Chapter Twelve One evening Anne was coming home from the playhouse. She had been with two friends and they had offered to escort her back to her father’s house, but she had refused, saying that it was a fine night and she wished to walk alone. As she got nearer to home, she thought she heard footsteps behind her. She hastened her walk, then suddenly stopped. The footsteps died, but only a few seconds later, when she resumed her walk, she was certain the footsteps were following her once more. Again she stopped, and turned to look back, but saw nothing.
