Where it all began
—
Alice laid on the floor lifeless, no single muscle in her body could move. With each passing second her heart beat grew weaker increasing the risk of death, her pulse kept fading that if any one could check for it, they would think she’s dead.
Mr. Jones was the one who found her, once he caught a sight of her on the floor motionless, he hurried over dropping all the files he had in hand.
He brought his fingers to her neck trying to find a pulse, it was still there but very weak, that was enough motivation to try and save her. He carried her in his arms rushing them to the general nurses office.
He kicked the door open, nurse Rose and Fredrik were in the room. “Don’t just stand there, help me save her fools!” Mr. Jones shouted, Fredrik immediately jumped off the chair he sat on and created space for her to be laid down. Nurse Rose ran across the room trying to find any milk or medicine that would help pump her or bring her pulse back at full speed.
Rose returned with a bottle of water and the other had milk. Mr. Jones started applying pressure to her stomach but Alice didn’t choke out anything, everyone in the room was on edge.
Mr. Jones grabbed the milk, once he opened her mouth he poured the milk into her mouth, he set the bottle aside then started to apply pressure again but there was nothing.
Fredrik ran his fingers through his hair in panic, he took one good at the lifeless girl. “Let’s bring her to the hospital, they have a better chance at saving her.” Rose shook her head in agreement but Mr. Jones disagreed.
“We have to stabilize her before we take her anywhere, she will die before we get there.” he applied pressure once more with all his strength, his colleagues looked at him with empathy, he was trying to fight a losing battle.
He growled in frustration but his hands never stopped, not once he applied more pressure. “Wake up Alice, don’t you want to see Sam huh? You know she will be really disappointed if you leave without marrying her.” nothing changed, tears rolled down his left eyes, watching Alice walk away was so painful. Alice was like a niece to him, regret guilt flooded his mind as he pressed on her stomach over and over.
He shouldn’t have been weak to stand up to Catherine, he should have protected her and everyone else all this was wrong, it all lead them to the same path, death.
“Alice!” he cried out as he applied pressure for the last time, she immediately started coughing the milk out and everything, everyone in the room wore a relieved face mostly Mr. Jones. Alice still had her eyes closed and still laid on her back, she couldn’t move a muscle, He got over to her side helping her sleep on her side, she was too weak to do anything.
He stroked her head assuring her it would be alright, and from today he would be more of a man. Even though Alice couldn’t speak, she was excited and also disappointed she lived.
He turned to face the two colleagues, “Call her family and get the car ready.” Fredrik nodded before he left the room, and Rose knelt down beside him trying to feel her pulse, it was there but very weak.
Once they arrived at the hospital, the nurses took Alice straight for testing and Mr. Jones waited out till her family could arrive.
Avery and Mercy came rushing in still in the clothes from earlier, Jones gestured for them to come over to him, he would explain everything that happened.
“What happened to my child?” Avery asked as she sat beside him, the panic on her face wasn’t masked at all. “She tried to kill herself.” once her ears heard what he had said, she got up from her chair, Alice couldn’t be doing this again she couldn’t put herself through it again.
“Where is she, I need to see her.” she said when she stopped pacing up and down, Jones tired to reason with her to take it easy, Alice was out of harm’s wat after all. Avery couldn’t wait, her child almost killed herself again and it was her fault once again, she had to see Alice even is Alice didn’t want to see her.
Mercy placed her hand over Avery’s leg, “Mum, calm down.” she squeezed it lightly, Avery looked at her with a sad smile, she couldn’t calm down while her last daughter was in there being tested.
After good twenty minutes, a doctor appeared to them, Alice was sound asleep and okay as well as it was safe to go see her but when she would wake up was not known. They parted ways as the two went to her room, they would wait till she woke up.
Once Alice opened her eyes a painful ray of light blinded her but she quickly got her sight back, she brought her eyes to her hand, once she saw who was holding on to her she slipped her hand out of her mother’s grip.
Avery looked at Alice with tears in her eyes, Alice looked away. Avery knew she deserved that but it still hurt like a b***h, “How are you feeling love, you got us worried.” Her voice was raspy from a the crying.
Alice cleared her throat, it was extremely dry and very sore like the rest of her body. “This is where it all began remember.” she spoke completely ignoring the questions her mum asked, Avery looked at her child clueless, she didn’t know what to say.
Alice now turned to look at her mother, “This is where you died to me Avery, so please leave, I’m alive as you can see.” she didn’t even give her mother a chance, she laid on her back facing the other way. Avery tried to touch her but she moved away from her touch, that’s the moment Avery knew she had lost so much.
She got up without any other words being spoke, before she existed the room she gave Alice one last look and mouthed a sorry.
When Alice heard the door close, she looked over and her mother was gone, her eyes became burly. Tears rolled down her face, but yet no words or sound came out of her mouth.
