Chapter Five
The second week certainly wasn’t good. Jenny got the cane three times.
The first time was on Monday morning, and seemed peculiarly unexpected. She didn’t realise she was in trouble till moments beforehand.
Cal had a big delivery to carry to the kitchen that morning, so the duty senior told Jenny to help her with it. “You’ve permission to fall out from Class for fifteen minutes,” she said. “Be there by quarter past.”
“Right Officer.”
Jenny and Cal carried the boxes from Goods Reception and put them down. Between them it wasn’t difficult, and Jenny was early, so she sat down on a box. Then Cal said, “Remember that exercise, Comprehension One?” She was referring to a Class exercise which she’d been given on her first day in Class, and had periodically grumbled about to Jenny
