Ivan Nakonechny

“He was registered with the Maidan's Self-Defense, but the guys did not want to take him. It's his age, you see. But he was their mascot. He did not stay on the Maidan overnight, but he would always spend there from 5 to 8 hours. He said he had taken the oath, so he always has to stay with the people,” says his nephew Yevgeny Cheban about the hero of the Celestial Hundred Ivan Nakonechny.
Ivan Nakonechny was born in 1931. It was a horrible time for Ukraine. Ivan survived the famine that took the life of his sister, the war and the occupation. Fortunately, of the four children who were still alive in the family during the war, no one was hurt. Later Ivan Maksimovich recalled that the Germans treated children surprisingly well.
