Chapter Thirteen
The day after her encounter with Sir William, Anne received an invitation from the king to dine with him. This was a development she scarcely expected within such a short time; Sir William must not have exaggerated when he said she had made a hit. Anne was more excited than she could remember and spent all day wondering what to wear. She even sought out her sister, for her advice. “What kind of clothes does he like?” she asked. “Should I be modest or more forthcoming?”
“Do you think I am going to help you replace me in his bed?” Mary said. Things were not going well for her. Now that her husband had died, and she was heavily pregnant, not something that Henry found appealing, she was thrown back on her own company, and that apparently was a poor substitute.
