PROLOGUE A BEDROOM, about 10.00 pm, the room is filled with light from a fluorescent lamp hanging from a white ceiling board. A bed; neatly covered with a duvet, a fitted wardrobe; one door open so that the clothes are seen hanged and a drawer with a vase of flowers on the top, takes up most space of the room. In a mirror on a dressing table, there are images of a lady, sitting on a stool and a gentleman hugging from the behind. Both are in pyjamas.
Richard: (His fingers caressing her back) Dona, you’re my rib. I love you my sugar
Dona: Thank you my sweets. My world is all about you. I love you too, Rich.
Richard: (Looking at her face from the mirror) If only your lips were lollipop, by now I would own a candy shop
Dona: (Smiling broadly) simply I can’t do without you. You’re everything I live for.
Richard: You know what? I’ve got a surprise for you.
Dona: Oho,really? I can’t wait to see.
Richard: (Going towards wardrobe) I bet you must enjoy it.
Dona: You’re now delaying, babe.
Richard: (Takes acoustic guitar from the wardrobe) I want to sing for you
Dona: Oh my God!
Richard: Yeah. (Switches off the fluorescent lamb for the room to remain in a faint glimmer from a lampshade on the nightstand)
Dona: (Excitedly) I didn’t expect that on my way, Richard.
Richard: (Starts to play the guitar, then stops) will you be my valentine?
Dona: Call me your valentine until forever comes
Richard: (Resumes playing then starts to sing)
In the world you’re the best
Beautiful queen beyond the rest
Your smile and walk pass the test
In a million you stand the greatest
Will you be my valentine?
In a dark night you’re the moon
Forever I’ll play your desired tune
Close to you as a shadow at noon
With me you’re in a safe cocoon
Will you be my valentine?
My passion for you is blinding
Promise to love without ending
For you I’ll leave everything pending
A straight life without bending
Will you be my valentine?
Dona: (Applauding then proceeds to hug him. Almost in a whisper tone) Honey, I’ll be your valentine
Richard: Thank you for being my valentine
Dona: You’ve really amazed me.
Richard: That’s what a queen like you deserves. Anything for you
Dona: I’ve got a present for you
Richard: Are you sure, Dona?
Dona: (Reaching her hand bag then removes an energy drink) This is the best a man can get. Drink it whenever you miss me.
Richard: (Receives and puts it on the dressing table) missing is still loving, my valentine. But I won’t drink it now because I don’t miss you.
Dona: Oo-er,really?
Richard: Sure. Instead I’ll drink you in person
Dona: (Smiles.) What do you mean, Hun?
Richard: This is what I mean.
[He lifts her up, whirls her and then lands her on the bed. Lampshade subsequently goes off]
ACT ONE Scene One
A FRONT ROOM, a modern room with furnishings of sofa chairs made from leather materials surrounding a coffee table, a wall unit, in it a large screen television, an alcohol cabinet, a book shelf and many others. On the wall hang picture portraits and electric lamps. Though it is twilight, the extra-large windows still allow light into the room because heavy curtains are loosely closed and so are the windows. On the stairs to up rooms, sits a lady, 22 in a sleeveless dress. Her light complexion on the face looks disturbed. Suddenly, a woman, about 40, but looks like in her twenties, likely to be the lady’s mother comes down the stairs. She gets upset as she looks around the room.
Maggie: (A bit of a shout) Dona, look at yourself! What is the time? (Looking the wall clock)
Dona: For heaven’s sake, I hate shouts
Maggie: Why haven’t you closed the windows? (No reply) Am I talking to myself?
Dona: Mom, will you do me a favour? Please leave me alone. I really beg you
Maggie: You look pathetic. I hate seeing you in this state.
Dona: If I were you, I’d mind my own business
Maggie: And exactly that’s what I am doing. Are you forgetting you’re my only child, my main business in this world?
Dona: (Disgustedly) I need peace please
Maggie: Ho-hum! Dona my daughter (proceeds to close the windows. Meanwhile, a strange number rings on Dona’s phone on the coffee table. Dona slowly stands up, walking towards the phone)
Dona: (Reluctantly) Hello! Who is this?
Phone: Hello! This is southern county hospital and I’m Dr. Druke Will, (worried tone) am I speaking to valentine?
Dona: (Interestingly.)Actually am not valentine but maybe there’s someone who calls me that
Phone: Do you know a guy by the name Richard Steve?
Dona: (Eagerly) yeah! What’s the matter?
Phone: (A finality tone) If you don’t mind come to the hospital right now (the phone hangs)
Dona: Hello! Hello! (No reply. She hurriedly dials the phone but it is all in vain. She is more depressed. Towards Maggie) Mom, I’m driving to the hospital
Maggie: (Worriedly.) What is it honey?
Dona: (avoiding the question deliberately.)Would you mind if I have your car keys?
Maggie: Okay dear. You can have it but what takes you to the hospital at this hour?
Dona: I’ll explain later mom
Maggie: But dear (reaching her shoulders.)Remember to be yourself. Don’t forget I’m making your favourite meal for dinner. Don’t disappoint me. Huh?
Dona: (absent mindedly) Alright mama. (Goes towards the main door after picking the car keys from the wall unit and a jacket on the seat then bangs the door after her)
Maggie: (Sighs) Oh God! Help her wherever she goes (looking at the door as if she wants to follow her but resumes closing the windows murmuring words that are not clear. She starts moving towards the kitchen but doorbell rings) Come in please (door opens then enters a lady almost the same age as Dona)
Pinky: (Shaking.)Where is Dona? (Hastily) Is she in?
Maggie: What the hell is going on? (Almost loosing herself) Pinky you’re Dona’s friend. Tell me something
Pinky: (Counting the words.) Where – is-Dona?
Maggie: (Reluctantly) she drove out moments ago claiming she’s going to the hospital (calmly) will you mind letting me know what’s going on?
Pinky: Let me catch up with her. We will see you later
Maggie: Aargh- get serious and talk to me
Pinky: (turning ready to leave) Later. I need to find her first. I think it’s very urgent (before making a step, Maggie jumps first to the door blocking her way)
Maggie: Pinky! What’s going on?
Pinky: It’s Richard!
Maggie: Richard?!
[Maggie is shocked, letting Pinky way out without noticing. She walks slowly and sits on the couch]
Scene two
SOUTHERN COUNTY HOSPITAL, it’s almost dark but not yet. The street lights are on but still not of use. Several vehicles move out of the parking as others park. There is usual movement of people; both patients and doctors, in the white courts, inside and outside the hospital building. From a distance, a siren of ambulance is heard and this grows closer and closer. After a while, a guard quickly opens the gate. Immediately enters the ambulance in full lights, its siren shrilling loudly. Directly it moves and stops at building entrance indicated ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY. From the ambulance, nurses with stretches carrying the patient quickly dash into hospital. Last out of the ambulance, is a lady, 24 in a police uniform. Although it seems tough time to most people around, her face has the smile.
Laura: (To one of the nurses.) Where do I report the case? I’m the police in charge
Nurse: Use that corridor, direct to the fourth door with a sticker DR WILL
Laura: Thank you (walking directly as directed and politely knocks at the door then enters)
Dr. Will: Come in officer (pointing the seat in front of him) please take a seat.
Laura: (Sitting.)My name is Laura, an officer in charge of the case that called your ambulance for an emergency a while ago.
Dr Will: Oh sure! I’m Dr. Druke Will. The ambulance is already back and I’m certain that the nurses are handling the situation. (Removing his spectacles) anyway what is the matter?
Laura: (Giving Dr. Will a note and half-filled bottle of a drink) I think it is a suicide attempt- a fact that puts your client under arrest (collecting herself properly on the seat). The note and the bottle were found in his house during the time of rescue
Dr. Will: (Putting on his spectacles and reads the note.)So he’s a victim of love
Laura: Probably. I’d like if further tests done to that drink.
Dr. Will: Do you think that’s necessary?
Laura: Yeah, it will be useful in investigation process
Dr. Will: Where are his particulars? Do you have any details about him?
Laura: Sure (removing a wallet from her side pocket and subsequently, an identity card) His name is Rich… (Dr. Will waves his hand to interrupt her)
Dr. Will: Let me have his details filed (clicking the computer’s mouse severally) His name is…
Laura: Richard Steve
Dr. Will: Mmmh… from?
Laura: Central district
Dr. Will: So you say the client is under arrest for attempting to commit suicide (stops to type then looks at Laura) but this will be only true after the result of toxicology is out
Laura: Sure Dr. Will. That’s one of the main reasons why the client is in your facility.
Dr Will: Let me confirm what’s going on (taking his phone then dials) please hand over the toxicology testing and result form to my office as soon as possible(he’s brief to the call)
Laura: (Wondering.)So that test doesn’t take that long?
Dr Will: It depends. Do you know his people?
Laura: From his phone, here are the contacts he contacted frequently before committing the crime.
Dr. Will: Who are they?
Laura: (Reading from the phone) Valentine and Pinky.
Dr. Will: What are their contacts numbers? (Laura reads the contact numbers as Dr Will jots them on a paper) I think I should inform them
Laura: You need to be cautious. This is a court case, be prudent and selective on your words, if Imay advise.
Dr. Will: Oh sugar! I detest clients whose cases end in the court of law. Once I had… (Interrupts ringing phone) here’s a call from the nurse
Phone: The result might delay
Dr Will: Why?
Phone: The condition is very critical. If you get time come please (it hangs)
Dr. Will: (Worriedly.)Your criminal isn’t in a stable condition. There’s a need for me to attend to him
Laura: (Standing.) Let me too attend to other duties (putting a business card on the table) call me if any need arises (leaves)
Dr Will: (Reads the card briefly and puts it on the table.)See you around later.
[Dr. Will takes the phone and calls valentine and Pinky respectively]
Scene three
[DR. WILL’S OFFICE, it is about an hour later. Him inside is looking worried about something not clear on his face. He is entering information into the computer from a file. This continues for a while. Suddenly, the door opens without a knock, and then enters Dona.]
Dr. Will: (Astonished.)You’ve really scared the hell out of me (pointing at a chair where Laura had sat) have a seat madam
Dona: (Sitting down) Forgive my stupidity I didn’t even knock
Dr Will: It’s okay. How can I help you?
Dona: I’m Dona Soni. You called an hour ago asking me to come. You talked of Richard. Where is he?
Dr. Will: (Ignoring the question.)So are you related to Maggie Soni, the County Executive advisor?
Laura: Yes, I’m the daughter
Dr. Will: Alright I can see. But you’ve not been around for quite some time. Huh?
Dona: Doctor is there something you’re not telling. Something like why did you call me here?
Dr. Will: I called to inform you about Richard Steve…
Dona: (impatiently.)Where is he? Can I see him please?
Dr. Will: Be easy madam. Who is he to you?
Dona: Richard is my fiancé. Is something the matter with him?
Dr. Will: Nothing serious. I just wanted to know what actually happened between you people
Dona: I hate this type of jokes please. How on earth do you call me to the hospital to ask me about my relationship with my fiancé? Jeez! In a hospital! (Stands up ready to leave) I see you have nothing important.
Dr.Will: (Pointing the chair) Please resume your seat
Dona: (Sitting down). Be quick if you’ve something else. I don’t have the whole day
Dr. Will: (Taking a file from the closet) I am so sorry madam. You are too young to lose people you care about (opening the file, one page after another) I am really sorry.
Dona: (Shocked). Are you out of your mind, doctor? Wait who are you talking about?
Dr. Will: Richard Steve
Dona: (In a somber tone) Please don’t tell me Rich is dead. Be sure you’re kidding me.
Dr. Will: Take it easy (handing her the file) Richard didn’t die a usual way. He committed suicide in his house and here is a suicide note he left (giving her the note) I guess it is addressed to you
Dona: (Reading the note and promptly burst into tears) can I view his body, then?
Dr. Will: (Fumbling on what to say) I’m sorry you can’t view the body
Dona: Doctor, why?
Dr. Will: I’m following the orders
Dona: (Getting mad.) What orders? You just can’t stop me from viewing my boyfriend’s body
Dr. Will: He wasn’t your boyfriend. You had broken up with him
Dona: (Standing then leans on the table with both hands facing Dr. Will like a predator to a prey.) What the hell are you talking about?
Dr. Will: (intending to hurt). The reason why he killed himself was because you left him. You made him hate life. You’re responsible for his death and according to the orders you’re not even supposed to… (Door opens. Pinky gets in hurriedly and then stops abruptly. She looks at Dr. Will then at Dona repeatedly. Obviously she is confused)
Dona: Damn it! (Assuming the presence of Pinky, she walks out)
Pinky: What’s going on?
Dr. Will: (Annoyed.) Who are you?
Pinky: I’m Pinky, you called me a while ago about Richard’s case. (Pointing the door) What’s the problem with her?
Dr. Will: You could have asked her. (Walking outside the office)
Pinky: (Alone in the room, she reads the file on the table) Richard is dead! Oh my God! He’s dead
[She observes the suicide note and then Laura’s business card. Moves backward slowly, open the door then leaves]
Scene four
[MISSION HILLS PARK, It is 8.00 a.m. The park is covered green with flowering trees and grass all over. A number of people are seen around with kids playing in children’s court. There are a handful of cars parked along the street into the park. A calm atmosphere with everyone seems busy with their own activities. On a bench, sits Dr. Will reading an article in a daily paper head YOUTH COMMITS SUICIDE OVER A LOVER. He looks at his wrist watch severally. Shortly arrives Maggie, in a black coat, a dark shade and a cowboy hat]
Dr. Will: (Extending arms to her) Morning madam
Maggie: Morning Dr. Will. For once I commend you for the good job you’re doing
Dr. Will: A friend in need is a friend in deed. I’m certain it will come a day that you’ll also help me a valuable from the government. Who doesn’t know how you’re influential in the government? So to say, no one sees the governor without your consent
Maggie: (Smiling) I’ll never forsake you. In case of anything I must come for your rescue, doctor (picking the daily paper and reads it for a while)
Dr. Will: Please do have a seat
Maggie: (Sitting). So this i***t is dead? (Almost to herself) He really frustrated my daughter
Dr. Will: The nurses almost helped him out, I then scared them on the complication of the cases on attempted suicide. Besides, the hospital pharmacy had no drugs to save him
Maggie: Every disadvantage has an advantage; lack of drugs became our advantage. But don’t mind I will ensure the county awards you the tender of supplying the drugs in all county hospitals. What about the nurses, any issue?
Dr. Will: Thank you Mama County for the offer. Nurses should not bother you. They are under my control
Maggie: Alright. You know I had to call you that urgently, before Dona could reach your facility. When you called her, thank God we were both in the house
Dr. Will: In fact I was wondering how you came to know Richard was in our facility
Maggie: I expected that but I didn’t know the exact time.
Dr. Will: Wait. I don’t understand. How did you expect him to commit suicide? I mean how?
Maggie: Don’t be inquisitive. I’m a smart lady anyway why do you ask?
Dr. Will: Police in charge wanted him jailed for attempting to commit suicide (correcting himself) I mean your game was so smart that even the police noted it a suicide case
Maggie: So?
Dr. Will: Now there’s no case. He’s dead and so the file is also closed. I met press that very time and reported that the toxic he used was highly poisonous to save his life. Chapter ended
Maggie: Who are these police in charge? There’s need to stop further investigation. What do you think?
Dr Will: Don’t worry madam. Police have got nothing to do with a death related to suicide. As I said chapter is closed to mean no further investigation will be done
Maggie: Sure. I trust what you’re telling me (keeping quite abruptly) she has low moods and talks less. I mean Dona. She’s even mad at her friends
Dr. Will: That shows how much he loved the boy. For that reason, there’s a need you find her a psychotherapist. She needs a proper counseling because she feels she’s the cause of Richard’s death
Maggie: (Nodding) Dona must have been obsessed with the boy. I understand they started dating four years ago while in the campus
Dr. Will: With time, she’ll accept and move on. Just take a close look at her. Don’t give her a room to be alone for long. Does she know you’re against the relationship?
Maggie: No! Never! I ever pretend I don’t interfere with choices of her life. I’m sure she knows I have no hand to death of Richard. Don’t you think I stand better chance to console her?
Dr. Will: Perhaps you do
Maggie: I don’t really like seeing my daughter in that condition
Dr. Will: It’s a common thing when you lose the one you love
Maggie: Is there any way you can help?
Dr. Will: The only way I can help is through sending you a psychotherapist
Maggie: Alright, please do that (standing up) I should be going back to her. They might visit again anytime soon (imitating) ‘there is no way that doctor is going to deny us chance to view his body’ I heard Pinky saying so.
Dr. Will: Are you sure?
Maggie: I like the way you treated the girls (signals him it’s time to leave) ensure you reinforce them negatively
Dr. Will: (Both walking towards the exit of the park)I wonder if they will come again. It will be wise if you give her today’s paper to read. But if she keeps insisting on coming, let her have her way
Maggie: No wonder you’re a doctor (slapping his shoulder) you’re a real guru
[They proceed to a white sports car parked outside the park. Maggie opens the back door and then brings out a briefcase. She hands it to him, then drives away]
ACT TWO Scene one
CLUB CHANGERS, it is 10:00 p.m. everyone is so excited to get inside. Outside people are queuing to get in with some dancing. Two steps inside, it is a magical world of disco lights, laser beams and the irreplaceable glow of light shining on the people. The DJ seems to be watching people dancing around as if something has possessed their bodies. At the counter, it is extremely frantic, with people getting their favourite drinks. As the big extractors; loosely hanging from the roof, blow as hard as possible to cool down the sweaty bodies. Different types of perfumes from ladies give the room its smell. At a corner, on a couch sits two young men, almost the same age. Though music is loud, they communicate well with one another. On their table, there’s a variety of hard drinks.
Sam: (Browsing internet from his phone) Damn it! Jeff, did you see the story trending; about a guy who committed suicide?
Jeff: Yap! The story is floating around. He took out his life just for a woman. I wonder what love is. May I intrude into your affairs?
Sam: No problem
Jeff: Can you die for Pinky?
Sam: Don’t be ridiculous I can’t kill myself for a woman. I better go to jail by ensuring she’s in grave. Dude, stop it. Pinky has not accepted my proposal I’m just trying
Jeff: Sam, I’m sure you can’t miss her. You’re always on it. I can remember that day…
Sam: (Interrupting). What a coincidence! Here’s a text from Pinky. Guess what? (Sips from his glass)
Jeff: (Impatiently.) What’s it, dude?
Sam: She is coming with another chic. It’s your lucky day. That goes to you without any question
Jeff: (Excitedly.) Surely, every dog has its day
Sam: It is called killing two birds with one stone (suddenly, Laura; dressed elegantly, approaches their table. She is a bit drunk. As she staggers, she knocks down a bottle of whisky accidentally)
Laura: (Slurred speech.) Sorry gentlemen. Let me double the bottle of your whisky. (Looking at them, one after another) is it okay with you?
Jeff: What a surprise! (Calls an attendant) waiter!
Sam: (Stopping him) Jeff, it’s alright. It was just an accident. (To Laura) we don’t need any replacement instead will you mind joining us?
Laura: (Amused.)No. I don’t share table with strangers(removing a business card from her hand bag and puts it on the table then proceeds to the washroom) we get to know each other first (as she disappears, appear Pinky and Dona dressed in a stylish manner)
Sam: Woo-hoo! Here they are.
Jeff: Wow! They are beautiful (pockets the card left by Laura)
Sam: (Pointing the seats) Feel comfortable queens
Pinky: (As they sit) Thanks Sam
Jeff: Welcome to our table
Sam: (Extending arm to the ladies) It is good you have arrived (pointing Jeff) Pinky, he is Jeff Wilson, the CEO of Wilsons Real Estate company
Pinky: Nice meeting you Jeff (to Dona) he’s Sam Jeremy (smiling) a son to the governor. (To Sam) she is Dona, daughter to the county executive advisor
Sam: (Surprised.)Dona Soni! I think I’ve heard about you. I’ve meet your mother in several occasions
Dona: (Looking gloomy.) That’s nice. Have I not been out of the county for higher education, we could have met.
Jeff: What do you do for a living, Dona?
Dona: You know how the cancer of unemployment is eating our county. (in a faint smile) I’m still jobless
Jeff: For some reasons, government should do something to the youths, especially to the unemployed graduates
Pinky: Dona, you aren’t jobless. You’re managing your mothers business. You are a manager! Do you geddit?
Dona: No. my mother’s business is not my business
Sam: (Realizes Dona’s mood) Queens, what are you drinking tonight? (Everyone orders drink. They continue chatting as they are served. Not so long, reappears Laura)
Laura: Wow, buddies! Or do I say love birds? You fit one another like a bolt and a screw
Jeff: So you’re still around?
Laura: I’m gone (starts to leave but stops abruptly) be informed love kills (she leaves as others laugh)
Dona: She is right. I’m a victim. It killed my fiancé.
Pinky: Chillax, Dona! Let sleeping dogs lie (to others) who is that lady?
Sam: We just bumped into her a while ago. We actually know nothing about her
Jeff: By the way she left us a business card. (Searching his pockets) here’s it. (Briefly reads it then gives it to Pinky) seemingly, she’s a police officer
Pinky: (Reading the card.) This card is familiar (to Dona) it is the same copy I found in Dr. Will’s office. She must be the officer behind Rich’s case
Sam: Pinky, what do you mean?
Dona: (Quickly grabs the card) Let me have a look at it
Pinky: (To Sam) Dona’s boyfriend committed suicide then it seems the officer in charge gave an order that Dona should not view the body
Jeff: (Surprised.)Is it the story circulating in the social media?
Dona: (Abruptly stand up then collects her bag ready to leave) Guys, I must find Laura. See you later
Sam: Be easy don’t make decisions when you’re mad
Dona: (Tears filling her eyes) I must give Richard last respect
Pinky: Girlfriend, I really doubt if that’s a prudent decision
Jeff: Let’s work out things tomorrow. I’ll help where possible
Dona: Nothing is going to change my mind
[Dona leaves quickly disappearing in the confusing disco lights. The rest are shocked remaining seated like statues]
Scene two
MAGGIE’S HOUSE, it is 10:30 p.m. Located on a hill, despite the darkness, lights dominate the compound. Everything is visible just like they are during the day. The house is built from foreign materials that locals rumour it to be a secret government base. The sides are polished concrete and the door a slab of shiny stainless steel. The windows are wide and more reflective like a mirror. Around the house are polished tiles making paths to the gardens and fields. Suddenly opens the gate, made from material of its own kind. A car with huge tyres enters the compound directly to the car parking on the left side of the house. From it, comes a man, in his fifties, who enters into the house without a knock
Jeremy: (Inside the house) Hello! Is anybody home? (No answer)Maggie! (Still no one answers.
He suits himself in the couch)
Maggie: (Coming from the stairs then notices the presence of Jeremy) Mzee, how long have you been here?
Jeremy: Not so long
Maggie: (Walking towards him) I really expected you earlier. Will you mind some ugali for dinner?
Jeremy: Yes I do. I’ve taken something at home
Maggie: No wonder you’re late
Jeremy: I had to go home first so that my wife cannot sniff any affair between us
Maggie: Alright dear. (Holding his arms) how was your flight?
Jeremy: Perfect. More goodies come on our way. I tell you
Maggie: You’re the only man that exists. Where are the goodies?
Jeremy: While in abroad, I had talks with world development agency. You can’t believe it
Maggie: (Interestingly). What did they say?
Jeremy: They’ve accepted to fund developmental projects in southern county
Maggie: (Goes to bookshelf to pick a pen and a note book) how long are we talking about? What are these projects? (Sitting on the arm of the seat of Jeremy)
Jeremy: In a week time. As the county executive advisor, make the proposal including the proposed projects. The ball is in your court.
Maggie: It is my pleasure, boss.
Jeremy: As usual make it realistic, wisely overestimate the prices of the resources
Maggie: (Nodding.) I’ll include human resources. I’ll have imaginary names of employees, enabling ghost bank accounts for our own benefit
Jeremy: (Smiling) I envy your wits, behind every successful man, there is a woman. (Pressing her nose gently) that woman is you. What happened while I was away?
Maggie: There is no any d**g in the county hospitals. We should be careful so that we can avoid unnecessary strikes. I hope you understand your subjects.
Jeremy: What happened to the supplier?
Maggie: The supplier demanded more than what the county could afford. I had to terminate the tender contract
Jeremy: I think that was not appropriate
Maggie: Don’t worry I have someone in mind. He is cooperating. I think we should award him the tender
Jeremy: Who is this?
Maggie: Dr. Druke Will. He is a nice guy
Jeremy: Your wish is my command (walks to the cabinet then serves himself a whisky. Maggie is busy with her pen and note book) by the way, where is Dona?
Maggie: (Not answering immediately). She is out to party with her friends. She has been grumpy of late. I guess she’s out to refresh herself
Jeremy: (Still next to the cabinet, sips from her glass as he adds more whisky.) You could have created her a county job. You see, this is what is stressing her
Maggie: Dona is behaving indifferently to that idea (stops writing) you can’t imagine. She decline the offer
Jeremy: Why?
Maggie: She claims she only wants a job acquired through merit
Jeremy: Is she not crazy?
Maggie: I realized her mind was corrupted by a certain imbecile, whom he claims to be the boyfriend. Someone not even of her caliber
Jeremy: Actually, who are you talking about?
Maggie: His name is Richard, one of your critics. His views to mwananchi are very destructive. I encountered some of them in the social media
Jeremy: (Seriously). What are his views?
Maggie: He criticizes everything you do. He claims your government suffers from corruption, nepotism, unfair distribution of resources and many others
Jeremy: (Frightened). How can I find him?
Maggie: Don’t worry mzee. He is no more
Jeremy: What do you mean? I’m in the dark
Maggie: He had an argument with Dona, he then committed suicide. The story was in the papers
Jeremy: I think I saw it somewhere. So it was him? It stands to reason that you perish if rattle my cage
Maggie: God really loves you dear
Jeremy: Good riddance! God who gave me the power will forever protect me
Maggie: Now his death is the cause of Dona’s stress
Jeremy: (Sipping whisky) I now see. Be careful with such people. Never allow them any close to your only daughter
Maggie: Once bitten, twice shy. It must never happen again. I’m now careful
Jeremy: She will calm down, eventually and accept the reality. I hope she will then serve our county the same way you’re doing
Maggie: I know her very well she takes after me
Jeremy: (Walking towards her). Talking about you, Maggie, you’re a queen in my kingdom
Maggie: Everything for you, my king.
[They hug and kiss then proceed upstairs. After a while, a door bangs in a room upstairs]
Scene three
OUTSIDE MAGGYS HOUSE, it is about 8:00 am. Sunlight penetrates over the electric walls, drying the dew on the grass and flowers. It’s a beautiful sight to see. In a gunboats and apron, Maggie is busy trimming the flowers surrounding the house. From the back, Dr. Will is coming swaying the keys in his left hand.
Dr. Will: Morning madam
Maggie: (Turning back) Oh! Good morning doctor so you’re around?
Dr. Will: Despite other duties, I managed to find some time for you. I cancelled other issues when you said you wanted to see me.
Maggie: Thank you. I won’t take much of your time
Dr. Will: I’m at your service (they sit on a bench nearby)
Maggie: The County is awarding you the tender of supplying drugs to the all the hospitals.
Dr. Will: I can’t believe it, madam
Maggie: That’s it. We won’t request any favour in return as we do to others. You’re my man and a deal is a deal
Dr. Will: Thanks a million times
Maggie: Don’t mention. Another thing, my daughter is very investigative (silence). You can’t imagine how she got to know the police in charge of Richard’s case
Dr Will: What do you mean?
Maggie: I think she left the option of coming back to you for the option of finding the officer.
Dr. Will: According to her, who is the officer?
Maggie: Today in the morning she informed me that Laura is the police who gave an order to deter her from viewing Richard’s body. Isn’t it the case?
Dr. Will: Yes. Laura is the officer in charge who brought Richard to the facility. I’m damn sure she has no idea what happened. Dona has wrong information
Maggie: Now what’s the complication?
Dr. Will: If she approaches Laura, it can raise Laura’s curiosity. You can imagine what might come next. Investigations to Dona’s claim
Maggie: (Nodding.) You’re right, doctor
Dr. Will: We need to know her intentions. Is she in?
Maggie: No. she is out to visit a friend
Dr. Will: Are you sure she is not meeting Laura?
Maggie: Actually, I can’t say what’s in her mind. But she left saying she’s out to see a friend
Dr Will: I hope she is not meeting Laura. (Standing) let me meet up with Laura as soon as possible. Don’t worry. Everything is in control
Maggie: I guess you know what to do. I don’t want to get involved with the issue
Dr. Will: Yes madam
Maggie: (Standing up) Meet Laura. Let me know what her request is so that we can bury the story once and for all. You know what I mean
Dr. Will: (Impatiently) I must leave now. (Leaving) See you.
Maggie: Bye doctor (resumes trimming, not so long, the gate guard arrives as the same time, her phone rings)
Guard: Someone at the gate requests to come in
Maggie: (Curiously.) Who is that?
Guard: He says he’s Jeff, a friend to Dona
Maggie: (Looking at the phone) Let him in (receiving the call as the guard leaves) Hello mzee!
Phone: (Briefly) Yes Maggie! Despite late night departure, I arrived home safely. Just called to report
Maggie: But remember it’s dangerous to walk alone at late night, Nicholas
Phone: Thank you for caring, my dear. See you!
Maggie: Bye (hanging up)
Jeff: (arriving in a casual outfit) Morning, mom
Maggie: Morning
Jeff: I’m Jeff Wilsons, a friend to Dona. Would you mind if I see her
Maggie: Oh, Jeff! How I wish you could find her home. By the way, I have never seen you around. Where are you from? And how long have you been friends?
Jeff: Not so long, mama. We met at a party last night. I’m from East Coast district. I’m the CEO of Wilsons real estate company
Maggie: So you were with her last night?
Jeff: Yeah. But she left prematurely. The reason for my being here is to confirm if she arrived safely.
Maggie: What happened?
Jeff: There was a certain police officer by the name, Laura she followed on grounds that the officer ordered, her not to view the body of her boyfriend
Maggie: Did she meet the officer?
Jeff: I can’t say a word on that. She never came back. That’s why I’ve decided to pass by before reporting to work
Maggie: Have you tried to call her?
Jeff: Yeah, but her call isn’t going through
Maggie: That’s expected of her, she likes switching off her phone whenever she is huffy. Have you tried to reach Pinky? I’m sure she must be there
Jeff: Pinky isn’t picking calls either. I called her severally this morning but she didn’t pick (dialing his phone) let me give it another trial any way
Maggie: Please do
Jeff: (He walks a few steps from her. He talks; seemingly Pinky has received his call finally. After a while, he struggles with the phone as if the call no longer goes through) Hello! Hello! Dona, are you there? (Goes back to Maggie. Worriedly) I think Laura has arrested Dona
Maggie: (In a disbelief) Huh?!
Jeff: She has been arrested at Pinky’s house moments ago while I was speaking to her
Maggie: (Frightened.) What a misery!
Jeff: We need to do something mama. I mean right now
[Obviously, Maggie is confused. She walks up and down. Then quickly marches into the house. In a flash of time, she comes out in a different outfit. Jeff has been standing still since then. They both dash to the car park. Maggie enters her vehicle as Jeff enters his. They leave the compound]
Scene four
PINKY’S HOUSE, it is 9:00 a.m. A simple double roomed house. In the bedroom, there’s a bed and a small wooden bookshelf filled with books to the brim near the door. The walls are navy colour while the door is pitch-dark. On the bed, Pinky wrapped herself in the duvet. Her phone on the bed rings severally but goes unpicked. Suddenly, she throws the duvet then squints around the room. Her brain feels like swelling beyond the capacity of her skull. She swings her bare feet to the carpet, it is cold and sticky underfoot. One bare look at the floor, it is obvious she ate late night fish and chips apparently. The smell of wine last night was pleasant, yet this morning it adds to the nausea. She is thirsty to ignore
Pinky :(Stands but sits back immediately.) What a head ache! (Forcing herself once more, gets a water bottle water over the shelf drink without stopping) I think I won’t drink again. So where do I start? (Looking around the room then finally at the vomit, she feels exhausted)What happened last night? (Thinking aloud) How did I reach home? The last thing I can remember is Sam driving me to his place. (Her phone rings. It’s Sam calling. Before she receives the call, she discovers a note next to the phone. She reads as she answers the call) Hey Sam!
Phone: Morning Pinky girl! Did you reach home safely dear?
Pinky: (Concentrating more into the note than to the call) Yap.
Sam: After such good moments together, what really upset you? You left claiming you were to correct some essays. Imagine in the middle of the night. (Sarcastically) did you mange?
Pinky: (Reading the note silently) ‘IT WAS A PERFECT NIGHT…’
Phone: Hello! Hello! (Pinky hangs up)
Pinky: (Continues reading)… I NEED MORE THAN A ONE-NIGHT STAND, PINKY. THERE’S A CHEQUE UNDER THE PILLOW. GOVE RNOR. (Quickly upturns the pillow then finds a cheque worth a hundred thousand shillings signed by Nicholas Jeremy) Oh! What a pity! The governor spent here last night. (Tapping the head) he must have collected me wondering along the streets from Sam’s house. (The phone rings again. She keeps the cheque inside one of the books one of books on the shelf)
Phone: (Sam’s voice.) Is something the matter?
Pinky: (Sighs) Look Sam. Let me refresh myself. Everything is messy these sides. I’ll call you later. (She hangs up. In the next room, everything is in its position except the main door that is not locked) so at what time did Jeremy leave? Why are these things happening to me? (Hardly before she starts to clean, there’s a knock at the door. Enters Dona)
Dona: Morning girlfriend!
Pinky: (Coming from the room) Morning Dona!
Dona: (Notices Pinky’s state.) You must have been a fish last night. Dear, you drank a lot. Look at yourself. You are pathetic.
Pinky: (Feeling the guilt.) You are not lying (scratching her hair) I don’t want to talk about it. I think I won’t drink again
Dona: (As they sit down) Why?
Pinky: (Hiding the stress) I woke up late, feeling dizzy and generally sick. At the same time, I have to correct some essays for my students before tomorrow. Actually, I don’t know what to do
Dona: I’m sorry dear. Don’t mind. No wonder I called in the morning to inform you that I was coming but you didn’t pick
Pinky: Now you know. How I wish I could have just left with you last night
Dona: It was next to impossible, bestie. My case was so different
Pinky: By the way how did your story and Laura end?
Dona: It’s a long story my dear
Pinky: Did you fight an officer?
Dona: No Pinky! You know me. I can’t. I hate fights, the same way I hate people who don’t reason (Pinky’s phone calls from the bedroom. Pinky goes for it and after a while comes back with it)
Pinky: (To Dona) it’s Jeff. He wants to say hey
Dona: (Taking the phone) Hello Jeff!
Phone: Hey, how are you?
Dona: Fine. Thank you
Phone: How was your last night? You left us so prematurely
Dona: Not bad.
Phone: Actually, it has really forced me to look for you this morning. In fact, I’m with your mom here at home. She is the one who advised me to get you through Pinky
Dona: How can I help you, Jeff?
Jeff: I want us to meet so that we can discuss about Laura’s case
Dona: Thanks for the concern. But you know…(The door interrupts that opens with a force and then enter three police officers. Without hanging up) Laura!
Phone: Hello! Hello! (No reply) Dona, are you there? (Dona and Laura stand for a while facing each other without a word like two wrestlers meeting for a champion belt)
Laura: (To Pinky.) You’re under arrest!
Pinky: (Shocked) Me!?
Laura: (Finality tone.) Under arrest for causing public disturbance and destruction of properties last night
[The officers, under assistance of Laura arrest Pinky then they leave. Dona locks the room and follows them]
ACT THREE Scene one
ONE OF THE CORRIDORS IN SOUTHERN COUNTY HOSPITAL, it is evening hours. Everything is usual. Everyone seems busy with whatever brought them here, except for Laura, in plain clothes. She walks one step after another maybe because she is neither a patient nor a doctor. On the bench, outside Dr. Will’s office, there are a number of patients queuing to see him. Laura looks at the patients briefly but she does not queue; instead she knocks at the door then enters
Laura: (Inside the office) Good evening, doctor!
Dr. Will: (Stops attending to the patient) Laura is that you? (To the patient) Wait outside for a minute (patient leaves)
Laura: Today seems a busy day for you. Huh?
Dr Will: You aren’t wrong
Laura: Why then did you insist I must come? I mean why now?
Dr. Will: (Removes spectacles and using a handkerchief wipes his face.) You will just understand
Laura: (Sitting down.) Or has he deal gone sour?
Dr. Will: Maybe, maybe not. How is he? I mean Richard.
Laura: He is better now. Why do you ask?
Dr Will: I hope so far nobody has seen him, right?
Laura: I have confined him in a room alone. He never sees sun nor stars
Dr Will: Has he asked for his freedom?
Laura: Aaargh! Will you please tell me what is going on instead of your questions?
Dr Will: I think it is time to tell you the truth. Can you keep a secret?
Laura: It depends on the nature of the secret
Dr Will: I had to rescue Richard that is why I handed him to you. The reason I did that was because I don’t like the court process
Laura: Actually, that’s what you said
Dr Will: The reality is I got instructions (silence)
Laura: From?
Dr Will: County Executive Advisor
Laura: What?
Dr. Will: Yeah. Richard was a boyfriend to her daughter, Dona. She took the advantage and ordered me to ensure that he dies. Professionally, I can’t lose a life I can save. That’s the reason I sought your help without giving you details. In fact the drugs Richard used were from my own pocket. The hospital’s pharmacy had none
Laura: You mean she wanted you to kill Richard
Dr Will: Exactly sheriff
Laura: I’m afraid. I don’t like issues involving me to that woman
Dr Will: Now my biggest worry is that Dona has discovers that you have a hand in Richards’s case. I don’t understand how
Laura: No wonder! Yesterday night, the so called Dona approached me and rudely asked me why I denied her to view Richards’s body
Dr Will: Then?
Laura: (A joking smile) I replied her rudely too, ‘next time you ask me about such s**t, I’ll pump bullets into your silly head!’ I wasn’t serious. I was tipsy. You know?
Dr Will: Is that all?
Laura: Not until today in the morning, while on a duty I found her in the house of Pinky, who had a warrant of arrest. But we did not exchange words with her
Dr Will: So you arrested Pinky, huh?
Laura: But she is free now. I don’t really know the kind of relationship she has with the governor. You can’t believe it
Dr Will: What happened?
Laura: Immediately I arrived at the station with her, Maggie and the group arrived then an ordering call from the governor. We had no choice but to release her
Dr Will: What did Maggie tell you?
Laura: Not much. We talked nothing about Richard. Anyway doctor, why am I here?
Dr Will: Help me keep that secret as we look way forward. Perhaps we may send Richard out of the county. What do you think?
Laura: Remember Richard is a grown up, an independent citizen. It may be impossible. But I think we can give it a trial. Now do you mean it wasn’t a suicide case?
Dr Will: I can’t give a word to that question. I’ve no idea on what happened but toxicological test was positive. Maybe you do further investigations
Laura: I can remember the first time I was in the crime scene; the door of his house was not locked from inside and the note I gave you was on the table with an energy drink half-filled
Dr Will: So what are your deductions?
Laura: In most suicide cases, suicides always close the door from inside and there is a normal tendency of writing long letters and not short notes as it was in the case of Richard. I think I need to have an interview with him. Remember I need the result of the content of the energy drink to ascertain if it has the poison
Dr Will: That will be really perfect if you keep it for your own consumption. Most important thing must be how to get ourselves from the web of Maggie.
Laura: It’s my promise anything I find out will deserve top secrecy
Dr Will: Any amount of money you require shall be given to you, if you don’t mind
Laura: I’m afraid I’ll mind, don’t bribe me
Dr Will: It is ok sheriff. Let me have my duty on. I’ll visit your place later with the result of the energy drink and to have a talk with Richard together
Laura: I’ll appreciate your visit. Have a nice time
Dr Will: Thank you for coming. Have a nice time too
[She leaves as Dr Will calls in the next patient]
Scene two
LAURA’S HOUSE, it is 5:00 PM. A house has several rooms. Simple but clean. Inside one of the rooms, there is a bed, a bed stand and a bookshelf. Curtains well spread alongside tightly closed window. A man, 28, sits on the bed. He is in singlet and a short trouser. Suddenly, enters Laura carrying a tray of food
Laura: Hello how are you today Richard?
Richard: I’m fine. Anyway when will I get out of this room?
Laura: Don’t mind. I can bring you anything you desire inside here (giving him a plate from the tray)
Richard: (Receiving the plate) All I want is my liberty. My freedom is more important to me than this food
Laura: You have no idea of the liberty you are talking about. Believe me you are safe here than any other place
Richard: No, Laura! Don’t infringe on my freedom for heaven’s sake
Laura: I don’t and I’ll never do such a thing to you not even once
Richard: Then let me go!
Laura: Listen, I’m doing this because I like you Richard otherwise government is hunting you down for attempting to commit suicide
Richard: (Astonished). Me?! Committing suicide? You must be nuts
Laura: (Removing a charge sheet from the bookshelf) Have a look at this
Richard: (Reading silently.) Do you mean I’m under arrest in your own house? Or is there something I don’t understand?
Laura: Yeah. You don’t understand how much I love you, Richard. Instead of taking you to police custody I have sheltered you here
Richard: (amused) No Laura! I love someone whom upon realizing I am here, you won’t have peace
Laura: Ahem! Dona Soni?
Richard: You know her?
Laura: People will only love you when you’re a live, when ‘dead’ like you are they move on. Let me be frank to you, Dona is seeing someone else
Richard: That is a lie, you and I know that
Laura: How I wish there could be a way to prove you wrong
Richards: (Walking towards the window) Dona loves me
Laura: She doesn’t (follows him then leans on his shoulder) she is seeing a rich guy by the name
Jeff Wilson, that guy is stinking cash. I tell you he rolls in millions
Richard: Stop it! (Gently pushes her a step away) I don’t trust you. You can’t convince me
Laura: Oh, yes! I can. You know what? I’ve a nice plan
Richard: (Eagerly) What plan?
Laura: I know their favorite drinking place. I’m pretty sure they can’t afford to miss there fine of these days. I’ll take their photos and show you
Richard: (Tactfully.)Oh! You can’t convince me with photo shops. I won’t believe you even for a second. Let me see with my own eyes
Laura: No! I can’t allow you out. That might even threaten my job
Richard: But it will be at night besides I can change my identity by putting on a wig and a shade. I assure you no one will notice me
Laura: It sounds nice but do remember they want you dead outside there… (Doorbell rings) it must be your doctor he promised to see you. Hold on. (Walks out and locks door from the other side. After a while, she comes in together with Dr. Will) Richard he is Dr Will, the savior of your life. You should literally worship him
Dr Will: Hello Richard Steve
Richard: Hello doctor! (Shaking hands) you know my other name. It seems you know much about me. Huh?
Dr Will: You were brought by Laura in the hospital after you had taken in poison. Why would you want to commit suicide?
Richard: I didn’t commit suicide. I actually don’t know what you are talking about?
Laura: (To Dr Will.) What is the result of the energy drink found in his room?
Dr. Will: The result indicated the content of the drink had the toxic that poisoned him. I guess he wanted to kill himself by that drink
Richard: (Shocked) Energy drink?! I can explain (scratching his head) I remember energy drink I was given by Dona a day before. She said (imitating) ’this is the best a man can get. Drink it whenever you miss me’. Do you try to mean Dona poisoned me?
Dr Will: If what you are telling us is true
Laura: What about the note? The one found on your table, Richard?
Richard: Yes, I wrote the note; ‘I FOREVER MISS YOU, I CAN CATCH A BULLET FOR YOU’ is that what you are talking about?
Laura: And isn’t that not a suicidal note?
Richard: No it wasn’t
Laura: And if it was not a suicidal note as you claim then what was your intention for writing that note?
Richard: I can explain. Earlier that day, we had a fall out about our personal issues which is common in any other relationship. Something that can’t make me commit suicide whatsoever. I missed her that evening then I wrote the note that I was to deliver to her. In the meantime I remembered the drink she had given me the previous night. I drank it.
Dr. will: Laura, what do you say about his story?
Laura: Without taking sides, I presume Dona wanted him dead
Dr Will: It might be the reason her mother ordered me that Richard must die while in the hospital (to Richard) do forgive me for reporting you dead. I just succumbed to Maggie’s threats.
Richard: Oh, my God! What wrong did I do to them?
Laura: You should start to know women. You don’t go to school to learn them
Richard: But why?
Laura: You now see the reason why the doctor here saved your life. You can’t even believe he used his pocket to cater for your bills. We decided to hide you away from the public then reported that you are dead after committing suicide. (Hands Richard a newspaper with the article about his death) The news went viral. Dude, now you are a ghost
Richard: (briefly reads it) I need to be alone please
[Dr Will and Laura look at one another in a way that suggests that they agree with him. They get out to the next room and lock him inside]
Scene three
CLUB CHANGERS, it is about 11:00 pm. Music is loud as usual. People drink, cheer and dance from one place to another. Most of them are drunk. This is evident because almost every minute there are physical fights between men and men, women and men or women and women. Thanks to the club guards who saved almost every situation. At a table, surround Dona, Sam, Pinky and Jeff. They sit in a manner that Dona faces Jeff directly and so is Pinky and Sam. On the table, there are wine glasses, cut lemons and several bottles of drinks
Jeff: (To Dona) Honey! Can I add you more drink?
Dona: Sure, why not dear? I think I like the cognac
Pinky: I think we are the same on that, France made brandy is superb
Jeff: There are two reasons why I think it’s the best option: first, there is the cost and second the quality
Dona: You are right Jeff (to Pinky) do you remember the deal, girlfriend?
Pinky: Remind me please
Dona: We promised not to drink too much tonight
Sam: Why? Are you scheduled tomorrow?
Pinky: (To Dona.)It was a deal.
Dona: Not that we are scheduled tomorrow but I don’t have a chauffeur and I dislike the fact of drinking and driving. Oh! I hate it.
Jeff: Don’t worry hun. We will drive to my place then in the morning I’ll send someone to pick the car then drive you home
Sam: Nice idea (sipping from his glass)as I drive with Pinky to my place
Dona: What make you two think that you won’t get drunk too?
Pinky: (Laughs.)Surely, tell us. (Emptying her glass as she serves more brandy) you can’t drive me when you are drunk
Sam: (To Pinky) But babe we are men. You know what we are stronger than you
Dona: No Sam. Liquor is the same to either men or women. Stop being chauvinistic (sipping )let’s be realistic on this
Sam: You are right, Dona. I agree. Actually you win
Jeff: I still have another plan (adds drinks to fill all the glasses on the table) what if we get guest rooms here. I guess Changers have best executive lodgings.
Sam: Sure ladies. I can sponsor any bill on that. What do you think?
Pinky: (Seems to be getting drunk) I agree with that. I don’t know what sweet Dona has to say
Dona: (Smiling) Maybe, maybe not (whispers something to Pinky’s ear, they look at each other then laugh) cheers friends! (At once, everyone lift their glasses then drink all the contents)
Pinky: (Standing)Sam, come babe. Let’s dance. I want to show the latest move in the town. (Pulling Sam then they start movements of salsa dance)
Dona: (To Jeff). You are not somebody until you are loved by someone. I bet there is love between them
Jeff: I see. Pinky must be a good dancer
Dona: (Smiling).Don’t make me jealous. Jeff, you want to see me dancing, right?
Jeff: No babe! I know very well you are a genius. Only if you start to dance, everybody will stop just to look at your movements (they laugh then kiss)
Pinky: (interrupting) Dona! Look at that i***t (pointing Laura who sits at a distant with a man in dreadlocks covered in a bobble hat. His eyes covered by dark sun glasses. He wears a black raincoat)
Dona: That’s Laura. What about her?
Jeff: She must be that police officer who arrested you, right?
Pinky: I must teach her a lesson today (moving towards Laura) watch and see
Dona: Don’t do that Pinky! Stop it! (Proceeds without taking heed)
Pinky: (Reaching Laura’s table then gives it a hefty slap) Do you really know me, you woman?
Laura: (She did not expect this). What’s the problem with you, Pinky? Can’t you just mind your own business?
Pinky: (Becoming violent.) Are you answering me or questioning me? (Yelling to attract attention of other people) I must teach you a lesson
Laura: (Pocking the man as she stands).Let’s get out of this place. She must be very drunk
Pinky: You think you are smarter than I do. (Slaps Laura) you harlot!
Laura: Did you just slap me? (Moving closer to Pinky but the man is quick to stop her)Pinky you are making a wrong decision (arrive Jeff and Dona)
Pinky: (To the man) useless man! (To Dona) Look at her new fella. God forbid! She is a p********e. I mean a professional one.
Laura: (Breaking from the man’s hand then punches Pinky’s abdomen.)Don’t you dare me! (Pinky groans in pain)
Dona: (To Laura.)You are inviting trouble to yourself, little miss. You’re making a big mistake
Pinky: (Walks staggering in pain towards her seat, meanwhile) Ouch! (On their table, Sam has been observing from a distance) Sam I’m in pain (removes a phone from her handbag) Laura must know people
Sam: What is the problem dear?
Pinky: (Falls a note on the ground as she takes the phone without noticing. Sam picks it up) Let me call the governor right away. Laura must be dismissed from the duties (goes back to Laura, who still stands where she left her with Dona and Jeff) Wait and see
Sam: (Absent mindedly) Okay (reading the note but to himself) IT WAS A PERFECT NIGHT I NEED MORE THAN A ONE-NIGHT STAND, PINKY. THERE’S A CHEQUE UNDER THE PILLOW. GOVERNOR (in a disbelief) Pinky has been sleeping with my father (fumes and goes completely gaga) this must not be!
Pinky: (To Laura.) Let’s now fight it out (approaching Laura but misses her. Instead, she reaches the man and pulls his bobble hat that comes off with artificial dreadlocks. To the man) nincompoop!
Dona: (Shocked as she notices the man) Richard!?
Pinky: (Trying to sober up) Are you Richard?
Laura: (To Richard) let’s get out of here
Dona: Oh, my Richard! I thought you were dead (trying reaching him)
Richard: (To Dona, angrily). Of course I’m dead, my sweet Dona. How did you expect your poisoned drink to fail?
Dona: Me? How?! It was not my intention to… (Laura pulls Richard and both escape in the crowd. Dona seems confused. She looks at their direction. Shortly, appears Sam)
Sam: (To Pinky.) What is this? (Showing a note onto the air) Are you cheating on me with my dad?
Pinky: (Sweating and shivering like a generator) Oh! How did you get that Sam?
Sam: You are just but a harlot (removing a pen knife from his pocket. Unexpectedly, she stabs Pinky severally in the abdomen) take that! (Pinky moans as she falls on the ground. Jeff tries to hold Sam but he disappears amongst people in the crowd. Dona dashes to Pinky as all hell break loose)
Dona: (To Jeff) Let’s do something, please.
[Jeff is out of wits as he looks at Pinky who lies in a pool of blood]
Scene four
MAGGIE’S LIVING ROOM, it is 6:00 am. The house is neatly arranged as usual. Curtains are still closed. It is half dark with only electric lamps on the wall on. Suddenly, the main door opens then enters Dona. Hurriedly she goes to a room upstairs and after a short while she comes back with a packed suitcase. She looks disturbed. Actually, she mumbles words to herself with only audible clicks- one after another. She comes down stairs and then stand at the center of the house near the coffee table
Dona: Mother! (Raising her voice) Mother! (With no answer she clicks even more. Starts to leave but abruptly goes back to the stairs. She calls even louder) Mother!
Maggie: (Coming down stairs). What is the matter with you? Why should you shout?
Dona: Lucky you! You’re still in your pyjamas. I’m leaving this home forever
Maggie: My dear! Is anything the matter? (Trying to hold her hands)
Dona: (Quickly pushes her hand from hers and move a step backward.) Don’t you dare touch me! Whatever you have done to me, I should not even call you a mother
Maggie: Dona, my daughter! What have I done? We can still talk
Dona: I have nothing to talk with you
Maggie: Then why to wake me up at this time?
Dona: To let you know that I am leaving your home forever if I must repeat.
Maggie: Calm down dear. Why and where?
Dona: Wherever. Why did you give me an energy drink to take to Richard?
Maggie: But I thought you loved him. It was my present to him. What about it?
Dona: Mama County, why did you poison the drink? Ehe! For your information Richard is not dead. Will you call him ghost?
Maggie: (Almost collapsing) His death was everywhere he is dead. Are you out of your mind?
Dona: I may be out of my mind, but Richard is alive. Now I beg to leave (she starts to move)
Maggie: Dona, please (stopping her) we must sue the doctor. If Richard is alive then further investigations should be done
Dona: Why did you poison the drink?
Maggie: Daughter, trust me. I know nothing on what you’re talking about
Dona: I met Richard yesterday night…
Maggie: You must be off your nut
Dona: And he said something about the drink
Maggie: What did he say?
Dona: That I poisoned him with the drink. In fact he acted in a manner that showed he believed I wanted to kill him. This is all because of you. Now why? (Tears rolling down her cheeks) I hate you with passion
Maggie: Remember I’m your mother. I have always wanted well for you
Dona: Just be frank with me. Why did you want to kill him?
Maggie: (Making a call). Let me ring Dr. Will so that he can give us explanation to your claims. The boy committed suicide. I don’t know why you drag me where I should not be (putting the phone at the ear) hello, doctor!
Phone: Hello madam
Maggie: Is Richard Steve dead or alive?
Phone: Alive and kicking
Maggie: What?
Phone: I’m sorry madam. I had to save him and forsake your orders. Forgive me I had to lie to you and the entire public
Maggie: Then you have a case to answer. I’ll sue for causing unbearable pain to friends and relatives of Richard
Phone: I’m sorry once more madam. The case is with the department of corruption and criminal investigations. I’ve recorded my own statements. I think they are coming for you anytime
Maggie: Dr Druke (trembling voice) what are you talking about? You are a real snitch!
Phone: I’m sorry for the last time, madam. I have to go (hangs up)
Maggie: Hello! Hello! (No answer. To Dona) this doctor is another i***t altogether
Dona: So Dr Will and you had a hand in this? (Sobbing) I can’t believe you
Maggie: I’m sorry. Do forgive me my daughter
Dona: I’ll never forgive you, Maggie.
Maggie: Where now do you go? Remember here is your home
Dona: Oh, yes! Home sweet home! (Pulling the suitcase towards the door as Maggie looks at her helplessly. She opens the door, coincidentally enters Jeremy.)
Jeremy: (astonished) Dona, good morning! Where are you going? I mean with the suitcase
Dona: What’s so good with the morning? You’re a devil himself (pushing her way out) please don’t touch me!
Maggie: (in faint voice) Dona! Little respect to your elders, please.
Jeremy: I’m sorry if I have wronged you in any way (letting her way) have your way
Dona: You’re feeling sorry for a wrong person. Go and tell Pinky your ‘sorries’ and perhaps your son, Sam. I think they really deserve
Jeremy: What is really happening with you, are you drunk at this time of the day?
Dona: Drunk or not drunk you must put this into your head. Pinky is bedridden. Your son stubbed her because of you, Nicholas! How on earth do you sleep with daughter in law? (Walking out) the heavens must judge you
Jeremy: Sam can’t do such a thing. You are simply crazy
Dona: Crazy my foot! (Slamming the door as she leaves)
Jeremy: (To Maggie.) Why is she acting precipitously?
Maggie: Is she right on what she is talking about?
Jeremy: I know nothing about her sentiments (removing the phone from his pocket) let me telephone Sam (dialing)
Maggie: (closes her eyes tightly in a vain attempt to hold the tears) Does it mean you are seeing Pinky?
Jeremy: That can’t be true. On that, I think Dona has wrong information
Maggie: Dona is right. Please enquire on what’s happening (Walking up and down as she shakes her head. Meanwhile, Jeremy tries to dial his phone severally)
Jeremy: No phone call is going through. What the hell is happening?
Maggie: What brings you here this early?
Jeremy: We are under siege, Maggie. County’s treasury kit is suspended on claims of corruption. We are expected to answer questions to department of corruption and criminal investigations. They might raid here anytime looking for evidence
Maggie: Mr. Governor I’m too weak to do that right now (suddenly, the doorbell rings. Jeremy goes to open the door. He slowly turns his head towards Maggie after opening it.)
Jeremy: Talk of the devil, here are the officers! (To the officers) how can we help you? (Moving a step inside to allow them in. enters four officers, led by one in plain clothes and the rest in police uniform)
1st officer: You are under arrest for corruption allegations among other offences
Jeremy: What are you talking about?
1st officer: You better keep quite because anything you say will be used against you in the court of law
Maggie: It is okay officers. Allow us to follow you in your office right away
1st officer: No way (to one of the officer) Arrest them
2nd officer: Both of them?
1st officer: Yes. (To the rest of officers) search for any evidence connected to corruption
Other officers: Yes sir!
[Maggie and Jeremy are handcuffed as they are lead out by 2nd officer. The rest of officers start to search the house. Outside the house, are all over journalists trying to interview them but they decline]
Scene five
LAURA’S LIVING ROOM, it is 7:00 am. The room is so tidy. It is furnished by a sofa, an arm chair, a recliner, a table with a vase of flowers and a book shelf. At the corners of the room are plant pots raised on stools. There is a white rug by the fire place. On the walls, there are flower portraits and a flat-screen television fixed the opposite side of the main door. In the recliner, sits Richard holding a throw pillow. He seems disturbed. Suddenly, enters Laura from the bedroom. She is dressed in the police uniform. She goes directly to the table and picks a remote then switches on the television
Television: ‘… and in our headlines today, the southern county governor, Nicholas Jeremy and county executive advisor, Maggie Soni arrested this morning in connection to corruption and misuse of public funds at the same time, the governor’s son, Sam Jeremy is reported to have stabbed a girlfriend yesterday night at a local bar. The suspect is in hide out. Elsewhere, Richard Steve who was alleged to have committed suicide is alive. This is after a statement recorded to department of corruption and crime investigation by Dr Druke Will… ’
Richard: (abruptly turning off the television) Damn it! I hate such publicity
Laura: (Laughing.)Your former mother in law is arrested. What a shame!
Richard: Stop joking. It is not funny anymore. Why was it necessary for Dr Will to record such a statement?
Laura: Are you not contradicting yourself? I thought you said you wanted your freedom? Didn’t you?
Richard: Yes I did. Freedom is all what I want
Laura: Then how did you expect to get your freedom without him reporting the case? Or do you want him jailed, instead?
Richard: Look here Laura; there are so many ways of killing a rat. We could have handled the case amicably outside the court process
Laura: Perhaps it could be better but I know Dr Will very well, he is another coward existing. He really fears that woman. Anyway have you heard the news about Sam?
Richard: Yeah, that’s shocking
Laura: Pinky must have been a pain in the neck. She must have gone bananas. It was a good guess she would land in a mess
Richard: That was not the Pinky I used to know. Actually, that character is not her possession
Laura: Pinky is a nuisance when she is drunk. But remember birds of the same feathers flock together (pausing then looks at him) Dona is not an exception
Richard: Laura, please do me a favour. Don’t mention that name to me. It makes me sick
Laura: It is okay. In fact it was your suggestion that you wanted to see her with your own eyes. Anyway was it necessary to mention the energy drink?
Richard: Be easy. I was apoplectic
Laura: I don’t have an issue with that. I’m getting late to report on duty (taking a file from the book shelf) don’t go out until I come back. I won’t take long
Richard: I don’t even want any living soul to sniff around my location. Be sure to find me seated here
Laura: (Leaving) Have a nice day and take care
Richard: Have a nice day too (leaning back in the recliner with his legs on the foot rest. This seems not to give him the desired comfort. After a while, Stands then turns on music from home theatre on the occasional table near the fire place. Resumes his seat, then closing the eyes feeling a bit relaxed. Due to loud music he does not hear the doorbell that rings severally. Suddenly the door opens. Enters Dona)
Dona: (Quickly turning off the music)Rich! You got to listen to me
Richard: (Astonished) b****y s**t! (Standing) Dona, don’t ever follow me. How did you even locate me?
Dona: Where else could I find you after seeing you with Laura?
Richard: (Pushing her gently towards the door.) Can you just leave. I mean now. I really need to be alone
Dona: Rich, just listen to me before you make your judgments
Richard: (Sitting in a sofa.) You better leave now or else…
Dona: Or else what? I’m not leaving (sobbing) if you were in my shoes you could have behaved the same. Dr Will is the one who misled me about the case of your death. Trust me honey
Richard: For heaven’s sake, don’t call me honey. He misled you to suit your mother’s orders who threaten everyone around. Dr Will is my savior
Dona: But the doctor was not straight to me
Richard: Now leave and go back to your mother (pointing the door) which part does you not understand?
Dona: (Kneels on the rug) There is no love lost between my mother and me. You are the only thing I have. Don’t forsake me
Richard: (Amused.) You must be confusing me with your Jeff Wilson, right?
Dona: I’m sorry. I knew you were dead. Jeff came to console me just like a friend only to lure me into a relationship with him (standing up) I don’t love Jeff. It is you who controls my heartbeat. It is only you who can give me the best loving
Richard: Be frank with me, Dona. Of all people, why did you want to kill me with a poisoned drink? I hate to say this I’ll never forgive you
Dona: Trust me. It was my mother’s intention. I am innocent (recalls and narrates) one day at a dinner table with my mother
Maggie: (Adding more food to Dona’s plate) by the way, how much do you love Richard?
Dona: Mom, don’t ask me that. I trust him with my own life. One day I’ll die for him
Maggie: My daughter but he is jobless. I can secure you a job at the county offices. Tell me how you are going to cope with someone who is not of your caliber
Dona: (Smiling) But we are both graduates. In fact he stands a better chance to secure a job before me. Remember I had told you I need a job acquired through merit. Don’t kill yourself securing me a job, my papers will
Maggie: (Looking at her for a while) Indeed you are nuts. Actually you love him. I really bet you love him so much than even yourself
Dona: Thank you for your observation. Anyway, how are you going to help me love him?
Maggie: Wait (goes to upstairs) enjoy your meals (after a while, comes back with an energy drink)this is the best drink you can give the one you love. I’m certain he will never forget you
Dona: (Receives happily) Thanks a lot mama. In fact I’m taking to him right away before he sleeps (back to her current character) this morning; I have disowned my mother because of you. I didn’t expect the drink to contain toxic substance. I can’t wish to have you dead.
Richard: You didn’t even bother to follow me in the hospital
Dona: I did follow you after receiving a call from Dr Will, who really frustrated my efforts of even seeing the body after his claims that you are dead. I simply had to give up. Rich, you could have done the same, if you were me
Richard: Oh, my God! Life is so unfair
Dona: (Moving closer to him) Remember the promise. You said you’ll never forsake me come rain come shine (sits next to him then rests her head on his thighs.) I love you. I really mean it
Richard: (Looking at her without changing his position) I have run out of words (suddenly, the door opens. This really freaks them, as they stand simultaneously facing the direction of the door. Enters Laura followed by Dr Will)
Laura: (Fuming with indignation) Dona, what are you doing here? Do you have to follow Richard this far? (Quickly removes a pistol from her pocket, directly points to Dona’s head then pulls the trigger. Dona falls down with a dull thud, blood oozing from her forehead. Dr Will rashes to examine her)
Dr Will: (Shaking his head) Laura, what have you done? She is dead
Richard: (Tears of anguish filling his eyes, he dashes to Dona pushing Dr Will away. Lifting her head) Dona! Dona! (No reply) Dona! (Looking at Laura) Surely, good people die for nothing.
