The Woman He Never Chose
Sophia Bennett once believed love could be earned. She believed if she loved hard enough, waited long enough, and endured quietly enough, even the coldest heart would eventually soften.
She was wrong. Very wrong.
Tonight, on the third anniversary of her marriage, Sophia sat alone in the grand dining hall of the Kingsley mansion, staring at a candlelight dinner prepared for two.
The candles had nearly burned out, the steak had gone ice cold, and the expensive wine sat untouched.
Her husband still hadn’t come home.
Outside, heavy rain battered the windows like an angry warning from heaven.
Sophia glanced at the grandfather clock. 11:58 PM. Two minutes until midnight. Two minutes until the day ended, and she finally stopped lying to herself.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated on the marble table. Her heartbeat quickened. Ethan?
She grabbed the device so fast her hands trembled, but the tiny spark of hope inside her died immediately.
It wasn’t a text message from her husband. It was a breaking news notification.
Her eyes landed on the viral headline: Billionaire CEO Ethan Kingsley Seen Entering Luxury Hotel with Ex-Girlfriend Olivia Carter.
Sophia stopped breathing, her fingers turning ice cold as she opened the article.
The attached photos were crystal clear. Ethan, her husband of three years–the man she had loved in agonizing silence for five—had his arm wrapped protectively around Olivia’s waist. Olivia leaned into him with a radiant smile, and Ethan… Ethan was smiling back. He was looking at Olivia with a tenderness and warmth that Sophia had spent years desperately praying to receive just once.
A bitter, broken laugh escaped her lips as tears finally blurred her vision.
Of course he went to Olivia tonight, she thought.
Tonight of all nights.
The truth was cruel but simple.
Sophia was Ethan’s wife, but Olivia was Ethan’s love. Three years ago, Ethan had only married her because his grandfather demanded it to secure the Kingsley inheritance. A business transaction. Nothing more. Sophia had entered the arrangement blindly in love. Ethan had entered it deeply resenting her. And for three years, she had stayed, believing patience could create miracles.
Tonight, the illusion shattered completely.
The heavy front door groaned open, and steady, confident footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.
Sophia stiffened, wiping her cheeks quickly.
Ethan Kingsley walked into the dining room, impossibly handsome in his tailored black suit, stray raindrops still clinging to his broad shoulders. His sharp features carried the same icy indifference he wore every single day. His dark eyes swept over the untouched dinner table, finally landing on Sophia. His expression didn’t change a fraction.
“You’re awake,” he noted, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of guilt.
Two words. After missing their anniversary for his ex, that was all he had to say.
Sophia rose slowly to her feet, her voice tight. “I waited.”
Ethan removed his luxury watch calmly, not even looking at her. “You shouldn’t have.”
The words sliced through her. Something inside Sophia finally snapped—not loudly or dramatically, but quietly, like the final thread of a heavy rope breaking under too much weight. She walked toward the sideboard, pulled out a neat white envelope she had prepared weeks ago, and placed it directly into his hands.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “What’s this?”
“An anniversary gift,” Sophia met his gaze, and for the first time in three years, there was no longing or pleading in her eyes. Only utter exhaustion. “My goodbye.”
The air in the room turned dangerously cold as Ethan looked down at the bold lettering: Divorce Agreement.
His jaw tightened instantly, a dark shadow crossing his face. “You want a divorce? Because of a tabloid article?”
Sophia let out another bitter laugh. Even now, he thought this was about one night or one woman. He truly didn’t understand.
“No, Ethan. This isn’t because of Olivia. This is because I’m tired. I’m tired of being your unwanted secret, and I’m tired of waiting for a love that is never going to come.”
For the first time, the arrogant CEO said nothing.
Sophia’s tears fell silently, but she forced herself to ask the one question that had haunted her for years. “Tell me the truth, Ethan. In these three years… did you ever love me? Even for a second?”
The silence that followed was deafening. Then, Ethan spoke. One word, cold and merciless. “No.”
It was the final blow. The last remnant of hope inside Sophia died completely, replaced by a strange, hollow clarity. She nodded slowly, a broken smile forming on her lips. “I understand. Please sign it.”
“No,” Ethan snapped, tossing the papers onto the table with sudden violence. He took a predatory step closer, towering over her, his voice low and dangerous. “I’m not signing. You don’t get to walk into my life and leave whenever you please, Sophia. This marriage ends when I say it ends.”
“For three years, everything has been your choice!” Sophia yelled back, her voice cracking with years of suppressed pain as she pushed against his solid chest. “You chose to ignore me! You chose to hurt me! For once, let me choose myself!”
Turning her back on him, she grabbed the small suitcase she had hidden near the door.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Ethan’s voice was sharp, but underneath the ice, something unfamiliar vibrated.
Sophia turned the doorknob, looking back over her shoulder. For a fleeting second, she thought she saw a flash of genuine panic in his dark eyes–as if the reality of her leaving actually terrified him.
But right then, his phone lit up on the counter.
Olivia Calling.
The spell broke.
The sad, familiar smile returned to Sophia’s lips. She had almost believed she mattered. What a joke.
“Goodbye, Ethan,” she whispered.
She opened the door and stepped out into the raging thunderstorm, disappearing into the dark night.
