Chapter 10 Alpha Ice POV I barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes, my wolf was right there in my head, pacing and whining like a damn puppy. “She’s close.” “I know.” “She’s here.” “I know.” “Go find her.” I sat up in bed and rubbed my face. “Can you shut the hell up for five minutes?” My wolf growled. No. I rolled my eyes. Of all the times for him to become impatient, this had to be it. I looked at the clock. Four-thirty in the morning. She had to be exhausted. If the car my men had followed was really hers, she had been driving for hours, possibly longer. I wondered what she'd been running from. Who had she been running from? And why had my wolf been so certain she was our mate before I'd even seen her? I had spent months searching for the woman my wolf insisted was out there somewhere. I had followed every lead, checked every town, and questioned anyone who might have known something. Nothing. Then suddenly, she appeared. And now she was in my town. My town. Only a few miles away. I got out of bed and pulled on a pair of jeans and a shirt. My wolf immediately became excited. “We're going.” “Not yet.” “Now.” “I said not yet.” “Mate.” I sighed.,“I'm not walking into some random hotel at four in the morning and scaring the hell out of her.” My wolf went quiet for a moment. Then… “She might leave.” That stopped me. He was right. I had no idea how long she planned on staying in Gatlinburg. If she was running from someone, she might leave again before sunrise. “Cine.” The link opened almost immediately. Yes, Alpha? “I need someone watching the hotel.” There was a pause. “Which hotel?” “The one near the highway. I want two men there. Keep your distance. Don't approach her. Don't scare her.” Understood. “And Cine?” Yes? “If anyone else shows up, I want to know before they get within a mile of her.” “You got it.” I ended the link and grabbed my jacket. My wolf was practically dancing inside my head. “We protect her.” “Yes.” “We don't let anyone take her.” “No.” I stopped at the door. Something about this felt bigger than just finding my mate. My wolf had never acted like this before. He wasn't simply excited. He was scared. That bothered me. Because if my wolf was afraid… what the hell was waiting for us? Alice POV I woke up slowly. For a few seconds, I didn't remember where I was. Then I saw the unfamiliar ceiling. The strange room. The bag is sitting beside the dresser. And suddenly everything came rushing back.,Randy. The race.,The chase. he highway. The woods. Gatlinburg. I sat up quickly. My hand immediately reached toward the nightstand. My fingers wrapped around my gun before I even realized what I was doing. I looked around the room. Nothing. .No one. I slowly released the breath I'd been holding. “Get a grip, Alice.” I placed the gun back on the nightstand. Then I looked at the clock. Nine in the morning. I couldn't believe I'd slept that long. I climbed out of bed and stretched. My entire body was sore, but at least I felt rested. I walked over to the window and carefully pulled the curtain back just enough to look outside. Cars were coming and going. People were walking around. Everything looked normal. That was exactly what I needed. Normal. I let the curtain fall and walked over to my bag. I didn't have much money left. I couldn't stay in this hotel forever. I needed a job. And I needed an apartment. I pulled on a pair of jeans and a shirt, then grabbed my purse. Before leaving, I checked the room again. Gun. Phone. Wallet. Keys. Everything was there. I slipped the gun into my purse and headed toward the door. I stopped with my hand on the handle. Something felt strange. I couldn't explain it. It was almost like someone was watching me. I slowly opened the door and looked down the hallway. Nothing. It's just an empty hallway. I shook my head. “I'm just paranoid.” I locked the door behind me and headed downstairs. The same man from the night before was behind the counter. When he saw me, he smiled. “Good morning, ma'am.” “Good morning.” “Sleep well?” I smiled. “Better than I have in a long time.” He chuckled. “Well, that's what we're here for.” I walked toward the front doors. “Do you happen to know anywhere around here hiring?” He thought for a moment. “Actually, there are quite a few places hiring. There's a diner a few blocks from here. They usually need help.” “That sounds perfect.” “There's also a small office near the tourist district. They might be hiring, too.” I smiled. “Thank you. I appreciate that.” “No problem.” I stepped outside. The morning air hit me immediately. I breathed deeply. Fresh air. Mountains. No, Randy. I smiled. Maybe this really could be my new beginning. I started walking toward town. I had no idea where I was going. I didn't know anyone. I didn't have a job. I didn't have a home. But for the first time in a long time, I had something I hadn't had in years. Alpha Ice POV “She left.” I turned toward Cine. “What?” “She just walked out of the hotel.” My wolf practically exploded inside my head. Go! I was already moving. “Where is she?” “Walking toward town.” I grabbed my keys. “Keep your distance.” I headed outside and jumped into my truck. My hands tightened around the steering wheel. She was here. My mate was here. After all this time, I was finally going to see her. I just hoped I could keep my wolf under control long enough to actually introduce myself. Because if he had his way… I'd probably be running down the street screaming MATE at the top of my lungs. I shook my head. “Don't embarrass me.” My wolf growled. “You embarrass us.” “Shut up.” I pulled onto the road. A few minutes later, I spotted her. She was walking down the sidewalk with a small purse hanging from her shoulder. I slowed the truck. My heart stopped. There she was. The woman I'd been searching for. My wolf went completely silent. Then, one word echoed through my mind. “Mate.” I stared at her. And for the first time in my life…I didn't know what the hell to do.
