CHAPTER 19Bull rang the bell at a large sombre house in the middle of a block of houses exactly alike off Bayswater Road. A mousy servant girl in a crumpled cap and spotted apron opened the door and peered out suspiciously. “Madame’s not in,” she said quickly, and started to close the door. “Is Miss Cameron in?” The girl looked at him and wiped her nose on the back of her hand dubiously. “Madame don’t allow gentlemen in the young ladies’ rooms, sir,” she said.
