17 I drove to the police station the next day eager to see Reggie but my mind kept drifting back to Valerie. We had a close and comfortable dinner last night and it could have progressed further had either of us pushed. The signs were there: her enlarged pupils, the intensity in her eyes when she looked at me, how she leaned toward me and mimicked my body behavior. I was tempted to make a play but something inside stopped me. I didn’t know what that something was until I was in bed that night. Valerie needed time to get over Mark. Any intimacy at this time was bound to be short-lived. I didn’t want to make a false start. The moderate weather continued. Last night’s rain still covered the pavements and might not evaporate with gloomy, overcast skies and the promise of more precipitation.
