Chapter Four

Emily Words weren't enough to describe how I felt after Mr. Black spewed those words effortlessly. It just looked like he has given this years worth of thought before bringing it to my knowledge. I stared at the piece of paper and grazed my fingers over it. This mere sheet could change my life for the better. But then what happens to his wife Sophie? How would she feel if her husband brought another woman into her home? But at the same time, she didn't think of that when she cheated on her husband with my husband... I opened my mouth to speak but choked on my words. My head was spamming different thoughts, and I immediately shut my eyes like it would stop my head from exploding. "So..." Mr. Black muttered, breaking the fragile silence. "What do you say?" "This is real.." I muttered under my breath. "This could be my only way of escaping this blood thirsty husband of mine.." I took a deep breath and finally lifted my eyes to meet his firm gaze. The way he looked at me, I couldn't tell what emotions were harboring in his mind at the moment. "If you've known about your wife's affair with my husband, why haven't you filed for a divorce yet?" I asked and he exhaled softly as his arms crossed firmly over his chest. "And why do you want to help me now?" Mr. Black just stared at me blankly. His eyes danced around my face for a while and then his lips parted for him to speak. "I would have endured for the sake of our daughter.. but lately I've noticed that something is going on with Lily and I know that Sophie is far from being a good mother. Not anymore..." he unfolded his arms and leaned closer. I fell back on the chair as I immediately recalled Lily flinching a lot during class. One time her seat mate tried taking something off of her hair and Lily immediately pulled back like she was trying to avoid being hit. It then made sense to me now that Mr. Black explained things to me. I lowered my head and buried my face in my palms. This was getting even more complicated than it was supposed to. At first I didn't want to replace Lily's mother, but all I could think of at the moment was the horrible things she must have been putting the little girl through to make her flinch at her own playmates. "And you have to admit–" Mr. Black started and I lifted my face from my sweat-soaked palms "–the more time you spend with Jack, the more you increase your chances of losing your life before even living it." His words struck like a bullet... but they only hurt that bad because he was speaking the truth about Jack and I. I had nothing to loose here, it's not like Jack and I have a child together anyways... "So what do you say?" He asked and I shut my eyes for a few seconds before speaking. "Mr. Black I–" "–Lucas please. You sound like one of my employees" he cut in and I nodded. "Mr. Lucas I honestly appreciate your concern for my wellbeing and I also understand why you want Lily to have a mother who would care for her the way she deserves... but if I'm being honest, I don't think I can cope with getting involved with the complexities of your class.." I said and he lifted his brows. "My class? What does that even mean?" "I mean your societal status. You wealthy people always have something stuck to your skin and that's I don't think I can get involved in.." I explained further. "Oh.. I see" he muttered and I felt bad all of a sudden. . "I love Lily like my own, just the same way I love every child in my class. And if the opportunity comes for me to help them out of trouble, I will do it with all my heart. But I'm going to need time to really think this through before I give you my word..." my voice stayed firm as I locked eyes with him and didn't look away until my phone beeped. A soft gasp escaped my lips as I checked the time and saw it was already getting really late. It was almost time for dinner. Without a word, I grabbed my purse and stood to my feet. "I'll be on my way now, but I will take my time and think about your proposal.. please take care of Lily. She doesn't just need a mother, you also have to be there for her, now more than ever. Goodbye, Mr. Lucas.." I bowed slightly and left. He didn't say anything in response and just pulled the contract back into it's envelope. I could feel his eyes on me even after I walked away. As I walked out of the café, I didn't know if I was on the right track. But an offer like that was always too good to be true. I wanted to leave my marriage as soon as possible... but what if I was running into a more dangerous union by signing that contract? These thoughts swirled around in my mind as I boarded a cab home. "I'll fight my way out of this sham before Jack kills me." I reassured myself. In less than ten minutes, the cab pulled over in front of our gate, and Jack's car was already parked in the driveway. I mustered up the courage, took a deep breath and pushed the front door open. "And where the hell are you coming from?" His voice echoed through the dark room. I swallowed hard and held on tightly to the strap of my bag. "Good evening Jack.." I stuttered, ignoring his question. "Emily where have you been?" He shot at me and before I could think, Jack lurked behind me like the devil. His hot breath on my nape sent chills down my spine. I turned to look at him but his eyes held nothing but hatred as they stared down at me. I couldn't recognize the man I married anymore. Tears welled up in my eyes but I bit my lower lip and maintained eye contact with him.
