Chapter Four: The Devil's Bridge

661 Words
The bridge erupted into a wall of fire. The blast hurled chunks of concrete into the air as Ethan slammed the brakes. The sedan skidded sideways, stopping just meters from the collapsing roadway. Behind them, three black SUVs accelerated. "We're boxed in!" Maya shouted. Ethan's eyes scanned the area in a heartbeat. To the left, a narrow maintenance ramp descended beneath the bridge. "There!" he barked. Maya spun the steering wheel. The sedan plunged down the ramp just as a hail of bullets shattered the rear windshield. Aria ducked, clutching the encrypted flash drive against her chest. The enemy vehicles followed. The chase exploded into the abandoned drainage tunnels beneath the city. Water sprayed from puddles as engines roared through the darkness. One SUV pulled alongside them. An assassin leaned out of the passenger window, aiming an assault rifle. Ethan rolled down his window and fired three controlled shots. The rifleman disappeared back into the vehicle. Seconds later, the SUV slammed into a concrete pillar, erupting into flames. "One down," Maya said. "Two more." The second SUV rammed their rear bumper. The sedan fishtailed violently. "Hold on!" Maya yelled. She yanked the handbrake, spinning the car into a sharp turn. The pursuing SUV failed to react in time and crashed through a steel guardrail, plunging into the flooded canal below. Only one remained. Its driver showed no hesitation. Instead of slowing, the final SUV accelerated straight toward them. "He's trying to kill us all," Aria whispered. Ethan reloaded his pistol. "No." His expression hardened. "He's trying to destroy the drive." The enemy vehicle struck them broadside. Metal screamed against metal. The sedan rolled once before crashing onto its wheels. Smoke poured from the engine. "We're out!" Ethan ordered. The three of them scrambled from the wreck just as the sedan burst into flames. The remaining assassins emerged from their SUV, advancing with military precision. There were eight of them. Night-vision goggles. Body armor. Silenced weapons. Not ordinary mercenaries. Professionals. Ethan stepped in front of Aria. "Maya, get her out of here." "What about you?" "I'll buy you time." Without waiting for an answer, he charged forward. The first attacker fired. Ethan rolled beneath the burst, disarmed him, and used the rifle against two more advancing operatives. Maya covered him with accurate shots from behind a concrete support, forcing the remaining assassins into cover. Aria stood frozen. She had never seen violence this close. Never watched a single man fight with such calculated precision. Yet even Ethan couldn't stop every bullet. A shot rang out. He staggered. Blood spread across his left shoulder. "Ethan!" Aria cried. "I'm fine," he gritted through clenched teeth. Another team of enemies appeared at the tunnel entrance. "We have to move!" Maya shouted. Aria rushed to Ethan's side, wrapping his arm over her shoulder despite the danger. Together they escaped through a narrow maintenance passage hidden behind rusted steel doors. The gunfire faded behind them. For the moment, they had survived. --- Hours later, they reached an abandoned medical clinic on the outskirts of the city. The building had long been forgotten, making it the perfect temporary refuge. Maya locked every entrance. Aria cleaned Ethan's wound with practiced hands. "You've done this before?" Ethan asked. "My father was an emergency physician," she replied softly. "He taught me enough to save a life." Their eyes met briefly. For the first time since the nightmare began, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn't awkward. It was comforting. Then Ethan noticed something tucked inside the flash drive's protective case. A tiny folded piece of paper. Aria frowned. "I've never seen that." Ethan unfolded it carefully. Inside was a single handwritten message: The key is not the file... The key is the woman. Before anyone could make sense of the warning, the lights inside the clinic flickered. Outside, the sound of helicopter blades thundered across the night sky. Powerful searchlights swept over the building. Shadow Protocol had found them once again.
