A glow of light
Olivia's POV As I stand in the small bathroom, the warm water cascading over my hands, I help my mother wash her feet in the tub. The lavender scent of the soap fills the air, mingling with the soft hum of our conversation. "How are you always so positive, mum? After everything that happened." I say with admiration evident in my voice. My mum leans back in her wheelchair, her eyes fixed on my face. She smiles and says, "Well, what's the alternative? We've got to find a way to keep moving forward, no matter what life throws at us." With a gentle laugh, I wheel my mother out of the bathroom to her room, the wheels squeaking softly against the tiled floor. As I enter the living room, the sounds of my siblings' voices fill the air, punctuated by the occasional shriek of laughter. "What on earth is going on out here?" I exclaim, my eyebrows raised in mock exasperation as I survey the scene before me. These two are dangerous. You never know what to expect from them. In the centre of the room, my twin brothers, Hansen Jr. and Harry are engaged in a heated argument, their faces flushed with frustration. I sigh inwardly, knowing that their squabbles are a regular occurrence in this house. "What's the matter, boys?" I ask, my tone gentle yet firm as I approach them. Hansen Jr. shoots me a sheepish grin, his hazel eyes darting away guiltily. "Uh, nothing, Liv. Just a little disagreement, that's all." Hansen is usually the troublemaker. So I know he initiated this shenanigan. I arch an eyebrow, my lips twitching with amusement. "A little disagreement over what, exactly? And why do you both look like you've been caught red-handed?" Harry shuffles his feet nervously, his cheeks flushing crimson. "Well, you see, Liv, we were just...borrowing a couple of your shirts. You know, the ones from that designer lady who comes to the shop?" My eyes widen in disbelief. "You took that lady's shirt? Without asking? You both know how much they mean to her! Do you want me to lose my job?" Hansen Jr. shifts uncomfortably under my gaze. "We're sorry, Liv. We just wanted to impress some girls at school, that's all." I shake my head in exasperation, a wry smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "Honestly, you two. You're lucky I love you." I go back to my room and head for the shower. Blue, my sister, has most of her clothes lying on the floor. As I step outside into the warm embrace of the Boston summer, I can't shake the feeling of unease that gnaws at my insides. Despite my best efforts to stay positive, doubts creep into my mind, like shadows lurking in the corners of my consciousness. I find myself wandering past the campus of a nearby college, the laughter of students echoing in my ears. I can't help but feel a pang of envy as I watch them, their hopes and dreams so tangible, so within reach. And look at me, I dropped out of college to achieve things that are a lot like dreams. Look where I am now. Will I ever have the chance to pursue my dreams? Or am I doomed to a life of endless struggle, with no light at the end of the tunnel? With a heavy heart, I turn away from the bustling campus and continue on my way, my thoughts consumed by the uncertainty of my future. My life. When I arrive at Anxietea, the café where I work as a barrister, I'm greeted by the sight of my coworkers gathered around the counter, their faces alight with excitement. "Guess what, Liv?" one of them exclaims, her eyes sparkling with joy. "The boss just gave us all the month off! Can you believe it?" A chorus of cheers erupts from the group, but I feel a sinking sensation in the pit of my stomach. While my coworkers celebrate the unexpected reprieve, all I can think about is the loss of income and the mounting bills that await me. Forcing a smile, I excuse myself from the festivities and slip out of the café, the weight of my worries pressing down on my shoulders like a leaden cloak. Desperate for a reprieve from my troubles, I make my way to my friend Jade's photography gallery, seeking solace in the familiar surroundings. As I stand before a painting by Van Gogh, I can't help but feel a pang of longing for a life beyond the confines of my current reality. I wish I was a painting. "Hey, Liv," Jade greets me with a warm smile, her eyes filled with concern. "You okay? You seem a million miles away." I force a smile, my heart heavy with unspoken burdens. "I'm fine, Jade. Just... thinking, you know?" Jade nods understandingly, her gaze softening with empathy. "Well, how about I take you out for lunch? My treat. And then you crash over at my place, and we'll talk about boys who broke our hearts." I accept the offer, my mind buzzing with a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. I don't know what I have done to deserve Jade. As we walk through the bustling streets of Boston, I can't shake the feeling that I'm standing at a crossroads, teetering on the edge of a precipice between shadow and light. When I return home later that evening, I'm greeted by the sight of my family gathered in the living room, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of the television. My father sits in his favourite armchair, my brothers snoring softly on the couch beside him. While my sister Blue taps away on her laptop, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Hey, Liv," Blue called out as I entered the room, her voice tinged with excitement. "I've been waiting for you. Can we talk?" I nodded, sinking into the nearest armchair and glancing at Blue expectantly. "Sure, what's on your mind?" Blue hesitated for a moment, her fingers tapping nervously on the keyboard of her laptop. "Well, it's about this scholarship I've been applying for," she began, her voice uncertain. "It's a really big opportunity, but... I'm not sure if I should go for it." I furrowed my brow in confusion, my mind racing to catch up with the conversation. "Why wouldn't you want to go for it, Blue? It sounds like an amazing opportunity." Blue sighed, her gaze dropping to her lap. "It's just... I'm worried about leaving my boyfriend behind. He means everything to me, Liv, and I don't want to lose him." My heart ached at Blue's voice, the weight of her words settling heavily on my shoulders. "Blue, I understand that you care about him, but you can't let fear hold you back from pursuing your dreams," I said gently, reaching out to squeeze her hand. "If he truly cares about you, he'll support you no matter what." Blue nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "You're right, Liv. I know you always have my back." As Blue returned to her laptop, lost in thought, I sighed and rubbed my temples, the exhaustion of the day catching up with me. With a heavy heart, I rose from the armchair and made my way to my room, the weight of the world pressing down on my shoulders. I prepared for my night shift as a nurse assistant, and the familiar routine provided a welcome distraction from my swirling thoughts, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease creeping over me. The events of today have left me feeling adrift, I am unsure of where I belong. When I arrived at the hospital, the sterile corridors felt strangely comforting, my sanctuary from the chaos of the outside world. As I made my rounds, checking on the patients in the elderly care ward, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to change, that the universe was on the brink of a seismic shift. And then, as if on cue, I saw him—the enigmatic stranger sitting in the waiting room, his presence casting a shadow over the familiar surroundings. His eyes met mine, and at that moment, I felt a shiver run down my spine. I felt something within my soul. Like a spark igniting a fire. Who is he, and why does his presence feel like a dagger to my chest, but in a good way? In an indescribable way? Only time would tell, but one thing was certain: the shadows and light of my past were about to collide in ways I could never have imagined. Who is this man who has suddenly cast a glow of light on the darkest part of my soul?
