Chapter 1: The Unexpected Text
Twenty-year-old Hope Anderson stared at her reflection in the mirror, her fingers tracing the faint scar that ran along her upper lip. It was a constant reminder of the surgery she’d had as a child, a surgery that fixed her cleft lip and palate but couldn’t erase the years of insecurity that followed.
Growing up, Hope had always felt different. She was the girl with the scar, the girl who couldn’t quite pronounce certain words, the girl who avoided smiling too wide. She watched her friends, their faces glowing with confidence, their lives filled with laughter and dates. She wondered what it would be like to have a boyfriend, someone who would look at her with love, someone who wouldn’t see the scar but the girl beneath it.
College was a whirlwind of textbooks, deadlines, and late-night study sessions. Hope and her friends were neck-deep in preparing for their exams, their lives a blur of caffeine and stress. One night, as Hope scrolled through her phone, a barrage of notifications popped up. She skimmed through them, her eyes tired, until one message stopped her cold.
“You’re so beautiful, will you marry me?”
Hope’s breath hitched. She reread the message, her heart pounding. It was from someone she didn’t even know, someone who had somehow found her number. She didn’t want to reply, didn’t want to engage with this stranger, but the word “beautiful” echoed in her mind. It was a word she rarely heard, a word that felt like a whisper of hope in the quiet corners of her heart.
Taking a deep breath, she typed a reply. "Who is this?"
She sent the message, her fingers trembling. She didn’t know what to expect, but something inside her, a tiny spark of curiosity, urged her to find out.
The next morning, Hope woke up to a new message. It was from the same unknown sender, and it read, "My name is Joe Fernandez, but you can call me Joe. I saw your picture on a friend's i********: and I just knew I had to talk to you."
Hope’s heart raced. She felt a mix of fear and excitement. She had no idea what was happening, but she knew this was the beginning of something… something that could change everything.
