Hunter POV
I was in the backyard during the party when I saw Venus for the first time that night.
She looked gorgeous in a stunning red dress. The dress showed just enough skin to make me imagine all the dirty things I wanted to do to her. A growl rose to my throat, knowing that so many of the other wolves were probably thinking the same thing about her.
My mate was currently all alone and she was looking around as if she was looking for someone or something. A small bit of hope rose in my chest at the possibility that she could be looking for me.
I excused myself from the group of guys I had been talking to and went up to my mate.
"Looking for someone?" I asked her.
She turned around startled to see me.
"Yeah. I came here with Harvey and we were playing pool when he left to get some drinks. It's been over half an hour and I haven't seen him."
I did my best to keep my emotions off my face. I didn't want to show her how upset I was. Not only was she wanting to see Harvey and not me, but I wasn't happy with the fact that he had ditched her at the party.
"I can help you find him." I offered.
"No, you don't have to. Why don't you go back to enjoying the party. I'll find him eventually."
"Nonsense. I can't let you look for him all on your own. Come on."
I took her hand and led her back inside the pack house. It was very crowded and he was more than likely to be in there. As we walked, I tried not to focus on how well her hand fit in mine. It was crazy to think she would be fighting this so much.
When I spotted Kyle across the makeshift dancefloor, I went to him. He was busy talking to some girl, but there was a chance he'd seen Harvey around.
"Dude, have you seen Harvey anywhere?"
"No. Why do you care about him?" Kyle was right to be confused. Harvey and I had never really gotten along very well.
I was about to explain when the girl next to him spoke up.
"He left the party with one of my friends." She said.
"Thank you."
I looked back to Venus and took her outside so we could talk. It wasn't hard for me to tell that she was trying to hold in her disappointment.
The front yard was mostly clear of people, besides those coming and going from the party.
"Are you ok?" I asked.
"Yeah. I'm not upset he's with a girl if that's what you're wondering. It's not like that between us." She shrugged.
"Then what's wrong?"
"Nothing. I'm just tired and he was my ride."
"You can stay here tonight. I'll let you sleep in my room." I told her.
She looked hesitant but there was no way I was taking no for an answer. I pulled her upstairs to my room, where it was quiet for the most part.
"You can sleep here. I'll see you in the morning."
Before she could object at all, I kissed her forehead and left her to get her rest.
*******************
It was about eight in the morning when I entered my bedroom to check on my mate. She was just climbing out of my bed when I stepped inside.
"Good morning."
She turned to me looking unsure. It didn't go passed me that she put on one of my shirts to wear for bed last night.
"Thank you for letting me stay here last night. I really appreciate it, but I just can't do this." Her saying this only disappointed me further.
"Can't do what?" I asked.
"I can't be with you. I don't want a mate." Her eyes were watering with unshed tears.
"Ok. Let's just go down stairs and get some breakfast. After that I'll take you home." I told her.
"Ok." She whispered.
I really didn't feel like taking her back to her apartment, but I would do anything she asked of me.
Last night was the first time I've seen her act so vulnerable. It felt amazing to be the one to save her and all I wanted to do was carry that into this morning.
She wouldn't tell me why she didn't want to have me as her mate. I could only assume it was because of something that had happened in her past. Whatever it was couldn't have been good, and for that reason, I needed to be patient with her.
I started to lead her out of my bedroom before she glanced up at me curiously.
"What if somebody sees me in just your shirt?" She asked.
"It's a Saturday, everyone will still be in bed. And besides, my shirt covers more of you than that dress you wore last night." I told her.
She frowned but didn't say anything else in response.
We came into the empty kitchen and I grabbed the ingredients to make pancakes before asking her to grab a bowl for me.
Venus didn't mind and made her way near the cupboards I had pointed out to her. I admired her as she reached upwards to retrieve a bowl from the cabinet. Though she wasn't able to get her hands on the bowl her shirt rid up as she stretched her arms upward.
Focused too intently on her task, she hardly noticed me catching a glimpse of her pink colored panties. When she finally gave up her shirt fell back down and I turned as if I had been fiddling with a task the whole time.
"I can't reach it. Do you mind getting it instead?" She asked.
"Of course not." I said smiling.
When I grabbed the bowl effortlessly, I heard the quiet murmur, "Show off." When I turned around we began mixing the pancake ingredients together.
Even though she didn't want to be with me, I could tell that through the simple act of cooking breakfast we were meant to be together. We practically worked in sync, knowing who would take care of the next part of the process.
I was falling fast for Venus. All I wanted was her love and she refused to give it to me. If only I could understand why it had to be this difficult.
Our final product turned out mostly round and perfectly golden. Venus practically inhaled her breakfast as we ate together. I, however, had wanted to have a slow meal so we could talk and enjoy each other's company. She was having non of that.
She urged me to finish my food so quickly I was surprised that I didn't end up choking on it. Since I was taking too long, Venus ran up to my room to change back into her other clothes. When she came back down she rushed us to the garage where my car sat.
On the way to her apartment, the only time we talked was when I asked where her apartment was. It wasn't exactly what I had been hoping for but it was better than nothing. The bright side was that I could finally find out where she was staying.
When we finally arrived at her apartment, I opened my door as soon as she prepared to get out.
"What are you doing?" She asked me.
"Well obviously I'm going to make sure that you arrive up to your apartment safely." I told her.
"Thanks but you've done enough by getting me here. I think I'll be fine without you." She said.
"Just let me walk you up to your door and then I'll leave." I said.
"Fine."
I opened the door for her and she didn't say thanks or even look at me. I thought our morning together had gone relatively well but any time I tried to get her to open up she just shut down even further. One day I would get past her walls.
We stepped onto the elevator and Venus went into the far corner. No doubt trying to keep her distance from me.
Instead of giving her the space that she wanted, I moved closer to her when the doors closed. She squeezed herself further into the corner quickly realizing how trapped she was. A part of me wanted to press myself against her and make her look into my eyes. She had beautiful eyes and right now they were looking at the wall trying to avoid my gaze.
Going against all my instincts I let her keep the small distance between us. Just being close to her was good enough for now. It wasn't until the doors opened again that she rushed past me and down the hall. I caught up to her when she was pulling a key out of her pocket in front of a door that read 5F.
Her fingers fumbled with the keys as she noticed my proximity and they fell through her grasp. Before she could fully reach down I picked up the keys and placed them in her hand. The sparks from the mate bond ignited at the touch and she let out a gasp.
She cleared her throat before looking away. "Thanks."
No matter how tough she acted, I made her nervous. I liked that she wasn't as unaffected by me as she pretended to be.
She unlocked the door and stepped inside. Before she could slam the door in my face I stopped it with my foot.
"What do you want now? You said if I let you walk me up to my door you would leave me alone." She spoke irritated.
"Why do you keep pushing me away?" I asked her.
"I told you that I don't want a mate."
"You keep saying that but why?"
"Why should I tell you?" She retaliated.
"Because your hatred for mates effects me. I have a right to know why you won't be with me." I said pushing my way into her apartment.
I slammed the door closed and she flinched. There was fear in her eyes, probably from the sight of anger in mine.
"You're a demanding asshole like every other alpha! That's why!" Venus wasn't going to back down from me even if she was afraid. Her disrespect only made my wolf angrier.
"And you're a cynical b***h! We could be amazing together if you weren't so f*****g impossible all the time! I shouldn't have expected so much from a rogue."
"You're right. The moon goddess matched you with a heartless rogue. I will never love you."
That was the worst possible thing she could've said. I balled my hands into fists before turning to punch the wall. When I heard the scream from behind me, I closed my lids and took deep breaths. Regardless of how angry she makes me, I couldn't hurt her physically.
"I've tried to be patient, but I need a Luna for my pack. That Luna is going to be you whether you like it or not. You're mine and I will make you love me one way or another." I growled at her.
"Go ahead. You can try but I am going to resist you until you finally realize that I am not your luna."
"I'll let you think that for now." There was no use in arguing with her any longer today. The more she fought with me the angrier I would get. I left knowing that it was the smartest thing to do as I couldn't risk hurting her.
