CHAPTER 20Inspector Bull burst through the door at the head of the stairs and closed it behind him. He crossed the small square reception hall in a stride and stood looking down at the body of a young man sprawled on his face in the middle of the black velour rug, an automatic pistol clutched in his hand. His face was turned towards the door, and he had shot himself through the mouth. The top of his head was a shattered and horrible mass. Bull heard a sound behind him and turned sharply to keep Molly Cameron away. He stopped short as he turned, and in spite of long training his jaw dropped. Standing in the door leading to a mauve-tiled bath beyond him stood Mr. Gwatley-Wells. His face was grey and haggard and suddenly old. He was looking at the object on the floor, hardly aware of Bull.
