The Transatlantic
Nkemdilim continued running like she was being chased by an unforeseen force, trembling and panting very heavily as she ran on the hilly roads with a bar foot and a torn outfit, she was looking so unkempt and hungry she ran out to the road and got hit down by a car. she was rushed to the hospital with blood soaked all over body. Nkemdilim woke up three days after to see her self in the hospital and everything looked strange to her. It was her first time seeing a place like that in her life. she was very surprised to see other black people like her receiving treatment from white doctors as she was still contemplating on what happened to her and where she is. Mr. Robin the man that hit her with a car brought some food for her to eat. everything looked strange to her. she is used to serving other people and being treated like an animal. Mr. Robin's eyes wandered all over Nkemdilim's body and she tried using the blanket to cover her body afraid that Mr. Robin will take advantage of her just like her Master. after a while Mr. Robin asked her how she sustained all those injuries on her body, but she found it difficult to understand the English language which made communication with Mr. Robin was very difficult though she was able to understand just a few words. After a few days Nkemdilim recovered very well and Mr. Robin took her to his house where she was only welcomed by Mr. Robin's wife thinks that she is their new maid. Mr. Robin's mother asked him. why he brought a black girl to their house, that she hates blacks but seeing the bruises on her body she felt pity for the girl and asked to show her, her room. a day later Mr. Robin began asking Nkemdilim's who she is and what brought her to America, she was not able to communicate in English So Mr. Robin asked her where she is from, she said Igbo Mr. Robin went out in search of an Igbo interpreter which he found after spending a few bucks . when the woman Adammm arrived and asked Nkemdilim some few questions. she broke down in tears remembering the betrayal from her father, and the things she has passed through. it was on an Afor market day, the people of Umuoforo were all busy preparing what they will take to market the following day being Nkwo one of the biggest market in their village. a large cry was heard from the people mostly the women, Nkemdilim and her mother ran out from their hut to know what is happening and they were told that their king is dead. it was a big shock to the people, a very devastating moment for them as Igwe Obilo was a very good man who has ruled the people of Umuoforo with so much love and care especially in the aspect of saying no to slave trade even though he is always persuaded by his Ichies and Onowu to agree to it. It happened that in the land of Umuoforo, their king Igwe Obilo was one of the few Kings who said no to slave trade. even when he was offered a g*n, shoes, clothes and cowries, due to that his Onowu Ichei Obika connived with the other Ichies to kill the king, they gave a poisonous substance to the King's Chef to be adding to his food each time she serves him his meal, though the chef refused at first but they kidn*pped her only son making her to agree to it. she started adding the substance to the King's food and his health started deteriorating and after two Eke market days the king died. because the king's son is still very tender, the Onowu ascended the throne and immediately started with seizing the land of the widows, and slave trading he wanted to be the richest king. He started slave trading, he first started with selling the slaves, they got from wars and then some elders started trading their stubborn children and some of the slaves they have in their hut.
