I rubbed his hair and giggled.
“Silly boy, what are you talking about? Don't you dare refuse your treatment? Have you forgotten our promise? You can't die before me, you must grow up healthily, get married to a cute girl, and live happily ever after. I was the one who suggested going to Calvin, okay? I just cried because I didn't expect him to give him such a condition. I was just surprised. Don't panic, okay?” I whispered, rubbing his back.
“You're lying. You want to sacrifice everything just because of that money. I'm not dumb. You will never be happy with Calvin, and you know it. Don't marry him, please,” he whispered, holding my hands.
“People no longer marry for love these days. Love only happens in movies and romance novels, not in real life. I don't love anyone. I have never even had a boyfriend. So, instead of living a lonely life and dying of old age, I might as well marry Calvin and enjoy all that money he's packing. He's even handsome and well-built. He looks young, like a thirty-year-old man. His gray hair is the problem, but I will make him dye it. Calvin is a good catch,” I whispered with a bright smile, trying to look like a materialistic gold digger.
“You're lying, look me in the eye and tell me that you will be happy if you marry Calvin,” Rey insisted stubbornly, not buying my act.
My heart skipped a beat at his words.
How can I look him in the eye and tell such a blatant lie?
I took a deep breath and looked up at him with a smile.
“Of course, I will be happy with him. Calvin is a multi-billionaire, the dream of many women. I got quite the catch. Why would I be unhappy? Even if I quit school, I can always get a load of money from him. I will take you with me on luxury vacations, cruising on his yacht. I can even afford your treatment. I will live in a castle-like Cinderella. I'm happy, of course. Furthermore, I only cried because I was shocked. But I have had a chance to think it over and realized that I don't even have a boyfriend. I'm probably not that pretty. So why not grab this opportunity since a billionaire is interested in me?” I lied through my teeth, smiling at him.
He frowned and narrowed his eyes, trying to dissect if I was being honest.
But I took care to keep a straight face to avoid giving myself away.
“You're gorgeous. You're tall with an hourglass figure, you have beautiful emerald eyes and long black hair reaching down to your waist. How can you not be beautiful? Just wait a bit, I'm sure you will find a good man,” he insisted.
“Silly boy, what if the new one doesn't have money? I will regret it if I don't manage to marry a billionaire after letting go of Calvin. Regret is not an option. So I had better grab it with my two hands, before he finds someone better. Besides, we need the money, right? Calvin might even die soon and leave me his massive wealth. I will finally get the chance to manage a huge company. Just relax and get your treatment, OK? If I realize that I don't like Calvin anymore, I will divorce him and get some money from him,” I whispered with a massive grin.
Rey kept staring at me wide-eyed with shock, probably wondering when his sister had turned into a materialistic gold digger.
The expression of disbelief and confusion on his face immediately made me realize that I had finally managed to pull the wool over his eyes.
I smiled in satisfaction, confounding him the more.
****
I sat nervously in the side room as the stylists touched up my makeup.
My hair was packed in Kate Winslet's style from the Titanic cover.
My mind immediately wandered to the tragic movie, wondering if my life would also end so tragically.
I rebuked the thoughts and extended my hands for the stylists to attach the diamond and platinum bracelets fitted with emeralds.
I was wearing an emerald tiara, making me look like a princess.
The stylists led me gingerly to the floor-length mirror.
I sighed helplessly, admiring myself was useless since I was not feeling any of the excitement. I only felt incredibly afraid.
The dark green floor-length gown highlighted my figure.
It was sleeveless, exposing a bit of my sizable boobs.
The diamond pendant lay in between my breasts, drawing more attention to it.
I looked every bit like a beautiful princess, just like every partner is expected to look like.
I sighed and shut my eyes, at least my brother was safe with the miracle doctor.
Calvin transferred the money earlier this evening, and we took my brother to the miracle doctor's hospital, which is currently the most security-conscious hospital in the country.
After his treatment commenced, we left him with his nurse and returned to prepare for the occasion. Hopefully, Calvin won't find it easy to slip past the miracle doctor's guards. I don't trust him one bit.
“You look stunning,” Dad said with a smile, making me turn towards the door.
I rolled my eyes and walked to him, silently extending my hand towards him.
He led me to the grand hall where everyone was waiting.
Everywhere immediately fell silent as they all turned to stare at me.
Calvin's eyes roved all over my body in lustful appreciation, making me sick.
The proud smile on his face made me feel worse.
He was making it all the more obvious that I'm a partner.
Dad placed my palm in Calvin's, making me cringe.
He stepped away as Calvin placed a kiss on my cheeks.
I held back my disgust to avoid embarrassing myself before the guests.
Calvin was well-built and neat. The only indicator of his advanced age was his hair.
But I still hate him nonetheless.
I zoned out throughout the process, vaguely remembering Calvin wearing the ring on my fingers.
I turned to find myself a seat as Calvin left to socialize with his guests when I saw him.
Alvan Jones, Calvin's son. He once asked me out during our college days, but I rejected him because of his father's reputation.
Who would have expected that I would marry the devil himself?
He stared angrily at me, not hiding the fact that he was not pleased to see me.
I quickly looked away and sat down, trying to hold back the dizzy spells hitting me.
Alvan's a tall and handsome guy, he's very intelligent and successful, making him every girl's crush.
He was undergoing his master's degree when I was just a first-year student.
He asked me out after he came to teach our class, but I rejected him outrightly, even though I was attracted to him.
Furthermore, he has my hair and eyes, with a rock-hard body and cheeky smile that makes women swoon at his feet.
I held my tears at bay, feeling regretful.
Had I known, I would have accepted him. Calvin wouldn't want to marry his son's girlfriend because he's territorial.
Hell, I might have even gotten the money from Alvan if we were dating.
He's into real estate, he has made it big in the industry.
Not only that, he's also a successful lawyer.
I regret not accepting him back then, but it's already too late for regrets. My fate has been sealed.
