Fragments of Desire
Ch- 1:
*The Letter You Were Never Meant to Find*
---
Maya slumped on the rickety steps outside *The Wandering Quill*, the dusty little bookstore wedged between the neon blare of the 24-hour convenience store and an all-night diner advertising “coffee strong enough to wake the dead.” It was her sanctuary the past few weeks, a place she came to run from her own thoughts that churned incessantly like summer thunder.
“Hey, you’re still here,” the owner called from inside, her voice sharp but not unkind.
Maya grinned half-heartedly. “Yeah, I’m a regular now.”
Her hands wrapped around a chipped ceramic mug of lukewarm chamomile tea she’d stolen from the counter. The quiet buzz of fluorescent bulbs and the scent of aged paper made this place feel like a bubble, a safe little pocket insulated from the city’s thundering pace.
Her gaze traced the cracked brick wall opposite, where layers of peeling posters told stories of past concerts, protests, and lost loves—all faded and layered like memories stacked on each other, unread and overlooked.
Maya sat here often, notebook in hand, hoping inspiration would strike. But lately, her thoughts felt tangled, like trying to catch smoke with bare hands.
She was supposed to be graduating in a matter of weeks, everyone kept reminding her, but Maya’s future looked like a canvas splattered with random, chaotic strokes. What did she want? Who was she, really?
Her fingers brushed an old envelope peeking out from beneath a pile of neglected paperbacks on the bench beside her. Curious, she picked it up, feeling its brittle texture and sealed wax stamp. The handwriting on the front was looping and elegant:
*To be read only by Emily.*
Maya frowned. Emily? She didn’t know anyone named Emily. In a sudden, unexplainable impulse, she broke the seal and unfolded the letter inside.
---
*Dear Emily,*
*If you are reading this, then something has gone horribly wrong—much more than you can imagine.*
*You must know the truth about us. Our family. The lies that bind us like chains.*
*Do not trust anyone from Oakwood University. Not even those closest to you. And whatever you do, do not look for the shadows that dance at midnight; they do not welcome the curious.*
*I know this is confusing, but I promise, you’ll understand one day.*
*—A.*
---
Maya’s heart hammered wildly. This wasn’t just any letter. It wasn’t a lost love note or an overdue library book notice. It was a secret. Dangerous maybe, or at least urgent.
Oakwood University was where she went—the same place she’d shared late nights screaming into pillows, studying for tests, and avoiding questions about the future.
But who was Emily? And who was “A”?
Questions swirled through her brain, sharper and louder than ever before. The calm of her hiding spot shattered in one jarring moment.
---
She looked around. The narrow street was nearly deserted except for a solitary figure across the road, leaning against a lamppost, the shadow from the flickering streetlight making their features hard to see. The figure’s head tilted slightly, as if watching her, waiting or warning.
Maya swallowed hard. It felt like she’d just crossed some invisible line, stepping into a story far bigger than herself, a story that might rewrite everything she thought she knew.
The letter slipped into her jacket pocket. Tomorrow, she thought, she’d find Emily. Or at least try.
---
The mug in her hands was empty now, the warmth gone like the safety she felt moments ago. She stood, the worn wooden steps creaking beneath her feet, and walked slowly toward the diner's glowing windows.
She caught her reflection in the glass—dark circles under her eyes, a smudge of tear, and in her gaze, something unfamiliar: a flicker of determination.
No more hiding.
---
The bell above the diner's door jingled as she stepped inside, the scent of frying bacon and brewing coffee filling the air.
Maya took the corner booth by the window and pulled out her phone.
A name flashed in her mind.
Emily.
Whoever you are, she whispered silently, I’m coming to find you.Cont-
