Chapter 2: Noticing My Driver

1012 Words
BEAUTINA I wasn’t the type of woman who fell in love. Maybe it was because of work. My life had always been about meetings, contracts, and decisions that affected thousands of people. There was never space for soft things like love. Even my marriage wasn’t about love. Lian and I married because of an alliance. Two powerful companies joining hands. It was simple and clean, just the way businessmen liked it. We even signed a contract. There was no love, no emotions and no expectations. It was just marriage on paper and for a long time, that was exactly how it was. But two years later, something changed. I changed. Maybe it started the day I found out I was pregnant. I still remembered the way my heart raced when I saw the test. The way my hands trembled. The way I stared at the little blue line like it had just changed my entire world. That was the first time I started imagining a real family and maybe that was when I started falling for him. When Kaylie was born, I thought everything would finally be different. I thought our marriage would turn into something real. But that was when everything began to fall apart, slowly and quietly like glass cracking under pressure. At first it was small things... Late nights. Cold answers. Phone calls he took outside. Then one day, I saw the truth with my own eyes. Lian wasn’t just cheating. He was cheating with Kayla. My best friend. The same woman who stood beside me when my own family barely cared. The same woman I trusted with my secrets. The same woman who used to hold my hand and promised she would always protect me. I had even named my son after her like a fool. The memory still burned inside my chest. I filed for divorce immediately. If they wanted each other so badly, they could have each other. I refused to stay in a marriage where I was the only stupid one. Those months were the worst of my life. I stopped going to the company. I stayed inside the house, crying like someone had ripped my heart open... and then Lian showed up one day. Standing at my door like nothing had happened. He said he wanted custody of Kaylie. My fingers tightened around the fork in my hand. No. My son was the only good thing left in my life. I would never let him take that away too. Never. A soft cough pulled me out of my thoughts. I lifted my head from the dining table and my eyes landed on him.... John. He was standing near the entrance of the dining room, one hand resting casually in his pocket. For a second… I forgot to breathe. Why had I never noticed him before? He was wearing a white long sleeve shirt, the sleeves folded just slightly above his wrists. The fabric stretched across his shoulders in a way that made it impossible not to notice how broad he was. His brown hair looked messy in that effortless way some men had like he hadn’t tried, but still looked perfect. And his eyes… Those ash-gray eyes were watching me again calmly and sharply. Almost amused. My gaze slid down to his lips. They were full and pink. My stomach tightened suddenly. Why was I noticing things like this now? John had been my driver for three years. Three years. Yet this morning, he looked like a man I had never seen before. Actually… He looked better than Lian. The thought slipped into my head before I could stop it and it shocked me. I used to think Lian was the most handsome man in the city. Maybe that was because I never really looked at anyone else. I didn’t go out much. I didn’t socialize. I didn’t waste time staring at people. Especially not my driver. But now? Now my driver was standing there looking like some kind of dangerous temptation. And the worst part… The memory of yesterday’s kiss flashed through my mind. Warm lips. Strong hands. The way my body had almost leaned toward him. Damn. For a crazy second, I wanted him to kiss me again. “Missing me already?” His voice snapped me out of my thoughts so fast my fork almost fell. “Your stare could dig a hole through me, beauty.” I blinked. Heat rushed to my face especially at the nickname he had given me. “I wasn’t staring,” I said quickly, waving my hand in the air like I was brushing away invisible flies. He chuckled. “Don’t pretend.” I frowned at him. “Why would I admire my driver?” His expression shifted slightly. It was just a little like he hadn’t expected that answer. “I was just zoning out,” I added, picking up my fork again. “I wasn’t looking at you.” He stared at me for another second. Then he nodded once. “I’ll wait outside.” I didn’t look at him again. I simply nodded and focused on my food. A moment later, I heard his footsteps fade away. The dining room suddenly felt quiet., too quiet. I poked my food slowly. What was wrong with him? Did he expect me to compliment him or something? Did he want me to say he was handsome? He was my driver. I almost scoffed and yet… Why did my thoughts keep going back to him? Why did my lips still remember the feeling of his? I pressed my fork harder into the plate. He was just my driver. Nothing more. And if he refused to leave after I sacked him yesterday, then fine. He could keep working. It didn’t mean anything between us had to change. I finished eating quickly, even though I hadn’t eaten half of it. Just as I stood up, one of the maids walked in. “Ma’am,” she said softly, bowing slightly. “Someone left this letter for you yesterday.”
