Christy walked into the lobby and stalked towards the receptionist.
"Good morning, what can I do for you?" The receptionist asked with a smile.
"I'm the new employee..."
"Oh! Wait a minute" The receptionist punched some keys on the keyboard. "You are..."
"Miss Christy George, Ma'am" Christy replied.
"Okay...Floor 5, office 0502" The receptionist instructed.
Christy quickly said her thanks and headed to the elevator. On getting to the office, there were two men and two women in the fairly large office. Their desks were far apart and they were visibly engrossed in their work. She cleared her throat and heads bobbed up from behind computers, looking questioningly at her.
"Are you the new employee?" One of the women asked. She had a beauty spot under her nose and was fair in complexion.
"Yes"
"Oh! Welcome to the Marketing department. I'm Betty" She said
"And she's ..." Betty gestured to a dark ebony black beauty that was now stretching out her palm for a handshake. "Kamara"
"I'm..." Chris was saying.
"Don't worry. We already know your name. By the way I'm David" One of the two guys cut in.
"You can call me Divine." The second guy said. "Nice meeting you, Miss Christy" He added smiling.
"Hey! Enough of formalities. How about you introduce yourself properly while sitting down over few cups of coffee" Betty suggested. She seems to be the carefree and boisterous type. "Is there any one that still has work to do?" Betty asked, this time scrutinizing her colleagues' faces.
"Nope" They chorused and made themselves comfortable around Christy.
"How did you guys get to know my name?" Christy asked.
"Oh! That?" Betty began. "Word suddenly went round that a beauty queen with the brains will the joining our company"
"And seeing you up close, you're truly a sight to behold" Kamara praised and Christy looked down blushing.
"Thanks Kamara" She muttered.
"Come on" Kamara said. Somehow, she was beginning to like this new girl.
"So, tell us all about yourself" Betty urged.
"It's so boring. My whole life has been a monotonous one" Christy answered and they giggled and prodded her on. "I was born and bred in this Lagos. Studied here too..." Christy paused, as if trying to figure out something.
"Is that all?" Kamara asked and Christy nodded.
"So, you attended University of Lagos?" Divine chipped in. He looks really smart and handsome.
"Yeah. Graduate of Business Administration" Christy replied, thinking it was over.
"With what grades?" Betty asked. God no! These guys are inquisitive devils. "What? Why aren't you answering?"Betty asked again.
"Maybe, she's shy" David offered.
"First class" Chris blurted out and slowly smiles flickered on their faces.
"Wow! We have a genius here" Kamara sighed. "And to think you almost got me worried that you weren't comfortable with us asking that question"
Christy smiled.
"Are you the last child of your parents?" David, who had been studying Christy intently, suddenly asked.
"No. I'm the first child" Christy answered.
"But..." David sighed. "I had the hunch that you were terribly pampered"
"Maybe, it's because I'm the only daughter of my parents" Christy added.
"Really?" Kamara and Betty asked simultaneously.
The rest introduced themselves to Christy and they all went back to their desks to continue with whatever work they had left.
"So, how does it feel being an only daughter?" Betty asked, breaking the silence.
"Strenuous... I know what my brothers are capable of" Christy said, rolling her eyes. The others smiled knowingly.
"Lest I forget, the Chairman's son will be joining us soon. I heard he just returned from abroad and the Chairman asked him to run this company" Kamara informed.
.
.
Two days later, Christy entered their office one early morning and saw a man moving around their desks, reading the documents on them and they had been clearly warned that their marketing strategies must be guarded with jealousy to avoid it leaking. The big question on her mind was How did he get here?
Without thinking, she grabbed the man by his shirt and let out an ear-piercing scream "Thief! Security, there's a thief over here"
Suddenly, sounds of hurrying steps echoed into the room and the door flew open.
"What are you doing? Call the security" Christy yelled at the other employees that stood rooted to the spot, mouth agape. The Manager rushed in and stopped in his tracks too. By then, The Thief had already pried her fingers from his shirt.
"Manager, he's stealing our documents" Christy continued, pointing at the documents in The Thief's right hand.
"Uh! Sir, when did you arrive?" The Manager asked The Thief with a smile "I'm deeply sorry about this. She doesn't know you because she's new here" The Manager continued explaining.
The Thief's brows creased and he stared at Christy as if she was an alien. Defiantly, Christy returned his gaze. Having been around boys all the time, she had learnt that men can be intimidating sometimes and she therefore learnt ways to counter it.
"Miss, he's our new CEO" The Manager uttered.
