Lena Marlowe is on the last ordinary day of her life. Beneath the surface of her small-town routine, she feels an unsettling presence—an awareness she can’t explain. Her closest friend, Ryan Rowan, becomes the emotional anchor of the chapter, hinting at a slow‑burn romance built on trust, longing, and unspoken fear. As tension tightens around her, Lena’s world fractures in a single moment, pulling her into a psychological nightmare that will test her sanity, her strength, and her connection to Ryan.

The Last Normal Day
Chapter One — The Last Normal Day Lena Marlowe used to love the quiet. Piedmont’s early mornings always felt suspended in time, the kind of stillness that made her feel safe. Lately, though, silence pressed against her like a hand over her mouth. She stood at her bedroom window, sketchbook tucked under her arm, staring at the streetlight outside. It flickered once, twice, then steadied. She told herself it was nothing. A glitch. A dying bulb. But her pulse thudded in her throat. Her mother called from downstairs that she’d be late again. Lena didn’t bother replying. She slipped on her jacket, grabbed her backpack, and stepped outside into the cool September air. The walk to school felt wrong. Too quiet. Too empty. Every few steps she glanced behind her. No one was there. No footsteps. No cars. Just the feeling—sharp, cold, crawling up her spine. Halfway down the block, she heard her name. Ryan Hale jogged toward her, hair tousled, hoodie half‑zipped, looking like he’d rushed out the door the second he saw her leave. He slowed beside her, breathless but smiling. “You didn’t sleep,” he said. It wasn’t a question. She tried to shrug it off. “Just… weird dreams.” Ryan studied her face, his expression softening. “You’ve been on edge for days. Talk to me.” She wanted to. She wanted to tell him everything—the flickering light, the feeling of being watched, the way her skin prickled whenever she walked alone. But she didn’t want to sound paranoid. Not to him. “It’s nothing,” she said. “Stress.” He didn’t buy it. She could see it in the way he walked closer, matching her pace, keeping her in his peripheral vision like he was guarding her without making it obvious. Ryan had always been like that—quietly protective, quietly devoted, quietly hers in ways he never said aloud. They reached the school parking lot. Students clustered in loud groups, laughing, shoving, alive in ways Lena didn’t feel. She hesitated at the edge of the crowd. Ryan noticed instantly. “Lena,” he said softly. “If something’s wrong, you don’t have to pretend with me.” Her throat tightened. She nodded, unable to speak. He brushed his fingers against hers. Barely a touch. Barely a moment. But it sent warmth through her chest, grounding her, steadying her. She wished she could hold onto it. Then the feeling returned. A prickling at the back of her neck. A cold awareness. She turned. Across the street, a man stood beside a parked car. Dark clothes. Hands in his pockets. His face hidden beneath the brim of a cap. He wasn’t looking at the school. He was looking at her. Her breath caught. Ryan followed her gaze. “Do you know him?” She didn’t answer. She couldn’t. The man didn’t move. Didn’t blink. Didn’t look away. The bell rang, breaking the moment. Students surged toward the doors. When Lena looked back, the man was gone. The car was gone. The street was empty. Ryan touched her arm. “Lena. Seriously.” She forced a smile she didn’t feel. “I’m fine.” But she wasn’t fine. And she knew—deep down, in the place where instinct lived—that something was coming. Something she couldn’t stop. That night, the streetlight outside her window flickered again. This time, it stayed dark.
