the arm, and pulled him back before he could reach the door. "Randy, you can't just go out there. You're a newborn werewolf. There are things out there that you don't understand yet. Please, just come back into the living room and sit down. I'll explain everything to you." He stared at me, then looked toward the door again. I could feel his wolf becoming agitated. If Randy panicked too much, his wolf could take over completely. If that happened, there was a chance he could go feral, and then it would be too late. Thankfully, after several tense seconds, he finally nodded. We walked back into the living room. Randy dropped into the chair farthest away from me. I understood why. He didn't trust me. And honestly, I couldn't blame him. Look at what I'd done to him. I sighed and sat across from him. "Randy, please. Just listen to me, okay? After I'm finished, you can ask me anything you want. I'll answer every question I can. But first, just listen." He didn't say anything. My wolf whimpered inside me. She wanted to reach out to his wolf, but something was holding her back. I mentally told her to keep trying. Randy finally leaned back in his chair. "All right. Go ahead. Start talking. Tell me more lies, but make them good. I just might believe you." I shook my head. "I haven't lied to you. I just... kept the truth from you." He stared at me. I took a deep breath. "Okay. Here it goes." I folded my hands in my lap. "Randy, my pack and I have been werewolves since long before humans even existed. We've been around for centuries. Some of us have lived for thousands of years." His eyebrows shot up. "We have rules. A lot of them. But the most important rule is that we never tell humans about our existence unless they're our mate. Even then, we have to ease them into it. We can't just dump everything on them at once. We tell them little by little and give them a choice." "A choice?" "Yes. If they accept us after learning the truth, and they choose to be marked, then we mark them." He stared at me for several seconds. "Okay, but you marked me without telling me. I even became one of you. How did you do that?" I hadn't even finished explaining, but he'd asked a question, and I promised I would be honest. "We don't usually change humans. What happened to you wasn't supposed to happen." His expression hardened. "I was forced to change you." "Forced?" I nodded. "Butch has my family. He has my mother and father. If I didn't mark you and change you, he would've killed them." Randy's anger flickered for just a moment. "My parents are old," I continued. "Werewolves can live for a very long time. Sometimes more than two thousand years. Sometimes even longer." I took another breath. "But when I marked you, I allowed some of my blood to enter your system. It traveled through your veins, and your werewolf blood began taking over your human blood." Randy looked down at his hands. "That's why you're stronger now. Your heart beats faster. Your senses are sharper. You can hear things humans can't hear. You can see things they can't see." I smiled slightly. "And right now, you're probably smelling my scent." He looked confused. "What?" "What do you smell?" He hesitated before taking a deep sniff of the air. His nose wrinkled. "Hmm." I had to fight back a laugh. "What?" "I smell rosemary... and strawberries." He sniffed again. "It's so mouthwatering that it's making me hungry. Is that you?" I nodded. "Yes. That's me." He stared at me. "Your scent to me is blackberries and oak. That's how I knew you were my mate." His expression changed. "Mate?" "Yes. And not only that. My wolf was driving me crazy from the moment you walked into that bank. She wanted me to mark you right there." "Seriously?" "Seriously. But I couldn't. We were in public, and there were humans everywhere. We have to be careful at all times." Randy shook his head slowly. "This is insane." "I know." I leaned forward. "Now answer me something. Are you hearing a voice in your head?" He nodded. "Yes. It's driving me crazy. It won't shut up." He rubbed his temples. "It keeps saying, 'You sure talk a lot. He already knows all of this. He doesn't need to be told.'" I blinked. "That's your wolf." "That's what it is?" "Yes." I smiled. "He should have a name, Randy. And you need to start bonding with him. Because of the next full moon..." I paused. "...you're going to shift." His eyes widened. "You're shitting me, right?" "No." "Shift into a wolf?" "Yes." "What the f**k does shift even mean? This isn't like those horror movies, Tona. I'm not going to grow fur all over my body, have my teeth and fingernails grow, and then start killing people, am I?" I burst out laughing. Then I quickly stopped when I saw the look on his face. "No. It's nothing like the horror movies." "Good." "You will grow fur." His face fell. "But your body will change. Your bones will shift. Your arms and legs will twist into their new form. Your body will reshape, your head will change, and you'll eventually be on all fours." I smiled. "You'll become a wolf, Randy." He stared at me. Then he suddenly burst into laughter. He laughed so hard that he started choking. I jumped up and patted him on the back. "Are you okay?" He finally caught his breath. "You're f*****g with me now." "I'm not." He shook his head. "Okay, so what am I supposed to do with this voice in my head?" "Talk to him." "What?" "Ask him his name. Communicate with him through your thoughts. That's what he's doing with you right now. The reason you can hear him is because you're already connected." Randy stared into space. I could practically see him trying to process everything. A few seconds later, his expression changed. "He told me his name." I sat up straighter. "What is it?" "Koda." I smiled. "Koda?" "Yeah." Randy looked completely overwhelmed. "He says he wants to speak with his mate." "I don't know how in the world he's supposed to do that. This is all just crazy. It's too much. I feel like I'm having some kind of bad dream." He started getting out of his chair. I quickly stood. "Randy, stop." He froze. "Your wolf can talk to mine. They're doing it right now. They're communicating through their thoughts." He stared at me like I'd completely lost my mind. "You're telling me my wolf is talking to your wolf?" "Yes." "Jesus Christ." "You'll be okay. But you need to train. You need to get stronger." He swallowed. "Why?" "Because you're a newborn. You need to learn how to control your wolf and your strength." I hesitated. "And once you've marked me, we'll be complete." His eyebrows shot up. "Wait. What the hell are you talking about? Marking you?" "Yes." "You mean bite you?" I nodded. "Where in the f*****g hell am I supposed to do that? Am I supposed to snarl and bite your leg or something?" I laughed softly. "No." I moved my hair aside, exposing the tender spot just above my collarbone. "You're supposed to bite me right here." I hadn't expected him to actually move. But Randy stood. He walked toward me and knelt in front of my chair. My breath caught. He gently moved my hair aside and leaned closer. Then he inhaled my scent. I could feel my wolf practically going crazy inside me. She knew exactly what was happening. Randy's breathing changed. His eyes darkened. And then, before either of us could stop it, his wolf took control. He leaned forward and sank his canines into the marking spot. I winced at the sharp pain, but I stayed still. The mate bond surged between us. For one brief moment, everything around me seemed to disappear. Then Randy suddenly jerked away. His eyes were wide with panic. "I... I... I'm so sorry!" He stumbled backward. "I don't know what came over me. Are you okay? Are you bleeding?" I touched the spot and shook my head. "Yeah, I'm okay." I gave him a small smile. "Your wolf took control. He marked me." Randy's eyes became even wider. "But it's okay." He didn't answer. Instead, he turned around and practically ran toward the bedroom. A second later, I heard the lock click. I stared at the closed door. I didn't feel like chasing after him. I sighed and rubbed my forehead. And they say women are dramatic. Men are so much worse. "Geez..."
