someone is watching 16

Chapter 16 Alice POV I stood in the middle of my new living room after Ice left, listening to his footsteps disappear down the stairs. For some reason, I couldn't stop smiling. This place wasn't fancy, but it was mine. Well, technically, I was renting it, but it still felt like a fresh start. I walked around slowly, looking at everything. The kitchen was stocked just like Ice had promised. There was food in the refrigerator, drinks in the cabinets, and even a few snacks sitting on the counter. I opened one of the cabinets and laughed when I saw the different shampoos and conditioners. “He really wasn't kidding.” I grabbed my bags and started putting my clothes away. I didn't have much, but it felt good to finally unpack without wondering how long I'd be staying. No Randy. No one yelled. No one told me where I could go or who I could talk to. Just peace. I walked over to the window and looked down toward the garage. There were several motorcycles parked outside. I could hear voices coming from below. Then I heard a motorcycle roar to life. “Okay... maybe sleeping in tomorrow isn't going to happen.” I laughed to myself. Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door. I froze. For a second, my stomach dropped. Nobody should know where I was. I slowly walked toward the door and looked through the peephole. A young man was standing outside holding a plate of food. I opened the door slightly. “Can I help you?” He smiled. “I'm Josh. We met earlier.” “Oh, right.” He held up the plate. “I figured you might be hungry.” I looked at the food. “That smells really good.” “It is. Trust me.” I opened the door wider and took the plate. “Thank you.” “No problem. Ice said you might be tired, so nobody wants to bother you.” I smiled. “That’s actually really nice.” Josh started walking away, then stopped. “Oh, and Alice?” “Yeah?” “If you need anything, just yell downstairs. Someone will hear you.” I laughed. “I'm beginning to think privacy doesn't exist around here.” He grinned. “Not really.” Then he disappeared down the stairs. I closed the door and carried the food to the small kitchen table. I took one bite and nearly moaned. “Oh my God.” Whatever they had cooked was incredible. I sat there eating while looking around my new home. For the first time since leaving Randy, I felt safe. Really safe. And that scared me a little. Because I knew better than to trust things too quickly. I'd learned that lesson the hard way. After I finished eating, I decided to lie down for a little while. I had work later tonight, and I needed the sleep. I climbed into bed and pulled the blanket over myself. My eyes were already getting heavy. Then I heard something outside. A low growl. I sat straight up. There it was again. A deep, rumbling growl. I walked over to the window and looked outside. Nothing. Just motorcycles. Just the garage. Just the quiet street. I shook my head. “I'm getting tired. That's all.” I climbed back into bed. But I couldn't shake the feeling that someone, or something, was watching over me. Ice POV I stood inside the garage pretending to work. I wasn't fooling anyone. Every few seconds, I looked toward the stairs leading to Alice's apartment. My wolf was pacing again. “Mate.” “I know.” “Go see mate.” “No.” “Why?” “Because she needs space.” My wolf growled. “She just got here. If I go upstairs every five minutes, she's going to think I'm crazy.” “We are crazy.” I sighed. “That's not helping.” One of the guys nearby started laughing. “What?” He shook his head. “Nothing, Alpha.” I narrowed my eyes. “You better be careful.” He grinned. “We all know you're standing here staring at the stairs waiting for Alice to come back down.” Several of the guys started laughing. I rolled my eyes. “Get back to work.” They laughed even harder. Then I heard it. A faint sound coming from upstairs. A heartbeat. Her heartbeat. My wolf immediately stopped pacing. “Mate.” I closed my eyes for a second. I could feel the pull between us getting stronger. I had spent so long wondering what my mate would be like. Now she was here. And she had no idea. I opened my eyes and looked toward the stairs. I wanted to go up there. I wanted to knock on her door. I wanted to tell her everything. But I couldn't. Not yet. She had already been through enough. She needed time. Suddenly, one of my warriors came rushing into the garage. “Alpha.” I turned toward him. “What is it?” His expression had changed. “There's someone outside the territory.” My wolf immediately snarled. “Who?” “We don't know.” I stepped forward. “Where?” “North side. One of the patrols spotted someone watching the property.” My stomach tightened. “Did they get close?” “No. They disappeared before we could reach them.” My wolf was no longer calm. “Protect mate.” I clenched my jaw. “Double the patrols.” The warrior nodded. “And don't let anyone near the house.” My eyes went toward the stairs. Alice had just arrived. Someone was already watching us. And I had a feeling this wasn't a coincidence. “Find out who they are.” “Yes, Alpha.” He took off. I stood there staring toward the stairs. My wolf growled inside my head. “Mate is in danger.” I didn't answer him. Because deep down, I was beginning to think he was right.
