The Woman at the Door
Episode 1: The Woman at the Door Emma Carter stood outside the enormous glass tower, staring at the golden letters above the entrance. HAYES GLOBAL. She checked her phone again. 9:47 a.m. Her interview was scheduled for ten o'clock. “Don't be nervous,” she whispered to herself. “It's just a job interview.” But it wasn't just any job. Hayes Global was one of the most powerful companies in the city, and its CEO, Alexander Hayes, was known for being intelligent, demanding, and almost impossible to impress. Emma took a deep breath and walked inside. The receptionist looked up. “Good morning. How may I help you?” “My name is Emma Carter. I'm here for an interview with Mr. Hayes.” The receptionist typed something into her computer. “Yes. Forty-second floor.” Emma thanked her and walked toward the elevator. As the doors closed, she looked at her reflection. She had spent the entire night preparing answers for possible interview questions. She needed this job badly. Her previous company had closed unexpectedly, leaving her without work for nearly three months. The elevator stopped at the forty-second floor. A woman in a dark suit was waiting. “Emma Carter?” “Yes.” “I'm Sophia, Mr. Hayes's secretary. Follow me.” Emma followed her down a quiet hallway. They stopped in front of a large office door. Sophia knocked. “Come in.” The voice from inside was calm and commanding. Emma entered. Alexander Hayes stood beside the window. He was dressed in a dark suit, his expression serious as he looked across the city. Then his eyes turned toward Emma. For a moment, neither spoke. “Sit,” he said. Emma sat across from his desk. Alexander remained standing. “You're applying for the executive assistant position.” “Yes.” “You have experience?” “Three years.” “I've read your résumé.” Emma nodded. “Then you know this job isn't easy.” “I wasn't expecting it to be.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Most people say that during interviews.” “I mean it.” Alexander finally sat down. “Why do you want to work here?” Emma thought carefully. “Because I believe I can do the job.” “That's not an answer.” She looked directly at him. “I need an opportunity, and you need someone capable of doing the work. If you give me the opportunity, I'll prove myself.” Alexander studied her. “You're confident.” “I try to be.” “Confidence can become arrogance.” “So can power.” The room became silent. Emma immediately realized what she had said. Alexander's expression didn't change. But something in his eyes did. “Interesting.” He opened another file. “Your previous employer described you as loyal.” “I am.” “Even when loyalty becomes difficult?” Emma paused. “Yes.” Alexander stared at her for several seconds. Then he closed the file. “You're hired.” Emma blinked. “I'm sorry?” “You heard me.” “Just like that?” “I don't have time to repeat myself.” A small smile appeared on Emma's face. “Thank you, Mr. Hayes.” “Your first day is today.” “Today?” “Yes.” Alexander pressed a button on his desk. “Sophia.” The door opened. “Yes, sir?” “Show Emma her office and explain her responsibilities.” Sophia nodded. Emma stood. Before she could leave, Alexander spoke again. “Emma.” She turned. “Yes?” “There's one rule.” “What rule?” “Never lie to me.” Emma nodded. “I won't.” She walked out. Neither Emma nor Alexander knew that those four words would become important very soon. Never lie to me. Three hours later, Emma was already overwhelmed. Alexander's schedule was packed with meetings, phone calls, business trips, contracts, and confidential documents. But she handled everything. At 4:30 p.m., she entered Alexander's office with a revised schedule. “Your six o'clock meeting has been moved to tomorrow morning.” Alexander looked up. “Who authorized that?” “I did.” His expression hardened. “You changed my schedule without permission?” “The client called. His flight was delayed. Keeping the meeting at six would have wasted your time.” Alexander looked at the document. Then at Emma. “You made the correct decision.” Emma smiled. “Thank you.” “Don't smile yet.” Her smile disappeared. “Why?” Alexander stood. “Because there's another problem.” He handed her a sealed envelope. “This arrived this afternoon.” Emma looked at it. “Who sent it?” “I don't know.” “Should I open it?” “No.” He took the envelope back. For the first time that day, Emma noticed something unusual in his expression. Fear. Not anger. Not irritation. Fear. “What's inside?” she asked. Alexander looked at the envelope. “Something that should have remained buried.” Before Emma could ask another question, his phone rang. He answered. “Hello?” His face slowly changed. “What?” He listened. Then his voice became cold. “Don't touch anything. I'm coming.” He ended the call. Emma watched him. “What happened?” Alexander looked at her. “Someone broke into my private archive.” Emma's heart began beating faster. “Was anything stolen?” “We don't know.” He walked toward the door. Then he stopped. “Emma.” “Yes?” “Go home.” “But—” “Now.” She nodded reluctantly. As Emma walked toward the elevator, she couldn't stop thinking about the mysterious envelope. When she reached the lobby, her phone vibrated. An unknown number had sent her a message. She opened it. There was only one sentence. “Ask Alexander why he made a promise to a woman named Clara.” Emma stared at the screen. She had never heard that name before. Another message arrived. “Your new boss is not the man you think he is.” Emma looked back toward the elevator. She suddenly wondered whether accepting the job had been the biggest mistake of her life. And upstairs, Alexander Hayes stood alone in his office, staring at an old photograph of himself and a young woman. On the back of the photograph were five words: THE PROMISE MUST BE KEPT. Alexander closed his eyes. After eight years, the past had finally returned.
