CHAPTER 1
Tapping her fingers impatiently on the polished mahogany desk with her leg churning out of nervousness. Sierra wondered what her fate would be. Would she be lucky this time?
She noticed the clock across the office tick, it's noon.
Shortly after the door opened. A man in a lab coat entered with a report in his right hand. Sierra stood up with a curious yet worried gaze as she looked up at the doctor with a glazy expression.
“Doctor Joshua!”
The doctor nodded in acknowledgement, “I have received your report, Mrs. Caldwell.”
“S–so how is it?”
The doctor adjusted his glasses shrewdly with his left hand before proceeding into the room.
“Am I pregnant.”
“Don't we have a seat and talk more about that, Mrs. Caldwell?” The doctor suggested calmly.
Now aware of her anxiety, she nodded while trying to control her pounding heart and overactive mind. “Yes doctor.”
They settled down in their appointed seats, Dr Joshua sitting in his chair and Sierra sitting across the chair in the desk assigned for patients or visitors.
“So what have you found out doctor, am I pregnant?” Sierra's hands went to the desk as she leaned forward looking at the doctor desperately. That was the best she could do to stay calm.
After losing her baby since the previous year, her husband has been drifting away from her. It was obvious! He no longer looked at her like he used to, he would stop coming to bed to her completely!
But these recent days, she found a ray of hope
Hope
A throbbing headache and feeling of nausea? Lightheadedness? Many would hate having these symptoms. But for her it was everything! Sierra's hands unconsciously rested on her belly.
A pregnancy
That was her hope to get back the love and affections of her husband and also her mother-in-law. Just the confirmation of the pregnancy from the doctor after all the symptoms she’s had the past couple of weeks. Her relationship with her husband would go back to how it was.
Euphoric
Loving
Kind
“I am deeply sorry to inform you that you are tested negative for a pregnancy, Mrs. Caldwell.”
Her only hope was dashed just like that, “What?!” Sierra threw her hands over the desk rigidly as she stood to her feet, looking at the doctor with her eyes glistening with tears. “No way!”
Doctor Joshua remained calm. He had been the Caldwell family's doctor for years. Although Sierra was a recent member of the family, he understood that getting pregnant was pertinent to having a place in her husband's life.
“I have had some pregnancy symptoms!” Sierra protets.
Doctor Joshua looked at Sierra sympathetically as she continued to ramble. “I had a splitting headaches, I feel lightheaded and I kept craving foods or aversions!” She announced still in disbelief.
“About that, Mrs. Caldwell..” The doctor looked at Sarrie attending before saying, “You might want to sit down for this.”
Sierra plowed down on the chair distraught and depressed by the doctor's serious expression.
“The body scan indicated that you are not pregnant, Mrs. Caldwell. But you only had pseudocyesis.”
“Enough of this suspense, Dr. Joshua. You know I can't understand what that means, so please just say whatever it is!” Sierra was usually kind and deliberate about her actions. She is presently frustrated. Doctor Joshua kept mentioning that she was not pregnant despite telling him that she had all these symptoms. If she wasn't pregnant, then what was it?!
“It's sometimes called false pregnancy, it's the appearance of clinical or subclinical signs and symptoms associated with pregnancy, although the individual is not carrying a fetus.” The doctor pushed the report lying in front him towards Sierra.
“W-what!? She shuddered feeling her stomach tighten.
“That must have being the reason for your proclaimed pregnancy symptoms,” Doctor Joshua confirms.
“It's commonly to someone who had experienced some amounts of miscarriage.”
Sierra stomach dropped with her heart breaking and her throat closing up. How could she have such a horrible diagnosis or joke? Just this morning her mother-in-law looked at her with such hopeful eyes even her husband too had looked at her a bit different from before.
How could she go back home and explain that she wasn't pregnant that it was just pseudocyesis due to her own strong desires to have her own child. It was beyond shameful to her. It makes her scared. She really wants to leave this kind of life she's living.
Memories of her life back in the field where she loved with her father at Cedar bluff in Alabam flashes in, which consumes her and makes her want to cry.
Her father
Her poor father
She has not done anything for him yet other than sending him money, she couldn't even see him or hear his voice. He had gone through so much to raise her alone after her mother left the world while giving birth to her younger sister.
“Mrs. Caldwell, are you listening?”
Sierra was snapped out of her thought on hearing the doctor's voice. “Oh, yes yes” she said quickly.
“Then why don't we continue—”
“—No, I'm sorry, I have something to do so why don't we continue this conversation some other time?” Sierra said, grabbing her report and her handbag which was slung in the chair.
She was scared
And she didn't want to hear a thing that could crush her soul any further. Most importantly after she reached her husband's house back with the states of her hopeful mother-in-law awaiting a good news.
“Mrs. Caldwell, I understand that this result might be frightening for you, but I need you need not to think about it that much. It can cause some kinda of mental illness too like schizophrenia. You can as well come with your husband next time for consultation there would be therapist and counsellor to help you. That way we can talk in-depth about your health.”
That was as far as Sierra was willing to listen to before she walked out the door without a response, hot tears rolling down her cheeks.
