Chapter Nine She wrote to ask her brother Darren not to visit the following Saturday. Her appearance would show that something had happened, and more than ever she didn’t want him to know. So she told him that she’d volunteered for a one day special duty which would give her more time on future Saturdays. Presumably the prison censor saw it and knew it wasn’t true, but the letter was sent on. There wasn’t much family news, when he came the Saturday after. Their mother (their father was dead) was having a hard time with her bad hip, and needed the money for a hip replacement – it turned out that the medical insurance from when she’d worked didn’t cover it. Darren had some money but it wasn’t enough. He made it clear there was no question of Jenny being asked to give away her few savings,
