“We’ll be ready, Uncle Lucien,” Madi and Pedro cried. There was no need for Sheena to say anything. When he was gone she helped the children to chicken, new potatoes and young green peas. Any other day she would have enjoyed the luncheon herself. The beautifully cooked food at the Embassy with its delicate flavours and succulent sauces was a never ending delight. But today she felt that she could eat nothing. There were so many emotions at war within her that she felt as if she would choke if she ate so much as a mouthful. She was wildly ecstatically happy even while she loathed herself for the deception and lies she must tell Lucien. But actually there was nothing else she could do except keep up the pretence until Uncle Patrick answered the urgent almost desperate letter that she had
