BEAUTINA
By the time the last meeting ended, my head was pounding.
Files were scattered across my desk like they had decided to fight each other while I wasn’t looking. My eyes burned from staring at documents and numbers the entire day.
Sometimes I wondered if owning a company was really worth it.
If this company wasn’t mine, I might have already resigned from this job and run away to somewhere quiet.
But unfortunately for me, the company was mine.
So running away wasn’t an option.
All I wanted right now was to go home, take a long shower, and sleep until my brain stopped hurting.
“I’m through for the day, ma’am.”
My assistant manager stood in front of my desk, holding a stack of files against her chest. She looked exhausted too.
I nodded slowly. “You can leave.” She blinked, surprised.
Usually I left the office before most people did but today I was still sitting here.
“Are you not leaving yet?” she asked carefully.
I glanced at the clock on the wall.
7:25 PM.
My brows slowly pulled together. My driver was supposed to be here already. “I’ll leave soon,” I said.
She nodded politely and walked out of the office, closing the door behind her.
The building slowly became quiet.
Most of the workers had already gone home.
But my driver was nowhere to be seen.
I reached for my phone, irritation already creeping into my chest.
What was wrong with him?
John had never been late before, not once.
And today of all days, when my head was already aching, he decided to disappear.
I opened our chat and typed quickly.
(Me: Where are you?)
I stared at the screen.
There was no reply.
My irritation grew.
I was about to call him when another call suddenly came in.
The name on the screen made my chest tighten.
Mrs Skylar.
Lian’s mother.
I already knew why she was calling. It was because of Kaylie. My son was staying with her for now while the court kept dragging the custody case.
I quickly answered the call.
The screen lit up.
“Hello Tina.”
Her voice came through first.
I saw her sitting on a couch, holding someone in her arms.
Then a small face suddenly appeared on the screen. My heart instantly softened.
“Mommy! How are you?!”
Kaylie’s excited voice filled the phone.
My lips curved into a smile without me even trying.
“My baby!” I said, leaning closer to the screen. “Mommy is good. How are you too?”
“I’m fineee!” he said loudly, stretching the word the way children always did. His round cheeks were puffed up and his small hands waved at the camera. “But I miss youuu.”
My chest squeezed painfully.
“I miss you too,” I whispered.
“When will you come pick me?” he asked suddenly. His small face looked serious now.
I opened my mouth to answer but Mrs Skylar spoke first.
“Mommy will come when she’s less busy,” she said calmly.
I saw the way her eyes flickered toward me. “She’s always busy.”
Kaylie turned his little head toward me. Waiting like he was asking if what she said was true.
A sharp feeling stabbed my chest.
She was making it sound like I didn’t have time for my own child even though they were the ones trying to take him away from me but I understood what she was doing.
She didn’t want to drag Kaylie into our problems.
So I forced a small smile.
“Grandma is right,” I said softly.
Kaylie nodded like he had just accepted an important fact.
“Then finish work quickly and come pick me,” he said seriously.
My throat tightened. “I will.”
“I love you!” I added quickly.
“I love you toooo!” he shouted happily.
Before I could say anything else, the screen went dark.
Mrs Skylar had ended the call.
The quiet office suddenly felt heavier.
I leaned back in my chair and sighed. I had to win this custody battle.
No matter what it took.
Kaylie was mine.
No one was taking him away from me.
I glanced at the clock again.
7:35 PM.
It was already dark outside and my driver was still missing.
My irritation returned immediately.
I grabbed my phone again and was about to call him when my office door suddenly opened without knocking. I looked up sharply. John walked in like he owned the place.
My anger exploded instantly.
I stood up from my chair. “What the hell is wrong with you?” I snapped. He stopped a few steps inside the office. “Why are you just coming now?” I continued angrily. “Don’t you know I sleep early?”
He didn’t look worried.
He didn’t even look guilty.
If anything, he looked… calm
Which only made me angrier.
