Chapter Three: Mr Mysterious and Moody

2149 Words
Reports needed to be looked at and filed properly, and nobody was going to do them for Robert, so he had to sit in the office at late hours to do what needed to be done. A sneeze suddenly bubbled out of him startling his assistant Eric that was sat in the office with him, keeping his company for lack of better description. Eric hurriedly got up to turn the air conditioner to a warmer setting. He would have hated for his boss to get sick. Eric was tall and gangly, not exactly filled out yet making him look like a little high school boy. He could do his job like no other which is why he works as Robert’s first assistant. Robert didn’t do well with delinquents, he needed someone who could move at the snap of his expensive fingers, and Eric was a great fit for that description. Eric’s blonde hair was slicked back in a low man bun and his body was clad in a black suit with blue undershirt, little less expensive than his boss’s over the top expensive Armani suit and loafers. The pay was good working for Robert, so Eric could afford a little luxury. Meanwhile outside the door, a commotion was brewing. Before Eric could see what the problem was, the door flung open without a knock and in walked a model like lady covered in the finest Versace dress and extremely tall heels about 10cm high. Eric would have hated for the lady to use those heels on him in a fight, they looked deadly. Robert didn’t even look up from his desk at the noise that was now inside his office. “I’m sorry, I tried stopping her but she wouldn’t listen to me.” The secretary held her head down as she spoke. Eric waved the young woman away and turned to the woman who dared disturb his boss while he was busy. The woman’s hair cascaded down her back in curly auburn waves. Her body was held tightly by the wine red dress she was wearing, and her lips were covered in a sinful red lipstick. Her eyes were like pools of blue and she did them sultrily with mascara giving her a sexy mysterious vibe. She walked in like she owned the place and nobody could stop her. She fell down on the couch with a dramatic swoop and waited for Robert to acknowledge her. The man in question didn’t even lift his head at the commotion the woman caused, the only way you could tell he knew about the woman in his office is the crease in his eyebrows that wasn’t there before. The woman started to get agitated as the minutes went by and Robert still didn’t lift his head from the reports he was scanning thoroughly with his eyes. She cleared her throat to see if that would get his attention. When it didn’t work the first time she did it again, and again. After the fourth time, Robert couldn’t take the annoyance anymore, so without lifting his head he addressed her, “Is something the matter?” he asked icily. “Finally. It’s like I’m invisible or something.” The woman scoffed. “You have a minute to get to the point Ada.” Robert growled at her, with his eyes still plastered on the paper in his hands. She played with the beautiful gold necklace on her neck as she decided if she should go ahead and tell him what she came here about or if she should just forget about it. “Fine. My sister is hosting a grand ball next Friday, it’s like a birthday party and business event rolled into one. She asked me to invite you.” She leaned forward while pushing up her chest hoping that Robert would take one glance at her but failing. “No thanks. I have no time.” Robert shot down her hopes. He was still busily typing on his laptop, going back and forth with reading the paper and typing. Ada was bubbling with anger at that point. It was unbelievable to her that he didn’t even spare her a glance since she stepped into his office. All that effort dressing up for him gone to waste since he won’t even look at her. She made sure to pick out her most seductive dress that she was sure would turn his head but he didn’t glance at her, not to mention do a double a take at her clothing choice. She was sure even the assistant who she was convinced was a mute would even look at her twice, but his head didn’t even turn in her direction either, just when she first walked in he looked at her. Ada was sensible enough to know not to blow up at Robert if she was ever to stand a chance at marrying him. He was after all the most sought after bachelor who had millions, if not billions behind his name and Ada wanted to make sure she had that billions connected to her name at any cost possible, so she had to keep her cool. “Okay then.” She plastered a fake smile on her lips. “I’ll just leave this here if you ever change your mind. I know you’re busy and stuff so I’ll just go.” She placed the invitation card on the edge of his desk and sauntered her way out of the office, her tail tucked in between her legs defeated. The card fluttered off the desk with the whoosh of the door closing. Eric stepped forward to pick it up and place it properly on the desk. Before he could take a step further, Robert spoke, “Leave it.” His gruff voice rang out. “Sir?” Eric questioned. Robert looked up at his assistant without saying a word and Eric nodded his head shakily and backed away from the card. Robert went back to working on his reports like the encounter didn’t even happen. Back at the apartment with Jessica. After setting up the apartment so it was a bit homier, Lucy nor I felt like we wanted to be in the kitchen so we both agreed on takeout. We ordered our meals of choice and because Mia was asleep from the long flight that she had, I took it upon myself to order the toddler some nuggets and fries with apple juice. The delivery would take about twenty minutes to arrive so sat down on the couch to have a chit chat. “So, the Smiths are having a grand banquet in a couple of days, Friday to be exact and everybody who’s somebody have been invited.” Lucy kicked off the conversation. “And? Do you have an invite?” I asked. Hesitantly Lucy nodded her head and rifled through her bag to hand me the lavish piece of paper that was the invitation. Lucy’s family was wealthy and they had a couple of hotels and restaurants around the world so of course she would get an invite, and she was required to show up. The Smiths were my family, my father and my now stepmother Nancy, who never deserved the last name in the first place. It was sad that I had to keep the name, but I planned very soon to take my mother’s given name and make it my own. I would also have to go through the tedious procedure of making it Mia’s last name unless we found Mia’s father and then she could get that last name if he accepted that Mia was his. I still could not believe that the only friend I had ever known and trusted had the heart to betray me this way. I would have never believed it if Nancy herself didn’t say that it was a setup from the start. Nancy planned my birthday party, always have since we became friends, invited a bunch of strangers because I was a wallflower and didn’t socialize much, had me and a really cute stranger have too much to drink and sent us on our merry way to go do only the lord knows what. I could still to this day remember the finer details of what he felt like, how gruff his voice sounded and how warm I felt when he cocooned me in his arms. I didn’t remember much the morning after, just that I was alone in my bedroom, as if the activities of the previous night didn’t occur. But Mia was alive and in the flesh proof of the activities we got up to on that faithful night. I wondered briefly if he would be at this fancy gala since he seemed to be a friend of Nancy’s. I could then get the opportunity to speak to him and tell him he has a daughter with me, and hopefully not embarrass myself in the process. “What’s going on in that brain of yours?” Lucy snapped me out of my thoughts. “Just thinking.” I answered vaguely. I didn’t feel like getting my stupid idea shot down by the only person whose opinion mattered to me. I knew in myself that if I said my piece to Lucy, Lucy would no doubt help me to refine the details, but I felt like I wanted to do this one alone. “Nothing major.” I answered. “Jess, I know you like the back of my hand, I know when you’re scheming and right now, you’re definitely scheming. But right now, I won’t push you for information if you don’t want to tell me. I’ll leave it all up to you. But just know, you’re my plus one, no excuses.” Lucy left after saying her little spiel to her apartment that was just a few doors down from mine. Mia was still fast asleep and didn’t seem like she would be waking up anytime soon. I wasn’t feeling tired even though I barely had any sleep prior to my flight and moving stuff around in the apartment. I decided to make myself useful and check my email to see if anything had arrived for me. Upon opening my email I found an email waiting to be opened and read. I clicked the email and began reading with my eyes and then out loud. Thank you for the resume and the interest in applying at our company Ms Smith. We checked your resume and everything looks lovely. We would love to sit down for a formal interview with you on Monday at 8 am. See you then. Brown’s Powerhouse Designs. I couldn’t believe that I had an interview lined up with one of the most prestigious up and coming firms. Just in the last year they won 3 awards for Best Architectural Designs. They are responsible for some of the most complex designs on the buildings around the city, and they are always well praised for their efforts. Working there will be like a dream come through for me, it will boost my resume even more when I add this to it. I started to get jittery and bounced in my chair like an overexcited child on Christmas morning. Just then someone knocked on the apartment door and I wondered if Lucy forgot something. I got up to answer the door and saw the delivery boy with the food that me and Lucy ordered and totally forgot about. I mentally smacked myself in the forehead and scampered to pay the young man his money. I then placed the food in the kitchen and picked up the phone to call Lucy. “Miss me already?” The diva on the other end of the phone giggled. “No, can’t say I do.” I teased. “But you did forget that we ordered food.” “Oh shoot. I’ll be over in a bit.” The girls both hung up and I decided not to wait for Lucy, I grabbed my box of food and started digging in while scrolling through whatever information I could get on Brown’s Powerhouse Design. Lucy walked in a few minutes later, changed out of the clothes that she was wearing previously. She too walked into the kitchen and grabbed her box of food and sat beside me. I decided to share the news with her. “So, I got an email from Brown’s Powerhouse Design saying I have an interview on Monday at 8.” Lucy quickly swallowed her food and squealed lowly so not to wake Mia, who still has not stirred since she was put down. “That’s amazing, that was also really quick. They are the best in the area and I know you’ll get the job.” Both girls giggled and ate while preparing for the upcoming interview.
