The laboratory fell into a heavy silence.
Every eye turned to the security monitor, where Damien Voss stood alone outside the compound. He wore a tailored black suit despite the morning chill, his expression calm, almost welcoming.
"It's time to come home," his voice echoed again through the loudspeaker.
Aria's grip tightened around the silver pendant.
"I'll never go with him."
Ethan stepped beside her.
"And you won't."
Professor Adrian Wolfe shook his head.
"Don't underestimate Damien Voss. He rarely enters the field himself. If he's here, he wants something only Aria can give him."
Noah glanced toward the exits.
"Then we don't let him get close."
---
Outside, Voss slowly walked through the open gate.
Surprisingly, he wasn't surrounded by armed operatives.
He carried no visible weapon.
His confidence alone was unsettling.
Ethan stepped out of the laboratory entrance, closing the distance until only a few meters separated them.
The two men locked eyes.
"So," Voss said with a faint smile, "the legendary Ethan Cross."
"I've been looking forward to meeting you."
"You've caused enough deaths," Ethan replied. "It ends today."
Voss chuckled softly.
"You still believe this is about good versus evil."
"It isn't?"
"No."
"It's about control."
A tense silence followed.
Then Voss glanced past Ethan and looked directly at Aria.
"You deserve the truth."
Aria refused to move.
"I know enough."
"No," Voss replied. "You've only heard one side."
He took another step forward.
Instantly, Ethan blocked his path.
"No closer."
Voss's smile faded.
"So be it."
Without warning, he struck.
No guns.
No knives.
Just a lightning-fast punch aimed at Ethan's jaw.
Ethan slipped the strike and answered with a sharp body blow.
Voss absorbed it, pivoted, and drove an elbow toward Ethan's shoulder.
Ethan blocked, countered with a kick, and forced Voss backward.
The courtyard became their battleground.
Neither man relied on brute strength.
Every movement was controlled, disciplined, and efficient.
Voss fought with the precision of someone trained by elite military instructors.
Ethan matched him blow for blow.
Aria watched in disbelief.
"You said he was just a strategist," she whispered.
Professor Wolfe shook his head.
"Before he built Shadow Protocol... Damien Voss was one of the agency's finest operatives."
The fight intensified.
Voss feinted with his left hand before spinning into a sweeping kick.
Ethan jumped over it and landed a clean punch across Voss's cheek.
For the first time, Voss stumbled.
A thin line of blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
He smiled.
"Excellent."
He wiped the blood away and looked almost pleased.
"You've exceeded my expectations."
Ethan charged again.
The two exchanged another flurry of punches and blocks before Ethan caught Voss's wrist and threw him hard onto the cracked concrete.
Before Ethan could restrain him, Voss rolled away and sprang back to his feet.
Neither man had gained a decisive advantage.
---
Suddenly, a loud alarm echoed across the compound.
Maya, monitoring the perimeter from inside the building, rushed outside.
"Ethan!"
He didn't take his eyes off Voss.
"What is it?"
"More vehicles!"
Everyone turned.
A convoy of black SUVs raced through the forest toward the facility.
"They're almost here," Noah warned.
Voss calmly adjusted his jacket.
"I didn't come alone."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"You planned this from the start."
"Of course."
Voss looked at Aria one last time.
"When you're ready to know who you truly are..."
"...you'll come to me."
He pressed a small device hidden in his watch.
A thick cloud of white smoke erupted around him.
By the time it cleared, he was gone.
Only tire tracks remained where a hidden escape vehicle had sped away.
The convoy was less than a minute from reaching the compound.
Professor Wolfe hurried to a secure cabinet and removed a weathered metal case.
He handed it to Ethan.
"I've protected this for decades."
"What is it?"
"The last complete archive of Project Genesis."
Ethan took the case.
It was surprisingly heavy.
Wolfe looked directly at Aria.
"Everything your parents died to protect is inside."
Before anyone could respond, the sound of engines surrounded the compound.
Dozens of Shadow Protocol operatives poured from the vehicles.
Ethan looked at his team.
"We're leaving. Now."
Noah pointed toward a narrow mountain trail behind the laboratory.
"There's an old escape route."
The group disappeared into the forest just as the first operatives stormed the compound.
Behind them, flames suddenly erupted from the laboratory.
Professor Wolfe stopped in his tracks.
"My research..."
He looked back at the burning building with quiet sorrow.
Then he turned away.
"There are some things worth losing..."
"...if it means the truth survives."
Far behind them, hidden among the smoke and fire, an unseen figure watched the group escape through a pair of binoculars.
The figure lowered them slowly.
Then spoke into a secure radio.
"They have the Genesis Archive."
A voice answered immediately.
"Do not let them reach the mountain."
