5. He Whispered

“Don’t we need to go to the clerk’s office together? Why do you need my ID card?” The question finally escaped Iris’s lips. Archer’s request seemed a little unreasonable to her. “We don’t need to go together. In a few days, you will receive the marriage certificate. I just need your ID card,” said Archer. What the hell! What kind of marriage could be done that way? Iris was silent for a moment. “Is this just a joke? I mean, won’t our marriage be officially registered?” Archer didn’t answer and just held out his hand to ask for her ID card. Iris felt a little confused and annoyed. Why was he being so mysterious? Finally, she gave him her ID card. “If you dare to mess with my identity-” “I won’t,” Archer said bluntly. He looked at Iris’s suitcase and immediately understood her situation. Suddenly, he took her hand and led her outside. “Miss, before you officially become my wife, I won’t take you in. See you later.” Archer simply closed the door, leaving Iris speechless. A few moments later, she came to her senses and couldn’t help but curse. “You think I’m going to ask you for a place to stay? I have my own money, helloooo!” Iris snorted and pulled her suitcase away with a frown. “Isn’t my future husband a little stingy? I’ll rent a hotel room,” she muttered as she walked away. Inside the apartment, Archer smirked as he stared at Iris’s photo on her ID card. He muttered, “Being pretty isn’t enough to marry me. My wife has to be someone who is tough and can overcome her own difficulties.” *** Iris rented a room at the nearest hotel for the night. She ordered some fancy food and enjoyed herself alone. Suddenly, her cell phone rang. It was a call from Mia, her best friend. “Hello, dear. Would you like to have dinner with me?” Iris teased. “Oh, my God! Have you seen the group chat? They’re all talking about you!” Mia’s shrill voice sounded like she had just heard some earth-shattering news. “What’s going on?” Iris asked lazily. Even though she hadn’t opened the office group chat, she could guess what was happening there. “Someone is spreading rumors that you’re having an affair. That’s not true, right?” Mia asked. Exactly! Iris rolled her eyes. “Aren’t we friends? Why would you doubt me over something like that?” “It’s not that. I just... Huh, you better not read their comments. You don’t need to go to the office tomorrow either.” Mia said that because Iris was the boss’s daughter, who often skipped work. All the employees at the office knew that. She was a big slacker who only knew how to have fun. If it weren’t for her identity, she would have been kicked out of the company long ago. “No. I have to go tomorrow,” said Iris with a smile. The situation was bad for her, and she was sure there would be people who would take advantage of the momentum to show their dislike for her. “You really do like to cause trouble,” Mia muttered before finally hanging up the phone. Iris chuckled and continued eating. The next morning, she unexpectedly went to Archer’s apartment. It was still so early. Of course, her actions surprised the apartment’s occupant. Before Archer could ask, Iris said, “If we’re going to act, we have to do it completely. So... you’ll take me to the office.” Archer held back his laughter. He really didn’t expect Iris to come up with that plan. He thought she would be angry about what he did yesterday. “Are you sure you want to cause that kind of chaos?” Archer asked to confirm. “I’ve never been more sure!” Iris replied enthusiastically. The corners of Archer’s lips lifted. He didn’t know that the cute girl would be so crazy as to destroy her own reputation. She was truly an interesting person. He leaned down and suddenly whispered in her ear, “You’re pretty crazy.” Iris swallowed hard. Archer’s low voice was like a cold, sharp ice pick piercing her consciousness. She suddenly fell silent. The man stepped back, and their gazes locked. Archer’s dark blue eyes immediately dominated Iris’s icy blue ones. For a moment, he looked dangerous, but the illusion vanished as a faint smile appeared on his face. “But I like it,” he whispered. Iris was speechless. Somehow, she felt that Archer wasn’t that simple. It was as if he were hiding something behind his mask of gentleness. He did tend to smile a lot, but was that really his true self? “Come in, my dear,” Archer said with a thick British accent. And it suited his appearance perfectly. Finally, Iris sighed and followed him into the kitchen. The aroma of fried eggs and bacon filled the small kitchen. Apparently, the man had been cooking. What an interesting man. “English full breakfast?” Iris stared at the plate containing a typical English breakfast. “Are you not American?” “I did live in England for a few years,” Archer replied as he fried eggs, bacon, and sausages at the same time. “Can you toast bread?” he asked. “I can’t cook,” Iris admitted as she watched Archer. He looked so hot when he was busy cooking. His muscular arms were clearly visible under his white T-shirt. His black hair was messy. What a sexy man! “Just put the bread in the toaster.” “Ah!” Archer’s words snapped Iris out of her reverie. She finally put the bread in the toaster, watching the buttons and levers for a moment before lowering the last one. Archer turned to make sure she was doing it right. “William said you’re a spoiled girl,” he said. “Everyone says that.” Iris picked up a fork and ate Archer’s breakfast. “But the truth is?” “I’m just lazy,” she replied bluntly. “Besides, I don’t want to be good at everything.” “Why?” Archer asked. “Someone will feel threatened.” Archer smiled at her answer. “It seems like your life isn’t easy.” “Is your life easy?” Iris asked and shook her head. “It seems like being William’s bodyguard isn’t that easy either. He’s a serious, rigid, short-tempered man who pays close attention to other people’s opinions. It’s boring.” Archer couldn’t help but smile flatly. He didn’t say anything. When breakfast was ready, he ate with Iris in silence. After enjoying the delicious breakfast, Iris waited for Archer to take a shower and change his clothes. It didn’t take long for a man to do those things. After about twenty minutes, the man appeared in neat clothes. The masculine and elegant scent of his perfume spread throughout the room. Iris felt enchanted. Why did she only realize Archer’s charm after knowing him for two months? “William really didn’t fire you?” Iris asked as she followed Archer out of the apartment. The man raised the corner of his lips. “He took advantage of me. If he had fired me too, he would have gotten his comeuppance.” Iris’s eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. “Are you going to hit him? That sounds cool.” Archer suddenly stopped walking. Iris didn’t have time to brake and bumped into his sturdy back. “Damn! Why did you-” “I don’t like hitting people,” Archer said. He suddenly pulled Iris’s slim waist closer. The girl stiffened. Her eyes widened. “Except this one,” Archer whispered, then his palm slapped her round butt hard, causing a sound that echoed in the corridor. Iris gasped in shock at his sudden indecent act. He even smirked with a lewd look. “Damn you, Arch!” “Sorry, I’ve been holding back too much, Velvet Iris,” he whispered.
