Chapter 11 – Close Quarters

Ava rubbed at her temples as she stepped out of the cab that had brought her from her apartment. Work had been long and exhausting, but the thought of the company trip — a leadership retreat Sebastian had mentioned last week — had kept her motivated all morning. She had almost forgotten about it entirely until James, Sebastian’s assistant, reminded her in the afternoon. By the time she arrived at the company building to catch the bus, her stomach sank. The bus was gone, the departure time already passed, and a small group of employees was left milling around, frustrated. Ava bit her lip, panic rising. “What do I do now?” she muttered under her breath. Just then, a sleek black car rolled smoothly into the lot. The engine purred like a predator, drawing Ava’s attention immediately. James stepped out from the driver’s side, his expression calm but businesslike. “Ms. Ava,” he said briskly, opening the rear door, “Mr. Evanson wants you to join him in his car. The bus has already left, and there’s no other way.” Ava froze, her heart skipping. “Him? In his… car?” she asked, almost stammering. James raised an eyebrow, unimpressed with her hesitation. “Yes. Now. Come on.” Her mind raced as she approached the vehicle. The driver’s seat was occupied, obviously, by James, keeping the wheel steady. And then her eyes landed on the backseat. Sebastian Evanson — calm, immaculately dressed, arms crossed loosely over his chest — sat there, exuding the same controlled, magnetic authority she had been drawn to since day one. “Uh…” Ava’s voice trailed off. Her stomach fluttered, and a nervous warmth spread across her cheeks. She had not expected to be seated so close to him for the entire journey. Sebastian’s dark eyes flicked up, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Late, Ms. Ava?” His voice was calm, almost amused, yet tinged with that unspoken authority that always made her pulse race. “I… I missed the bus,” she admitted softly, trying to maintain composure while stepping carefully into the backseat beside him. Her hand brushed against the leather seat as she lowered herself, aware of every subtle movement he made. “Seems you have no choice, then,” Sebastian said smoothly, eyes tracking her every motion, his presence heavy and magnetic. “You’ll be close enough to observe… everything.” Ava’s stomach knotted. The air was thick with unspoken tension — part nervous anticipation, part excitement. She tried to keep her eyes on the window, focusing on the passing cityscape, but the quiet awareness that Sebastian was seated right next to her made it nearly impossible. James started the car, the engine’s hum filling the space between them. The city blurred past as the private vehicle glided smoothly onto the highway. The silence was almost deafening, charged with electricity. Sebastian shifted slightly, just enough that their knees nearly brushed. Ava froze for a split second, then quickly adjusted her posture. She could feel his presence — his heat, the faint scent of cologne, the unyielding authority he radiated. Her pulse raced, her mind tangled between fear and something far more thrilling. “You’re quiet,” Sebastian said, eyes briefly narrowing as he glanced at her. “Thinking about the trip, or about how uncomfortable this is?” “Both,” Ava admitted, her voice small but honest. She could feel her pulse in her throat, her stomach tightening. Sebastian smirked, leaning back casually, though his dark gaze remained on her. “Good. You should be aware of your surroundings. A lot can happen on a trip like this.” Ava swallowed hard, her hands gripping the edge of her skirt. She had been here before — in close quarters with Sebastian — but something about the car, the road, the isolation, made her feel entirely vulnerable, entirely exposed, and yet alive in a way she hadn’t expected. “You’re tense,” he murmured, almost to himself, but loud enough for her to hear. “Relax.” “I… I’m fine,” she whispered, though her hands betrayed her, twisting the fabric of her blouse. His smirk deepened, faint but noticeable. “Are you now?” He didn’t touch her, didn’t move closer, but the tension between them was undeniable — an invisible force that drew her attention despite her best efforts. Ava risked a glance at him, noting the controlled composure, the subtle amusement in his eyes, and the way his jaw tightened just slightly when their legs brushed. She couldn’t decide if he was teasing her or if the proximity made him… uneasy as well. “You seem affected by this,” he said, voice low, teasing, yet impossibly commanding. “I didn’t realize sitting next to me could be… overwhelming.” Ava’s cheeks burned. “I… it’s nothing. Just… surprised, I guess.” Sebastian’s gaze softened, just a fraction, enough to make her heart flutter. “Good. Surprise can be… enlightening,” he murmured, letting the words hang in the charged air. The rest of the ride passed with subtle tension, stolen glances, and unspoken thoughts. Ava kept her attention partly on the passing scenery, partly on the way Sebastian’s presence made her pulse race. Every slight movement he made, every shift in his posture, felt deliberate, magnetic, and thrilling. Finally, the car glided into the retreat grounds. The site was impressive — sprawling fields, rustic lodges, and a subtle buzz of staff moving around. But Ava hardly noticed, her attention entirely on Sebastian. He remained composed, calm, and impossibly intimidating, yet there was a faint tension in his posture as he stepped out of the car, walking beside her. A last-minute issue arose with the room assignments: the lodge had one remaining room available, and due to the mix-up, Ava and Sebastian were assigned to share it. Her stomach flipped. “Seems… we’ll be roommates,” Sebastian said quietly, the corner of his lips lifting in that faint smirk she recognized. “I trust this won’t be a problem?” Ava’s voice caught. “I… I guess not.” She tried to steady her breathing, aware of how her heart had sped up from both the close ride and the prospect of sharing a room with him. As they entered the room, Sebastian remained calm, unpacking his briefcase and arranging his things with precise control. Ava placed her bag on the bed quietly, stealing glances at him. The proximity, the tension, the subtle magnetic pull — it all made her pulse race. “You’ll find that this trip is… enlightening,” Sebastian said softly, leaning against the doorframe as he watched her. “And that being close has… advantages.” Ava’s stomach fluttered. She nodded, words failing her. The intensity of his gaze, the controlled yet magnetic presence, made it impossible to focus on anything else. By the time they were settled, Ava lay on her bed, heart still racing. The day had been exhausting, yes, but it had also been intoxicating. Every look, every brush of movement, every subtle teasing from Sebastian left her mind buzzing. Across the room, Sebastian sat in the chair by the desk, pretending to review some documents. His gaze, however, never fully left her. Thoughts tangled in his mind, unspoken tension simmering — a quiet acknowledgment that the attraction was mutual, though neither would admit it. Ava felt it too. Falling. Slowly, dangerously, irresistibly — into the orbit of the billionaire bad boy whose presence was thrilling, intimidating, and impossible to ignore.
