Chapter One
Emily.
I stared into empty space... completely zoned out from this world. As time progressed, I hoped it would freeze a bit so I could stay a bit longer with these children. Far away from my reality.
I let out a heavy sigh and picked up the attendance sheet on the desk, glanced through it a while and carefully wrote down the names of the children present in class.
The ticking sound of the clock behind me was the only sound in the classroom aside the friction between the pen in my hand and the book on my desk.
I lifted my eyes and a smile of satisfaction curled up on the corner of my lips as I watched the kids focus on their work.
"Well..." I interrupted. "There goes the bell! Time to pack up!" I announced and they cheered. I wish I was this excited to go back home..
Each parent came looking for their kids and in no time, the class was almost empty.
"Goodbye miss Emily!" Loud voices of the children echoed repeatedly as they waltzed out of my class in the company of their parents. I maintained a warm smile, waving back at them until each one was completely out of sight.
A sigh of relief escaped my slightly parted lips as I tucked my loose strands of hair behind my ear.
School dismissed thirty minutes ago and by now every child should have been picked up by their guardian.
But Lily Black sat in the corner, her fingers tightened around the edge of her sleeve and her eyes barley able to stay open. I quickly packed up my bag, and crouched in front of her seat
"Hey little pumpkin.." I whispered and grazed my fingers on her ear, tucking her ruffled hair gently behind it. "Is everything okay?"
She turned to look at me with saddening eyes and I didn't say anything further. "Let's go wait for mummy and daddy outside.." I tried to put up a smile on my face just so Lily can feel less stressed.
We stood by the gate... cars drove in and out of the school, but none of them came for Lily. "They're not coming today again are they?" Lily blurted and wiped her face.
"Maybe we should give them a little more time" I reassured even though a bigger part of me knew they weren't coming.
An hour quickly swept by and there was still no sign of either of her parents. I was growing impatient, but this wasn't the first time Mr and Mrs Black just happened to leave their daughter at school. I peeked at my wristwatch again as the wind grew even harsher and my brows furrowed in annoyance.
"It's about to rain.." I whispered under my breath.
Lily tugged at the hem of my blouse and I looked down at her weary eyes. She glanced at the gate, and then slowly rolled her eyes back to my face. Her lips quivered slightly from the cold weather and her face pale.
"Will you take me home with you?" The words barely escaping her lips in nothing louder than a breath.
I smiled softly, took a good look at the time and exhaled heavily. "I can't take you home with me Lily..." I muttered back and ran my fingers through her hair to calm her down.
"But I can take you home since your parents are running a bit late..." her eyes lit up and I smiled. This wasn't the first time I was taking her home, so I booked an Uber and in no time we were on our way.
Lily was quiet the entire drive. Her eyes were glued to the road and her expression was cold and sour.
"I'll need to have a word with either Mr Lucas or his wife about leaving their daughter in school, long after closing hours..." I thought to myself as we pulled over at their gate.
Lily and I walked down the long driveway until we got to the front door and I knocked. Once, twice.... and then one more time. But there wasn't any response. There were cars in the garage and even though I had no idea whose cars they were, it was more than obvious that someone was home.
"Do you think anyone is home?" I probed as I unstrapped the backpack from Lily's back just incase it was making her uncomfortable. She shrugged her shoulders and sat on the porch. "My mother should be home..." her tiny voice responded without a care in the world.
"Wait right here, let me see if anyone is home.." I ordered as I walked over to the window to see if there was anyone inside at all. As I peered through the parted curtains, I waited for my eyes to adjust to the dimly lit room and my heart sank into my stomach. I let out a very audible gasp and immediately held my hand over my mouth to muffle the sound.
My eyes stung as it welled up with tears. I felt my heart shattering into a million pieces right inside my chest. I almost passed out.
The sight before me made my skin crawl and my blood boiled like am erupting volcano.
I fell back, my fingertips digging deep into my clutched purse as I tried to digest what I just witnessed. Beads of sweat formed on my forehead and I just wanted the earth to open up and swallow me.
My vision blurred and I managed to maintain my stance as I walked back to the door and lifted my hand to knock. This time, louder and harder than before. My eyes burned as tears welled up in my eyes and I heard shuffles from the other side of the door.
"Hey my darling!" Lily's mother called out as she held the door open and wrapped Lily in her slender arms. I glanced at the ornaments on her body as they adorned her skin and my head spun in circles.
"How can I thank you for bringing her home?" Her raspy voice came and she slowly locked eyes with mine. I looked over her shoulder and there he was... Jack, my husband. Standing at the far end of the room with his shirt buttoned half-way.
He turned his eyes away from mine and I returned Sophie's question with a smile and dead silence. The tears in my eyes begged to be let loose but I gritted my teeth and walked away.
"Thank you miss Emily!" Lily called out as I left but I couldn't even turn around to wave at the sweet little angel, because that would mean she'd be forced to see the sadness in my eyes.
I dragged my heavy legs down the streets and my hands shivered, but not from the harsh wind, nor the rain that watered down my tears.... I shivered from the mere thoughts of how much I was drowning in this so-called marriage.
Jack and I have been married for years and I was blinded by the veil of sweetness he had once wore. Everything went south all of a sudden, from Jack keeping late nights, to lying about even the littlest thing.
My lips trembled as I cried freely in the rain. Nobody noticed... nobody asked me any questions and I was somewhat grateful for that. I eventually got home and fell to the floor, still completely soaked.
Jack did not just cheat on me.. he didn't feel any atom of remorse after knowing that I was aware of the disgusting thing he did. He just stood there, staring at me with no expression on his face. And Sophie.... how much of a shameless mother she was to have left her child alone at school while she cheated on her husband with a married man!
I was visibly shaken and I could barely even pull myself together. I remained on the bare floor, wondering where and how I must have done wrong to Jack or why he chose to treat me in the most condescending manner ever.
As the skies rumbled with resounding thunders, I held my stomach and let out a horrifying scream... releasing the pressure in my chest but I was done crying. I had no more tears to shed.
I didn't know what to do with my broken pieces, neither did I know where to go from here. But one thing was certain– I was getting a divorce.
