CHAPTER 18To the men who make up the four Departments (S Department being excepted, for it may possibly have romance in its own quiet way) that in turn make up the Commissioner’s Office, popularly known as New Scotland Yard, the business of catching criminals is a methodical never-ending job of work, done honestly, intelligently and with infinite pains. Few cases that come to the grey walls on the Embankment stay unsolved, and when the press, wanting something more sensational for the moment, denounce the police and list the unsolved crimes of the past five years, Scotland Yard is not annoyed. Nine times out of ten it knows the man it wants. The evidence may not be enough to convict before a jury of peers, but Scotland Yard watches, waiting the day when its man can no longer walk the dark
