Chapter 1 — The Extraction Trap
~ Ivy POV ~ "If you touch that wire, the entire floor goes into lockdown," Ivy whispered, balancing the receiver against the interior casing of the wall panel. Her fingers held the bypass clip steady as she secured the tap to the main feed. The audio signal cleared, feeding a crisp stream straight to her encrypted recorder. "Signal is live," she muttered, double-checking the display. "Everything is set." She stepped back, smoothed down the lapels of her gray technician jacket, and adjusted the fake security badge pinned to her chest. The badge read Ivy Lang, Systems Specialist. It was a clean cover, untraceable and bought through three layers of shell contacts. Her client had paid a fortune to hear what the executives inside the Hale Global Logistics boardroom were planning, and she was minutes away from completing the job. She picked up her tool bag and moved down the wide corridor toward the service alcove. The executive floor was quiet, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass looking out over the city skyline. Inside the main boardroom, six high-ranking board members sat around a long conference table, their voices muffled behind acoustic doors. At the head of the table sat Ronan Hale. He owned every inch of space in the room. When a senior VP fumbled through a quarterly report, Ronan slowly snapped a fountain pen between two fingers, the sharp click cutting through the room. He didn't interrupt. He simply held his gaze on the executive until sweat broke out across the older man's forehead and the room fell silent. Ivy checked the audio feed in her earpiece. "The Asian shipping routes are secured," one of the board members said, his tone nervous. "If we finalize the transfer tonight, the SEC won't have time to flag the holding accounts." Ronan didn't look up from the document in front of him. "The transfer stays on schedule," he said, his voice quiet and calm. "We don't alter logistics for regulatory noise." "And the leak from last week?" another voice asked. "Handled," Ronan replied simply. "There won't be another leak." Ivy checked her watch. Five minutes until the meeting adjourned. She stepped into the alcove, pulled her tablet from her belt, and initiated the remote sequence to clear her access codes from the building's maintenance log. "Access logs cleared," she whispered, watching the progress bar reach one hundred percent. Then, the audio stream in her earpiece cut out entirely. Static hissed in her ear. The indicator light on her signal receiver turned from green to a solid, warning red. "What is that?" she muttered. Before she could run a diagnostic, a siren split the quiet floor. Red emergency lights flashed against the walls, casting harsh reflections across the carpet. A metallic thud echoed down the hall as the blast doors slid down over the main elevators, sealing the floor completely. "Lockdown sequence initiated," an automated voice announced over the speakers. "Level Forty is secured." Ivy grabbed her tool bag and ran toward the emergency stairwell at the end of the hall, pushing her hand against the release bar. The door remained locked, the digital keypad glowing bright red. "Completely locked down," she said, pulling her tablet back out. Her thumbs flew across the glass screen as she tried to override the local door control, but the system rejected every command. The security protocols were actively rewriting access credentials every five seconds. "Someone is manual-override locking the system," she realized. Footsteps echoed from the far corridor. A flash of light swept across the glass partitions near the lobby. "Check the west wing!" a guard shouted down the hall. Ivy ducked behind a structural pillar, pressing her back flat against the cold surface. She slipped the tablet back into her bag and looked around. The main corridor was open, offering nowhere to hide. The only unlocked room was the central boardroom itself, its glass doors resting slightly ajar after the executives had fled toward the shelter. She slipped through the gap in the boardroom doors, sliding into the shadow of a decorative pillar near the corner. The room was bathed in red light, the long table covered in abandoned files. She pulled out her primary drive, ready to wipe the micro-receiver signal manually before the guards swept the room. If they caught her with the hardware, she was looking at prison. "Come on," she whispered, tapping the manual override buttons on her hand controller. "You're using the wrong frequency band for the scrub," a calm voice said from the shadows behind her. Ivy froze. Slowly, she turned toward the head of the boardroom table. The overhead lights flicked on, blinding her for a split second. The red emergency glow vanished, replaced by the bright light of the boardroom fixtures. Ronan Hale was standing by the control console near the wall, his hand resting calmly against the lighting interface. He hadn't left with the other executives. "I asked my security chief how long it would take for the operative to attempt an extraction once the alarms triggered," Ronan said, taking a step toward her. "He estimated three minutes. You took two." Ivy tightened her grip on her tool bag, stepping back until her spine hit the pillar. "You set off the lockdown deliberately." "Of course I did," Ronan replied smoothly, halting a few feet away. His expression was unreadable. "You've been tapping my communications for three days, Miss Lang. Did you really think I wouldn't notice a secondary signal riding on our internal AV feed?" Ivy kept her voice steady despite the surge of adrenaline. "If you knew, you could have had me arrested at the front entrance. Why pull a full floor lockdown?" Ronan tilted his head slightly, studying her face, her outfit, and the tablet still resting in her hand. "Because arresting a hired technician gets me nothing. I don't care about the person who planted the bug. I care about who bought the information." "I don't reveal clients," Ivy said, narrowing her eyes. "Ever." Ronan took one more step forward, closing the distance between them. He reached out, his grip firm as he took the encrypted drive straight out of her hand before she could pull away. "You will," Ronan said quietly. "Because until you do, you aren't leaving this building."
