The Dream That Killed Me
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
The sound echoed steadily in my ears, sharp and mechanical, dragging me through a thick, suffocating darkness.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t open my eyes.
But I could hear.
“…you are the dumbest person I know.”
My heart stopped.
I knew that voice.
Even if I were dead, I would still recognize it.
My husband.
The man I loved more than I loved myself.
“All I have to do is coax you,” he continued with a low chuckle, “and you’ll give me the world.”
Pain exploded in my head, as if something inside it had cracked open again.
Memories rushed back like a nightmare I couldn’t escape.
I had seen it.
With my own eyes.
Him… and my best friend… on my bed.
The betrayal.
The disbelief.
And then
A sharp blow to my head.
Darkness.
So this is what came after.
A hospital.
A slow death.
“…what did I ever do wrong…?” I tried to speak, but no sound came out. Not even a whisper.
Tears slid silently down the sides of my face.
“I have been a fool…” I thought bitterly. “All my life.”
Another voice entered the room.
Cold. Unfamiliar.
“Stop wasting time,” the person said impatiently. “Just finish it.”
My heart trembled violently.
Finish it…?
“I’m dying anyway…” I thought, despair creeping in.
Then suddenly
The oxygen mask was ripped off my face.
Air.
I couldn’t breathe.
My chest tightened as panic surged through me. My mouth opened desperately, trying to drag in air that wouldn’t come.
No…
No!
My vision though already dark felt like it was collapsing in on itself.
My body convulsed weakly as I gasped.
Desperately.
Painfully.
Until
Everything went silent.
---
“Young miss! Wake up, you’re going to be late!”
My eyes snapped open.
I sat up abruptly, dragging in a deep breath as if I had just been pulled out of water.
Air.
Sweet, normal air.
My hands flew to my face.
No oxygen mask.
No pain.
No blood.
I looked around.
My room.
Familiar.
Safe.
“…a dream?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
But it didn’t feel like one.
It felt real.
Too real.
And then—
Memories flooded back.
Yesterday.
It was supposed to be my engagement… to the Mo family.
A marriage I never wanted.
Because I already had someone I loved.
Li Wei.
Just thinking of his name made my chest tighten slightly.
Yet the dream
No.
That nightmare
It lingered in my mind like a warning I couldn’t ignore.
“Young miss,” my maid called again from outside, “Master is waiting for you in his study. You should see him before going to school.”
“I’m coming,” I replied quickly, forcing my voice to steady.
I pushed the thoughts aside and rushed into the bathroom.
Cold water splashed against my skin, but it didn’t wash away the unease in my heart.
Maybe I was just overthinking.
It was just a dream.
It had to be.
---
Oh right.
I haven’t introduced myself.
My name is Jiang Jue.
The only daughter of the Jiang main family.
In Country C, the Jiang family stands among the five most powerful families.
Within the Jiang clan, there are three divisions: the main family, the branch family, and the minor family.
And the main family
My family
Holds the highest authority.
In simple terms…
I was born at the top.
---
After getting dressed, I headed downstairs, barely touching my breakfast before making my way to Grandfather’s study.
But I was told he had already left for something urgent.
Strange.
He was the one who asked to see me.
A faint uneasiness crept into my chest again.
I didn’t like this feeling.
---
On the way to school, I stared out the window in silence.
Every day, I would pick up my best friend, Sisi.
But today…
“Drive,” I said suddenly.
The driver hesitated. “Young miss, what about Miss Sisi?”
“…don’t wait for her.”
Even I didn’t understand why I said that.
Maybe…
It was because of the dream.
Because in that dream
The girl on my bed…
Looked exactly like her.
I clenched my fists.
“No,” I muttered under my breath. “I’m thinking too much.”
---
When I arrived at school, something immediately caught my attention.
A crowd had gathered not far from the entrance, surrounding a sleek black car.
Curiosity stirred.
As I stepped out of my car, my gaze shifted toward the scene
And then
Our eyes met.
A pair of cold, grey eyes locked onto mine.
Sharp.
Dangerous.
Like a predator watching its prey.
For a moment
I couldn’t look away.
And for some reason…
My heart skipped.
