Chapter III’ve never tried to explain to anyone how I ended up staying with Arabela and how I, so adamant to protect my independence, accepted this complication and its difficult consequences. Everything was so simple and unplanned that any single explanation would have sounded insincere.
Arabela stayed out of lethargy. Just as she came.
“What about,” I asked her the following day, “if you didn’t continue your tour and stayed here?”
“I don’t know. Let’s try.”
In the evening, I found her in my room, already settled. She had brought with her a small suitcase and her toiletries: that was all of her luggage. I asked her how she had settled it with the others.
“They’ve gone.”
“Was it difficult?”
“No. I settled everything with them and they left. Anyway, I never did anything.”
