Shards of broken hearts

“Beep” “Beep Beep” “Beep Bee-” The pesky alarm sound kept on ringing until it was turned off abruptly, it was already 9am when Amelia Westwood woke up from her slumber. She stood up straight and looked to the bed side seeing that it was nothing but an empty space no one was beside her. Her husband was nowhere to be seen in her room that morning. Calmly she stood up from the bed and went straight into the shower to take her bath. After she was done and out of the shower she turned to look at the Calendar placed on the vanity table in the room to check the date, to see that it's their wedding anniversary today. She sighed heavily and walked away from it to dress, her hair tied down simply with a low bun with two strands left at the front, she wore a white floral pattern dress that was a bit over her knees, she picked up a red lipstick from one of the drawers and put it on then prepared for the day as a normal day. She got downstairs to see her son getting ready for school while eagerly waiting for the school bus beside Ezekiel, their young house butler at the front door Amelia rushed outside to give her son a big kiss. “MUMMY!” her little son louis called out eagerly and happy to see her while he rushed to give her a big hug, She bent down and adjusted his collar well while her face lift up with a smile and said “Someone is eager for school today” “ Well, we are going on a trip today to the museum mommy, I told you this last night.” “ The teacher said if we are lucky we might be able to see some dinosaurs” Louis said while eagerly emphasizing on the dinosaur, Amelia chuckled knowing how much her son loves dinosaurs. The school bus came, interrupting the mother and sons conversation “I have to go now” “Bye” Ezekiel took him towards the bus while helping him carry his school bag and boarding, and soon the bus left. “Has Natheniel been home this morning?” she asked. “No, Sire hasn't been home for the past week. But he might come home today due to today being the 6th wedding anniversary for you both, should I help make some little preparation for it while we wait for him?” Ezekiel said while holding neither a smile nor an expression on his face while casually replying her “No it's fine, no need. You know how he is during days like this, he would have prepared things himself if he wanted today to be celebrated as usual. Probably today isn’t the day either so no need” she replied, her smile slipped from her little by little while a sigh left her lips. It's been two years since they celebrated their anniversary “Let's get into today's business, shall we?” She said while trying to force a smile on her face. While she was helping Ezekiel and the other maids to take care of the house since she wouldn't be going to work today, She could hear the maids whispering across the hall “Did you hear? Today is madam and sire's 6th anniversary and sire isn't home today” a maid said while cleaning the corridor “We've rarely seen him these days. He only comes home 4 or 3 times a week, the other two previous anniversaries weren't celebrated and it was moved as a normal day. Why would you think today would be different?” Another one replied “Or perhaps has sire stopped loving her?” The maids stopped talking immediately they saw Ezekiel walking towards them and Amelia not too far from the corridor immediately, they got back to work before they end up losing their jobs because of their loose tongue. Amelia's gaze started to linger on nothing in particular, her eyes became glassy with a faraway shine She wasn't really seeing anyone in the room she was watching the past Her heart wretched in pain and tear drops almost leaving her eyes Normally on days like this Nathaniel would cancel all the meetings he had for the day everyday on their anniversary, he would rush and come home a night before, the next morning he would prepare a lot of meal for her mostly her favorite dishes together with Ezekiel's help but he does most of the things by himself and then he wakes her up with a kiss on the forehead before the alarm went off The whole day would be spent with the both of them with their son louis But now things have changed, for the past two years her husband had changed He barely did anything as such, he doesn't even come home like he used to Perhaps work is holding him down that he couldn't cancel, or has he indeed stopped loving her like the maid whispered she kept on about this about to herself A faint smile tugged her lips, though it never quite reached her eyes. While she kept on thinking about all this, she went up to her room to arrange the place Perhaps getting herself busy like this would distract her for the day While cleaning she saw a shadow of an item reflecting from under the bed she knelt down to check and there she found an old box, she opened it to see the content of the box Just to see it contained photo albums of her and her husband, and some with their son louis It was placed with some old love letters usually written to her on their anniversaries or at a random Then she started remembering how her husband would take pictures of the three of them during holidays, special seasons or anniversaries, and write a letter to them on every occasion no Matter where he is in any part of the world A smile wrapped around her face while she shuffled the pictures and looked at them one by one and read through the letters Her husband has always been so sweet and loving to her She felt like perhaps something went wrong, What did she do to him? What did she do wrong? Or did she say something wrong to him that made him decide he can't forgive her and act this way towards her. While she was going through it a knock sounded at the door and someone entered the room She turned around to check who it was Could it be her husband?
