Chapter 6 Alice POV The road seemed endless. I had been driving for hours, watching the scenery change outside my window. The farther I got from everything I knew, the lighter I felt. For the first time in what felt like forever, I could breathe. No Randy. No racing club. No women hanging all over him. No one told me what I could or couldn't do. Just me, my car, and the open road. I glanced at the GPS sitting on my dashboard. Still a long way to go. "Come on, Alice," I muttered. "You can do this." My stomach growled. I laughed softly. "Okay, maybe we need food before we starve." I pulled into the next gas station I saw. I filled the tank again, grabbed a sandwich, some chips, and a bottle of water. I paid with cash, just like I had been doing since I left. I didn't want anyone knowing where I was going. After getting back into my car, I sat there for a moment, eating my sandwich while staring at the road ahead. I couldn't help thinking about Randy. I wondered if he was angry. Of course he was. He probably thought I would come crawling back like I always had. But I wasn't going back. Not this time. I was done forgiving him. Done making excuses for him. I was done pretending that what we had was love. I had loved Randy. God, I had loved him. But somewhere along the way, love had turned into fear, and fear had turned into something I couldn't recognize anymore. I wiped a tear from my cheek. "No more crying." I started the car again. "Gatlinburg, here I come." I pulled back onto the highway. I had no idea what waited for me there. I had no idea that somewhere in Tennessee, someone was already waiting for me. And I definitely had no idea that the man I was running toward would change my entire life. Alpha Ice POV Three days. That's all the time Skull had given.Three days before my mate entered our territory. I had spent most of the night trying to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do. A human mate. I still couldn't wrap my head around it. I had lived for more than three hundred years. I'd seen wars, watched packs rise and fall, and fought creatures most humans didn't even know existed. But a human mate? That was new. I walked through the clubhouse early the next morning. Everyone was already awake. My pack was made up of bikers, fighters, and people who had been rejected by other packs for one reason or another. We weren't exactly what most people would call normal. But we were family.,And my family was going to have to accept my mate. Human or not. I walked into the main room. "Everyone, listen up." The conversations stopped. "We have three days." Gale rolled her eyes from the corner. I ignored her. "My mate is coming into our territory." A few of the men smiled. Finally, after centuries, their Alpha was getting his mate. But then I continued. "She's human."The room went silent again. One of the younger wolves looked confused. "Human?" I nodded. "Yes." Another wolf scratched his head. "Does she know about us?" "No." That caused several people to exchange looks. "Then we have a problem," someone said. "I know." I crossed my arms. "She's running from something. Skull can sense her fear, but he doesn't know exactly what she's running from." That immediately changed the mood. This wasn't just about finding my mate anymore. She was in trouble. And if she was coming toward us without knowing what we were, she could be walking directly into another danger. "We need people watching the roads," I ordered. "But nobody approaches her." Everyone nodded. "When we find her, I will handle it." One of my men raised his hand. "Alpha, what if she rejects you?" I stared at him. "I don't know." It was the truth. I'd spent centuries imagining what my mate would be like. I'd imagined a wolf. Someone who understood the supernatural world. Someone who wouldn't be terrified of me. I had never imagined a human woman. But Spike didn't care about my doubts. “She is ours.” I sighed. "I know." “Protect her.” "I know." “She is scared.” That made me stop. "How do you know that?" Spike growled softly. “I can feel her fear.” I stood completely still. Somewhere out there, my mate was terrified. She was alone.MRunning from something. And she didn't even know that I existed. For the first time, the thought of having a human mate didn't bother me. It scared me. Because if Spike could feel her fear from this far away, whatever she was running from had to be serious. "Find her," I told my pack. Everyone immediately moved. I turned toward the window. Three days. Maybe less. My mate was coming. And whoever had made her run was going to have to answer to me. Alice POV The sun was beginning to set when I realized I couldn't keep driving. My eyes were burning. My back hurt. And I was exhausted. I pulled into a rest area and parked beneath a large tree. I locked the doors before leaning my head back against the seat. I had promised myself I wasn't going to stay at hotels anymore. I didn't trust anyone. I didn't know who Randy might know. I didn't know how far he would go to find me. So my car would have to be my home until I reached Gatlinburg. I closed my eyes. Just for a few minutes. That's all I needed. But before I knew it, I was asleep. I didn't know how long I had been sleeping when something woke me. I sat up quickly. My heart was pounding. I looked around the parking lot. Nothing. Just a few cars and the sound of wind moving through the trees. I reached for the door lock to make sure it was still locked. It was. "Get a grip, Alice." I rubbed my face. It had only been a dream. At least, I thought it had. Because for some strange reason, I could have sworn I had heard a voice. A deep voice. A man's voice. “Keep going.” I froze. "What?" I looked around again. Nothing. I shook my head. "I'm losing my mind." I started the car and pulled back onto the highway. But I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching over me. And somewhere miles away, a white wolf with golden eyes lifted his head. “She's getting closer.” Ice's eyes narrowed."How close?" Skull answer, sent a chill through him. “One day.” Ice looked toward the mountains. One day. His mate would be entering his territory. And neither of them knew what was waiting for them when they finally met.
