Chapter 3 – Chains of Fate

348 Words
The rain hadn’t stopped in three days. Storm clouds smothered the moon, as though the heavens themselves were hiding from what was to come. Elara sat by her window, the fire in her chamber burning low, a forgotten book in her lap. She’d dismissed her ladies hours ago, unable to bear their constant questions — Will you go? Will the king refuse? Will Kael Thorn bring war? The truth was, the questions gnawed at her just as much. She traced the rim of her wine cup, letting her thoughts wander where they shouldn’t. She had never seen the Warlord in person, but the stories were impossible to ignore. They painted him as a man both brutal and breathtaking — a conqueror whose beauty was sharpened by cruelty, whose voice could charm while his hands destroyed. Some said he had the blood of shadows in him, a gift from the ancient gods who once ruled these lands. Others whispered he could slip into dreams, weaving desire and fear into his victim’s mind until they broke. Elara had scoffed at such tales before. Now, she wasn’t so sure. The fire crackled softly. She sipped her wine. And then— A voice. Deep, low, curling around her name like smoke. Elara. The cup slipped from her fingers, spilling dark red across the rug. Her eyes darted to the door — it was locked. The room was empty. Yet she felt it: a presence, heavy and watchful, pressing against her mind. “You’re not real,” she whispered. Not yet, the voice murmured, a faint edge of amusement in the words. But you will know me soon. Heat bloomed low in her belly, alien and unwelcome. Her fingers trembled as the sensation lingered — not fear, but something dangerously close to anticipation. Then, as suddenly as it had come, the presence withdrew. The fire snapped, a log collapsing into embers. She was alone again. But Elara knew, with bone-deep certainty, that Kael Thorn had just laid his first chain on her — invisible, unbreakable, and pulling tighter with every breath she took.
