Chapter Two

And without thinking, I grabbed the hairbrush that was laying on top of the table nearby and threw it hard on the mirror on the wall and watched as it smashed to pieces then made my way to the bathroom which was down the corridor. We were living upstairs in my mum's bakery shop which have two bedrooms and a bath and a tiny kitchen that was too small to accommodate two people and the best way to say this ...is that we were poor and wretched. The only means of income was mum's bakery earnings while the man she calls husband wastes the little earnings by drinking and placing numerous bets! He doesn't contribute, all this is just from mum and the worst part is that mum doesn’t try to stop him, she was just helpless while he spends her money recklessly and hit her as well. Was this love or stupidity? It annoys me so well, seeing as she waste her life in a toxic marriage without being able to defend herself or the children, she birthed for this man. Some days, I just want to find myself wishing her more pain, maybe that might help her come to her senses and act up, but sometimes I just couldn't bear her pain and I remember the I found out that she was pregnant by this same man that treats her like trash and I couldn’t stop myself from hating her. But that doesn't stop me from showing up at the hospital when she was in labor. My head hurts head just remembering all this, I walked into the bathroom and unwrapped my towel then climbed into the tiny bath that was too small to accommodate me, I could only pull my leg close to my chest to be able to sit in the bath. I took my time to unwrap the bandage on my head before switching on the shower and allowing the water to drizzle over me, while I rest my head on the tub. It was freezing at first but after a while, it seems a bit relaxing and was able to soothe my headache that was when I shut my eyes for someone to rest my eyes, maybe I blacked out because I woke to mum's angry yell and instant knock. She was yelling about the water bill and how I was wasting it for being in there for too long. But of course, I couldn't blame her, non of this was her fault, and yet I ignored her and pretended that I was having a peaceful bath when I was finally out, I walked into my room to see her standing there with a huge frown on her face. I could sense how much she wanted to pace around the room, it was a habit she adopted over the years but my room was too tiny for that. “I have told you a dozen times never to waste water, you should get things done quickly then leave the bath! I stood for a moment and stare intensely at her, my head feels like it was going to drop off my neck and I couldn’t have her screaming at me like that, I ignored her and went about getting dressed. There wasn’t much to do rather than reach for one of my faded baggy shirts and then my favorite rugged pants, I have only two pairs and one short so I don’t have any other choice than to put it on and for my hair, there was nothing to be done about it. I still felt like my head was going to explode with mum still yelling in the background “You have to know how high the bill is Elmer, to don’t have to make me spend so much, since I’m the only one who is struggling to care for you and your sister, sometimes you have to pity me and not act stupidly” “Do you like yelling so much” I forced myself to say despite the headache, it feels as if someone was jabbing a heavy hammer on my head and the only thing I wanted now was for it to stop “You don’t have the right to talk to me that Elmer…ever” “Yeah, whatever” I said sarcastically and ignored her “You so ungrateful, you know that! I have to be obe be learned of your dad and now you…You’re enjoying this right? You want to see me suffer slowly and then die… you want that! I turned to glare at her, what was wrong with her “For goodness sake mum, my head is already aching so badly! I dragged my finger through my hair and tried to stay calm because I was going crazy already “Yeah, sure, you headache…sit down here, I’m going to get some new bandage and some medic oil, because of your carelessness, why would you do something stupid like that! “I saved your life, this shouldn’t be the way you should be speaking to me! “You want me to bow to you, huh? To worship you, right? For getting yourself hurt instead? “For goodness sake mum, I only did that for you, can’t you see it! My head was already killing me, I have to sit back on my bed with my eyes shut and my hand over my head. I heard walk up to me “Come on, raise your head, I need to rub this oil on you and wrapped this bandage around your head” I did as she said but then I heard my little sister at my door crying for my mum's attention. “Just hold on, Juni, I have to delay you your sister because of her reckless behavior,” she said to my three-year-old sister who was still crying for her attention at the door “You should have been asleep like everyone else instead you decided to act so stupidly by involving yourself in this! “Yeah, that does this” I stood up from the bed, grabbed the rest of the bandage on the bed and the aspirin on the bed, and made my way out, I couldn’t take it anymore, her yelling and unnecessary complaints, it was annoying and I just needed a little bit of peace.
