IChapter 15
Alice POV
Last night at work had been absolutely crazy. There were so many bikers coming into the club, drinking like there was no tomorrow. Before long, a few of them started fighting. And some of them actually started growling. What the hell was with all the growling?
I had no idea what was going on, but whatever it was, they were definitely taking some kind of territory thing way too seriously.
At one point, I had to grab a bucket of ice-cold water and dump it over a couple of guys just to get them to calm down. It worked.
At least for a few minutes.
Then one of them started getting in my face, and after telling him several times to back off, I finally punched him right in the head.
The shocked look on his face had me laughing. I guess nobody had ever hit him before. He quickly decided I wasn't worth the trouble and walked away. The rest of the night went pretty much the same way. Drink. Fight. Drink some more. Then fight again.
At one point, I was laughing so hard when two of the guys slipped on the wet floor and went crashing into each other. I was definitely starting to wonder what the hell kind of place I had gotten myself into. Eventually, Mack came walking out from behind the bar with a huge smile on his face.
“I’m impressed,” he said. “You're doing an amazing job. I have to admit, I was shocked to see you punch one of them, but that's okay. You can handle yourself.” He glanced at the clock. “It’s two-thirty in the morning. Time to close. How about you head back to the hotel? I’ve got everything here.”
I nodded, already exhausted. Then he reached into the register area and pulled out a thick wad of cash. “Oh, and these are your tips. We don't share tips here. Anything you make is yours.”
He handed me the money. I looked down at it but didn't bother counting it. I was way too tired. “Thank you.”
“You earned it.”
I shoved the cash into my purse and hurried out. By the time I got back to the hotel, I could barely keep my eyes open. I took a quick shower, crawled into bed, and crashed. Hard. I don't even remember falling asleep. Then, sometime around five-thirty in the morning, I woke up. Howl. I opened my eyes and listened. Another howl followed.
They weren't close, but they weren't exactly far away either. I lay there staring at the ceiling. Were the wolves hurt? Maybe that was why they were howling. A strange feeling settled in my chest. Part of me wanted to get dressed, go outside, and find them. I wanted to see if they were hurt. I wanted to help. But I was exhausted. There was no way I was walking around in the woods at five-thirty in the morning after working until two-thirty. I closed my eyes again.
Before I knew it, it was ten in the morning.
I groaned and forced myself out of bed.I needed to get moving.
I had to get my things into the car and head back to the room I was renting. I couldn't wait until I had my own place. It was above a garage full of bikers, which probably sounded insane to most people. But honestly? I didn't care. At least I knew nobody would be sneaking up on me. I took another shower, got dressed, and started packing everything I had taken out of my bags. I checked twice to make sure my gun was safely packed, then grabbed the rest of my belongings.
Once everything was ready, I returned the hotel key to the front desk and headed outside. I climbed into my car and started the engine. Now I was heading back to Ice's garage. Hopefully, he was awake. I needed to get the key to my new place. And, if I was being honest with myself, I was looking forward to seeing him again. I just couldn't explain why.
Ice POV
I had been awake since seven that morning. I had barely gotten a few hours of sleep after everyone had shifted and spent half the night howling. After our pack run, everyone had finally gone to bed, but apparently, my wolf hadn't gotten the memo that he was supposed to sleep. I had been up bright and early, making sure everything was ready for Alice. My wolf wouldn't stop pacing inside my head.
“Mate will be here soon.”
“I know.”
“Mate will be safe.”
“I know, Skull. Calm down.”
“Want mate.”
I sighed. “She doesn't need to see you yet. Not like this. Let her warm up to us first.”
My wolf growled softly. “If you don't stop, I'm going to block you so you can't see her.”
He whimpered and disappeared toward the back of my mind. I couldn't help but smile. I knew he was excited. Hell, so was I.
But there was a problem. Alice was human. I was a werewolf.
I had no idea how she was going to react once she discovered the truth. All I could do was hope she would be happy here and wouldn't decide she wanted to leave. Several of the guys were already awake, and they were just as excited as I was. They knew Alice was our Luna, even though she didn't know it yet.
Suddenly, I heard the sound of a car coming up the driveway. My heart kicked hard against my chest. I looked toward the window.
It was Alice. My wolf immediately started going crazy.
“Mate!”
“Calm down.” I didn't want to rush outside. I needed to give her space. I waited until she got out of the car before heading outside.
When I stepped out, I saw Josh helping her with her bags. I walked over and grabbed the other one. She had been telling the truth.
She really only had two bags of clothes. Damn. She didn't have much at all.
“Welcome back,” I said with a smile. “And welcome to your new home. Most of the guys are still sleeping, but they'll be waking up soon to eat breakfast and head to work.”
“No problem,” she said. “I'll try not to wake them up. I have a few hours to relax myself. I have to work tonight, and then tomorrow I'm off since the club is closed on Sundays. I'm going to sleep in tomorrow.”
I laughed. “Yeah, we'll see how well that works out.”
She looked at me. “What?”
“You'll understand once you hear all the motorcycles starting up.”
She laughed. “Great.”
I smiled and held up the key. “Come on. I have a key for you, so you can come and go as you please.”
We walked toward her new place with Josh following behind us, carrying the other bag. He was smiling from ear to ear. I wasn't sure why he looked so damn happy, but I had a pretty good idea.
He was excited to meet our Luna, too. When we reached the door, Josh handed me the bag.
“I have to get to work. See you later tonight.”
He took off toward the garage. That left Alice and me standing there alone. She unlocked the door and stepped inside. I followed her into the living room, but I didn't close the door behind me. I wanted to stay. More than anything, I wanted to stay. But I didn't want her to feel trapped or think I was hovering over her. So I kept my distance.
“Listen,” I said. “We stocked the kitchen with food and drinks. I also bought a couple of different shampoos and conditioners. I wasn't sure what you liked, but I wanted you to be comfortable.” I gestured toward the door. “I'll let you get settled. If you need anything at all, I'll be in the garage.”
She looked at me. “Hey, Ice.”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you. Really. Thank you.”
Something inside my chest tightened. “You're welcome.”
She smiled softly. “I'm going to get some rest before work tonight.”
I nodded. “Get your rest. We'll talk soon.”
I walked back toward the door, but before I stepped outside, I glanced back at her. She was standing there looking around her new home. For the first time in a long time, I felt something I hadn't allowed myself to feel in years. Hope. Alice was finally here. And now I just had to make sure she never had a reason to leave.
