Chapter 17

I had not been in a battle since the time with the Rybaks, that was a long time ago. It was such a long time ago it almost seemed like a lifetime ago. Even so I did not doubt my ability. These creatures were much smaller than I, so I was ready. “I hate that you dragged me into this boy,” I said. “The thing can talk?” one of the soldiers said. “Who cares? Kill it!” the pack leader said. I had known long ago to never doubt any opponent when in battle. I should have had that in mind at the beginning of this battle with this pack. The pack had this strange armor on. It was not anything like those other creatures I had ran into earlier. However, whatever these creatures wore was hard as diamonds. My, was unable to make a dent on them. I looked at my claws when I failed to make a dent on the armor that these things were wearing. “The stupid creature thinks that it can tear us to shred,” the pack leader said. “Well if you do understand us, our armor is impenetrable to anything as trivial as your claws.” Suddenly I saw one of the armored soldiers shake violently as what looked like lightning surged through it. I knew I had seen something odd, I traced back to the source and saw Walker with this strange looking instrument in his hands. “What the hell was that?” The other soldier asked before I did. “Kid’s got an armor disruptor,” the pack leader said he motioned the soldiers towards Walker. Even if he had whatever a disruptor was, he would not be able to counter all these soldiers. “You really are going to owe me.” I said I looked over at Walker and cut off the attacking soldiers. If my claws didn’t work, I knew that my brute strength would. I grabbed one of the soldiers with one of my hands and threw him off into the forest around us. I grabbed a second soldier and did the same. The other soldiers turned away from Walker and aimed a similar weapon that Walker had towards me. I jumped narrowly missing getting zapped by whatever it was that these soldiers were shooting at me. It literally looked like a ball of lightning. I looked over at each soldier and noticed that this energy ball was emanating from these strange looking cuffs that were around their arms. I made a mental note to avoid that at all costs. It was then I decided to use our surroundings to our advantage. I quickly grabbed the boy and hid into the forest. “We must use our surroundings,” I said to Walker when he looked at me questioningly when we stopped behind some trees. “Such a silly creature,” the pack leader said. “Do you really think that you can hide from me, Colonel Steven Gray?” I watched from behind a boulder as the pack leader grabbed that strange looking ribbon that he had next to him. He suddenly raised it above his head and swung it with great furiousness. “Duck!” Walker said. He needn’t tell me I had crouched on instinct, as I had watched this “ribbon” cut down trees with ease. I looked over and watched with amazement as this ribbon cut through the boulder that I was standing behind and chopped it completely in half before it cut through several more trees. “What in the name of Brahma is that?” I asked. “We call it a s***h vine,” Walker said. “It has extremely sharp thorns on it, it is said to be able to cut through literally almost anything. Even the armor.” “The armor eh?” I said. “What are you thinking?” Walker said. “I think I am going to get that thing from the pack leader.” I said. The pack leader swung again, and I started crawling towards him. “You cannot hide from me forever,” the pack leader said. “Your nuts,” Walker said. “What does nuts have anything to do with anything?” I ignored his answer and continue my talking of this prey. This creature was not like anything I had stalked. For one it was a sentient creature, and it was a pack leader. For second it had that ribbon, this s***h Vine that Walker called it. It was an apt name for this thing. It was slashing everything around us to bits. I stopped when the creature stopped swinging. I waited. I creeped. I felt everything around me suddenly become deathly quiet. There were no noises, I could hear the creature’s heartbeat. He must have noticed it by now, the lack of noise. He looked around in a blind fear. He held the ribbon close to him. He shifted around, he looked, he scanned. He knew not where I was, and I was on him. I quickly grabbed the vine from him and pulled it away from him and lashed it at him. The creature put his arms out. The vine wrapped around the metal arms, but it was not being broken apart. It must be because of the metal. He looked like he was smiling for a moment, before I smiled back at him and spun the ribbon with all my force and sent the pack leader flying off into the distance. I held the strange ribbon in my hand and looked at it. I examined it closely. I realized it was a sort of plant. Under the ribbon effect that this thing was producing was a thick tree like bark. It felt just like any other piece of wood. I examined it and realized this ribbon part was this long leaf-like thing with razor sharp edges. There were gaps in the ribbon where one could safely grab onto the wood. “I can’t believe that worked.” Walker said running towards me. “Rule number one of a battle boy, always trust a senior hunter.” I said. I looked at the s***h vine and decide to keep it. “This is very cool, I never seen one up close.” Walker said looking at the vine. “So that’s how people grab it, it has a wooden center. “Yes, I noticed that,” I said. There was a noise that made my ears perk and I quickly grabbed the boy and ducked into the forest. I looked up and saw a strange looking flying object with a light at the tip of it. The light was scanning the area, like a giant eyeball in the sky it looked for us. But I hid. I hid under the guise of the forest. I watched the thing fly away and start scanning something else. “We have to get out of here,” Walker said. “We?” I said. “I’m coming with you.” Walker said.
