Chapter 1: You Don’t Belong Here
Ava should have left the moment she saw the chandelier. It hung above the ballroom like a galaxy made of diamonds, casting golden light over silk gowns and tailored suits that probably cost more than her yearly rent. She didn’t belong here. She knew it. The champagne in her hand felt too expensive. The heels on her feet felt too high. The laughter around her felt rehearsed. “This is insane,” she muttered under her breath. Her friend had dragged her here, insisting she had “connections.” Connections apparently meant sneaking into one of the most exclusive private galas in the city. Ava scanned the room again. Then she felt it. The shift. The quiet ripple of attention moving in one direction. Toward him. Sebastian Evanson. He didn’t need an introduction. He walked into the ballroom like he owned oxygen itself. Black suit. No tie. Collar slightly open. Dark hair. Sharp jawline. Eyes that didn’t look at people — they assessed them. Power radiated from him. Women subtly straightened. Men adjusted their posture. Ava rolled her eyes. “Ridiculous,” she murmured. Her friend gasped. “That’s Sebastian Evanson.” “Good for him,” Ava replied, lifting her champagne glass. That’s when she heard him speak. His voice was smooth. Controlled. Cold. “If they can’t survive in this world,” he was saying to a group of investors, “they shouldn’t be in it.” Ava stiffened. Maybe it was the arrogance. Maybe it was the tone. Maybe it was the way he sounded like people like her were disposable. One of the men laughed nervously. “You’re ruthless.” Sebastian’s lips curved faintly. “Only with the weak.” That did it. Ava stepped forward before she could stop herself. “Funny,” she said clearly. The group fell silent. Sebastian slowly turned his head. His eyes landed on her. For the first time, they weren’t calm. They were curious. “And what exactly is funny?” he asked. The room felt smaller. Ava’s heart pounded — but she didn’t step back. “Calling people weak because they don’t have money,” she said. “It’s predictable.” A murmur spread. No one talked to Sebastian Evanson like that. Sebastian studied her carefully. “Do I know you?” he asked. “No,” she replied. “And you don’t know the people you judge either.” A dangerous silence fell. Sebastian took a slow step toward her. “You’re bold,” he said quietly. “And you’re arrogant,” she shot back. Someone inhaled sharply. He was close now. Too close. Her fingers tightened around her champagne glass. His gaze dropped briefly to her hand. Then back to her face. “Careful,” he murmured. “Why?” she asked. Her heel slipped slightly on the polished marble floor. Her hand jerked. And the champagne spilled — directly onto his chest. Time froze. The golden liquid soaked into his black shirt. A collective gasp filled the room. Ava’s eyes widened. “Oh my God— I’m so sorry.” Sebastian looked down slowly at the spreading stain. Then back at her. Not angry. Not embarrassed. Something darker. He reached out and wrapped his fingers around her wrist. Not painfully. But firmly. “Come with me,” he said. It wasn’t a request. He guided her away from the crowd. Through the ballroom. Into a quiet private hallway. The music faded behind them. He stopped abruptly. Turned. Ava’s back touched the cool marble wall. “I didn’t come here for you,” she said, trying to steady her breathing. “I know,” he replied calmly. His eyes scanned her face slowly. “You don’t even belong in rooms like this.” She frowned. “Then why are you talking to me?” A slow, unreadable smile touched his lips. “Because,” he said quietly, “you don’t act impressed.” Her heart skipped. He stepped closer — but only slightly. “Do you know how rare that is?” he murmured. “I don’t care about rare,” she shot back. His eyes darkened. “Good,” he said softly. “I don’t like predictable.” Silence wrapped around them. Then he reached up — brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The gesture was light. Intentional. Possessive. Her breath caught. “I don’t usually remember faces from parties,” he said. “But I’ll remember yours.” Her pulse thudded. “You won’t,” she whispered. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips. Then returned to her eyes. “I already have.” The air between them shifted. Dangerous. Charged. Alive. Then suddenly— He stepped back. Straightened his cuff. And the intensity disappeared behind calm control. “Go back inside,” he said smoothly. “What?” “Your friend is looking for you.” Ava blinked. “How do you—” He didn’t answer. He simply walked past her. Just like that. Leaving her standing there. Breathless. Confused. Shaken. She returned to the ballroom. The music felt louder now. The lights brighter. Her friend rushed toward her. “Where were you?! Do you know who that is?!” Ava swallowed. “Yes,” she said quietly. “I do.” She tried to calm her racing heart. Tried to convince herself it was nothing. Just tension. Just attraction. Nothing more. But across the ballroom— She felt it. His gaze. Watching her. Not casually. Not curiously. But deliberately. And when their eyes met— He didn’t look away. Instead— His phone buzzed. He glanced down at the screen. His expression shifted slightly. Darkened. Then his eyes lifted back to her. Slow. Intent. Focused. He leaned toward the man beside him and said something quietly. The man nodded. And began walking toward her. Ava’s heart skipped. Because suddenly— This didn’t feel like coincidence anymore. And she had no idea what Sebastian Evanson had just set in motion.
