Why did they betrayed me?
I walked into my boyfriend's house with an eviction notice in my bag, and found him in bed with my best friend. "Ethan? Are you home?" I called, closing the door behind me. The small click of the lock sounded too loud in the quiet house. I slipped off my shoes by the door, the way I always did. I had been here enough times that I didn't think twice about walking in. My spare key was still on my keychain, a sign of the trust we once had. Usually, he called back from the living room or came to meet me with that easy smile I had grown used to. That smile that used to make me feel safe. Today, there was only a brief silence. "I need to talk to you," I called again, louder this time. My hand tightened around the strap of my handbag. Inside it, folded carefully, was the eviction notice. The paper had been in my bag all morning, but I had read it so many times that I hardly needed to look at it anymore. Two months of unpaid rent. Three months to leave the apartment. The words were burned into my memory. My landlord, Mr. Davidson, had made it clear that he would not keep waiting forever. He had been kind at first, but kindness has limits when rent is not paid. I had been trying to work out what to do ever since the notice arrived. My savings were gone. My salary was barely enough to cover food and transport. I didn't have enough saved to cover the back rent and find a new place at the same time. That was why I had come to Ethan. Months ago, when my mother got sick and I had to send money home, I had given Ethan almost everything I had left. Five thousand dollars. It was all my savings. He had promised to keep it safe for me. He had a better bank account, he said. It would be safer with him. I believed him because I loved him. I trusted him with my money the way I trusted him with my heart. Now I needed every bit of it back. It was not a choice anymore. It was survival. I heard a sound from the bedroom. A soft sound, like sheets moving. Before I could call again, I heard a woman laugh. The laugh was light, intimate, familiar in a way that made my blood run cold. I knew that voice. I had heard it over coffee at our favorite café, on late-night phone calls when we talked about everything and nothing, and during long conversations when Bridget and I shared things we didn't tell anyone else. We had been friends since college. She was my sister in every way that mattered. For a moment, I stood frozen in the hallway, trying to tell myself there must be a simple explanation. Maybe Bridget had come to visit. Maybe she was helping Ethan with something for my birthday. Maybe I was imagining things because I was so stressed about the rent. Then I heard Ethan's voice, low and close, followed by another laugh from Bridget. A laugh that belonged in a bedroom. My heart started to pound so loudly I could hear it in my ears. I walked toward the bedroom. My legs felt heavy, like I was walking through water. The door was open, just a few inches, but enough. I looked inside and stopped breathing. Ethan was sitting on the bed with Bridget. They were kissing, his arms wrapped around her while she held him close, her hands in his hair. The afternoon light came through the blinds and fell across them. They were so absorbed in each other that neither had noticed me standing in the doorway. They looked like a couple. A real couple. For a second, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were showing me. I wanted to close my eyes and open them again and see something else. Anything else. Ethan, the man I loved, the man I had prayed for, the man I had trusted with my future, was kissing Bridget, the woman I had called my best friend for eight years. Then Bridget turned her head and saw me. Her smile vanished instantly. Her eyes widened. Ethan pulled away so quickly that the movement almost looked clumsy. He scrambled back against the headboard. "Maya—" I stepped back as if he had slapped me. "No." Ethan pushed himself upright, reaching for his shirt that was on the floor. "Wait. Let me explain." "What is there to explain?" I asked. My voice came out thinner than I expected, barely a whisper. "I saw you." Bridget pulled the sheet over her lap, avoiding my eyes. Her cheeks were red. Ethan put on his shirt with shaking hands. Neither of them looked genuinely sorry. They looked caught. Like two children caught stealing. My chest tightened until it hurt to breathe. I had come here worried about rent, about where I would live, about how I would survive the next few months. I had come here hoping to collect my own money and figure out how to live. I had never imagined I would walk into this. This kind of betrayal was not in any plan I had made. "How could you do this to me?" I asked. I was looking at Ethan, but I meant both of them. Ethan put on his shirt fully now. "You're getting the wrong idea." I stared at him. "The wrong idea? You were kissing her. In your bed. What is the right idea, Ethan? Tell me." "Maya, calm down." "Don't tell me to calm down." My voice rose, finally finding strength. "Don't you dare tell me to calm down." Bridget finally looked up, her face now composed, almost defensive. "You don't have to talk to him like that." I turned toward her slowly, in disbelief. "Are you serious right now?" "I'm saying you should let him speak." "Let him speak?" My voice broke. "You're my best friend. You were at my apartment last week, eating my food, telling me everything would be okay. You're in bed with my boyfriend, and you want me to give him a chance to explain?" Bridget's expression hardened. It was a look I had never seen before. Cold. "Maybe you should ask yourself why things got to this point, Maya." I stared at her, stunned. The room seemed to tilt. "What does that mean?" "You heard me." "No, I want you to say it. Tell me how this is my fault. Tell me how I made you sleep with my boyfriend." Ethan rubbed his forehead, agitated. "Bridget, stop. Don't." But Bridget had already begun, and she seemed to want to hurt me now. "You act like everything has to happen your way. You're always talking about what you believe, about prayer, about church, about what God wants. Maybe Ethan got tired of it. Maybe he wanted someone who is... easier to be with." I looked at Ethan. I waited for him to tell Bridget she was wrong, or at least to admit that none of this excused what they had done. To defend me, just once. He said nothing. He just stood there, looking at the floor. "Is that what you think?" I asked him, my voice shaking. "That I made you do this? Because I pray?" "I didn't say that." "Then say something! Say something true for once!" He looked away. That silence hurt almost as much as the sight of them together. It confirmed everything. I had trusted both of them. I had talked to Bridget about my relationship with Ethan, about the disagreements we had, and about my hopes for the future. I had told her about our fights about faith, about how I wanted God to be at the center of our lives and he didn't. I had believed that my friend cared about me enough not to use those private conversations against me. I was wrong. I turned back to Ethan, forcing myself to focus on why I came. The eviction notice felt like it was burning through my bag. "How long has this been going on?" Neither answered. "How long?" I shouted this time. Bridget pulled the sheet closer around herself. "It's not that simple." "It looks pretty simple to me." "You don't know everything that's happened between you two," Bridget said, trying to sound wise. "Relationships are complicated." "I know what I just walked in on. And I know I need my money back." At the mention of money, Ethan's expression changed. I noticed it immediately. A flash of panic, then annoyance.
